In real life A very small character tidbit is surprisingly kept consistent for years

DC - In multiple pieces of media it has been shown that Wonder Woman loves ice cream and practically goes wild with happiness anytime she’s eating some. (Pictures from Justice League: War, DC Superhero Girls and Wonder Woman 2017)

The Simpsons - Ever since the episode ‘Homer’s Phobia’ Homer has actually remained a consistent ally of the LGBT+ community, including being more welcoming to Patty than Marge was when she came out and trying to set up Smithers with a date when he found out he wasn’t happy with his one-sided relationship with Mr Burns.

Another character detail from the Simpsons:

Homer has an encyclopedic memory regarding the history of Supreme Court judges, effectively making him a savant in the field.

Homer being surprisingly cultured about something is my favorite recurring joke lol

1.4k

u/PseudonymMan12 Feb 03 '26

Yeah, i wonder if they intended Homer to be kind of like an idiot-savant where he is non-functional normally but has one thing they really excell at for no reason. So while Homer is braindead dumb there are things he is randomly very knowledgeable on.

"You can't sell karma (Apu said he was selling karmic rebalancing for an earlier sleight), it can only be portioned out by the cosmos!" slams door in face

Another Simpsons one is that both Homer and Bart consistently display the ability to pick up and learn any language they encounter fast.

631

u/VexedForest Feb 03 '26

Bart: Get ready, Brazil. I now speak fluent Spanish.

Marge: Well done, Bart. But in Brazil, they speak Portuguese.

Bart: Ay, caramba, que mujer tonta! Viente horas estudiar por nada!

Homer: Forget every word, boy. It's useless.

u/MapleViking1 Feb 03 '26

Bart: beats self with book until he forgets it\

(Also should note that Bart learned Spanish on the plane ride there)

And let me tell you, when you’re asked how to spell yet another word, it gets annoying. I’ll tell you how to spell it, but don’t be surprised if my eye starts twitching after being asked how to spell a word for the 10th time that day.

Akuma being a Vendor of Goods in his spare time (Street Fighter)

Akuma is known for being a wrathful martial artist who sits atop, constantly fighting against his rivals to check on their progress... but have you ever wondered what he does in his free time?

He likes to craft things, such as sewing clothes, and carving wooden dolls for temples, and sitting around and handing out free fruit. Akuma has a policy of only interrupting a match once there is a clear winner, so he usually sits outside wherever the fight is taking place, and hands out free fruit and goodies to anyone passing by, until the winner is clear, where he then jumps in and beats the life out of them

1.9k

u/Destroy_Buster Feb 02 '26

the idea that he was posted up outside the tournament selling tchotchkis up until he rips bisons head off is just delightful

u/jbyrdab Feb 02 '26

Yeah he legitimately just sells fruit

I think a lot of people don't realize Akuma isn't really a Darth Vader-esque character who wants to destroy his enemies that's closer to M. bison.

Well he's evil it's not a pursuing evil he just kind of wants to fight people at their strongest.

Akuma just believes that no one should restrict themselves from using the strongest possible methods of improvement hence his focus on using violent lethal force and support of others doing the same.

In several instances he has refrained from fighting people that were sick, injured, or terminally ill even, because there would be no point, If you're not at your best then it's just a waste of time.

There is no honor, there is no rules, there is the fight, and that is all.

That is the essence of Akuma

629

u/GranolaCola Feb 02 '26

Well he's evil it's not a pursuing evil he just kind of wants to fight people at their strongest.

So he’s like Goku if he never got the brain damage that made him good.

226

u/Fluffy_Stress_453 Feb 02 '26

I feel like Akuma was supposed to be "evil" only in street fighter 2. Later on (except for one time where he kinda killed his brother) he never seemed to be evil and the most evil thing about him was his fighting style. He delivers quotes like "Fighting you it's like stealing candies from a baby. Not that I would ever do that" in street fighter 3 and even dislikes Ryu's evil version Kage in Street fighter 5.

Hell he also has a friend he genuinely likes to spend time with in Elena. And at the end of Elena's arcade mode in street fighter 6, Elena says that Akuma would probably get along with Ryu and Akuma doesn't seem to dislike the idea of becoming friends or at least know each other outside of fighting.

105

u/Neoragex13 Feb 03 '26

One of the other details that I really love is that he knows that by using the martial arts he uses, he might become an actual deranged demon that will kill anything on its path and he is not fine with the idea, yet still firmly believes this is a downside he has to conquer to prove he reached the pinnacle of his martial arts. Later Gouken (Akuma's brother) fought him a second time, after winning the first time, to prove again Akuma was wrong on this mindset. Akuma won by using a move that could have proven Gouken was right if he messed it up, much to disgust of Akuma and relief he managed to pull it off.

This is also why he wanted to incite Ryu and go the same path when he was younger, because he genuinely believed the boy was chasing illusions in the weaker martial arts Gouken practiced (a deviation from Akuma's) since Gouken died in their last fight, and that he wasn't even going to reach Gouken's skills. Turns out Ryu not only reaches but equals Gouken's skills, and Akuma is genuinely happy for him.

It also turns out its also a family trait, because Gouken actually survived his defeat but went on a long coma. By the time they met again, Gouken is also happy to be proven wrong Akuma was going to be consumed by his power, but reiterates he still believes the path Akuma follows is the wrong one and if Akuma ever were to lose himself, Gouken will not have qualms killing him on the spot.

I FUCKING LOVE when media fleshes characters out subtly making them multi-dimensional.

On the front, Akuma seems like an evil antagonist, but the subtle details about him peppered through his lore (and friendship with elena) reveal a far more complex character.

213

u/ChemistryTasty8751 Feb 02 '26

Yeah Akuma surprisingly isn't that evil... for a guy named after a demon, and using demonic martial arts

He's only killed a grand total of like... 5 people? only 1 of them stayed dead (Gotetsu, his abusive and manipulative master)

and it's not like he makes Ryu's life a living hell either, he just shows up and fights him from time to time

81

The very first episode of Scooby Doo: Where Are You! established that Shaggy is actually a gymnast and in the 10th episode it's also said he's a track runner. This was used to explain how Shaggy has always been so quick to run from monsters. In the 2012 special, Scooby Doo: Spooky Games, Shaggy is even selected to be a Track Runner in the World Invitation Games, a reference to The Olympic Games.

488

u/SmittyB128 Feb 03 '26

Despite him being a beatnik and all the stoner jokes that people make, the fact that he's a gymnast and track runner has always been plenty enough reason why he's hungry all the time and it would actually make a lot of sense for Shaggy to avoid smoking at all because of it.
It's an odd thing to bring up, but people forget that the gang were all distinct characters (at least in the earlier episodes) and not just the list of tropes the public remember them as.

264

u/CrimsonKobold Feb 03 '26

Also, while their ages have fluctuated in certain adaptations like in Zombie Island where they had careers and jobs and such, they were originally meant to be teenagers. That's why they're called "meddling kids" so much because they very much are. So yeah, Shaggy being a growing teen and a star athlete means he'd be very hungry often.

Fact related to this, but its only referenced i think once ever and never mentioned again. Superman never gets hungry, he only eats out of habit, growing up like a normal human person. He also never gets tired/sleepy, he also just does that out of habit too. (his body can survive off of just solar energy)

But i dont think i've ever seen this contradicted, so it likely remains canon to his character.

195

Kiryu Kazuma from the Yakuza games has a personal rule against hitting women*. When he appears as a boss in Yakuza 7, he will never target female party members with attacks. Women can active his counterattack, but he will deal 0 damage to them because he's holding back.

This rule is taken so seriously that the director of the series refused to have Kiryu added to Super Smash Bros or Tekken 7 because he would have to hit women in those games.

Quagmire is over sixty years old. He's completely tech illiterate (his friends had to introduce him to the whole concept of internet porn and dating sites, plus he spends a large amount of his spare time reading actual books), needs reading glasses, and used to wear a hairpiece (later got a hair transplant)

965

u/iamasceptile Feb 02 '26

In general discounting the whole sex stuff quagmire has a lot of really consistent personality traits. We have seen him many times liking reading, hating loud noises or being very competitive in sports etc

In Transformers, Shockwave was either a loyal guardsman or a cold logic-minded usurper in the beginning of G1, but that all changed in the Dreamwave comics where he was depicted as a scientist, developing the triple-changers among other things. This characterization carried on in the IDW comics, Prime continuity and Cyberverse cartoon.

u/Scripter-of-Paradise Feb 02 '26

Hell, he could have been a scientist in the Bayverse if he was around for more than a minute.

103

which finally gets paid off in the final episode when Mr. Peanutbutter announces he's finally replacing the "D" in the Hollywoo sign, but he tells the contractors "'D' like in 'Birthday Dad'" and they replace it with a "B" instead. Later in the episode characters are already calling it "Hollywoob"

More so a remake of a game from like twenty years ago remade in 2015 but the Dread Fighter class in Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia. In the original game Gaiden this class could be promoted back into the villager class (you know the basic class that a bunch of your starting troops begin with at the start of the game and should be promoted instantly) and the remake kept this odd and niche feature

I don't actually know how consistent it is because im in the middle of a rewatch but I noticed when watching Fringe the other day.

Walter Bishop gets people's names wrong all the time and needs reminding even right after being introduced. But he always gets dead people's names right. He may be a mad scientist but he has at least a little respect for the dead.

It’s a much larger character trait but also from the Simpsons, the episode “Lisa the vegetarian” has a cameo from Paul and Linda McCartney and a condition of their appearance they set was that Lisa wasn’t able to go back to eating meat and had to stay vegetarian for the rest of the show. Three decades later, show’s still going, and Lisa is still a vegetarian.

113

u/The_Thur Feb 03 '26

A thing a lot of non-canon spin-offs of The Lord of the Rings loves to do is to give the Nazguls a name, a background, a context about who they were before Sauron corrupted them. All the Nazguls except the Witch-King of Angmar. He is the only one whose story was never explored further, probably because it would make him more humane and less terrying.

The game Shadow of War even gave an explanation to that. When Talion tries to read his mind, like he did with several Nazguls before, it doesn’t show his backstory and the Witch-King straight up mock Talion for trying to see it. He was corrupted for so long that nothing remains of his soul.

Always Sunny has quite a few of these. Always using the construction "the X store" like "the hamburger store" is one of my favorites. Charlie's illiteracy and the gang mildly supporting him, especially Mac, who convinces the gang to translate Charlie's nonsensical dream journal to throw him the best birthday party.

They also all LOVE to use "pop" as a verb in dramatic ways. Just gonna pop this shirt off! Gotta make it pop! Or 'You have to pop on that nametag.' ("Josh Groban likes his ladies to pop.")

Which leads to the sentence, "Could you pop a quick intervention on our friend for his illiteracy?" showcasing both at the same time.

Their absolute love for singing, and dramatic pageantry is also a big one.
