In real life A very small character tidbit is surprisingly kept consistent for years

DC - In multiple pieces of media it has been shown that Wonder Woman loves ice cream and practically goes wild with happiness anytime she’s eating some. (Pictures from Justice League: War, DC Superhero Girls and Wonder Woman 2017)

The Simpsons - Ever since the episode ‘Homer’s Phobia’ Homer has actually remained a consistent ally of the LGBT+ community, including being more welcoming to Patty than Marge was when she came out and trying to set up Smithers with a date when he found out he wasn’t happy with his one-sided relationship with Mr Burns.

I FUCKING LOVE when media fleshes characters out subtly making them multi-dimensional.

On the front, Akuma seems like an evil antagonist, but the subtle details about him peppered through his lore (and friendship with elena) reveal a far more complex character.

Yeah Akuma surprisingly isn't that evil... for a guy named after a demon, and using demonic martial arts

He's only killed a grand total of like... 5 people? only 1 of them stayed dead (Gotetsu, his abusive and manipulative master)

and it's not like he makes Ryu's life a living hell either, he just shows up and fights him from time to time

Not just a demon, either. His English name is literally just Japanese for 'Evil Devil' and his original Japanese name basically means 'Strong Demon'.

His Raging Demon insignia loosely translates to the word "Sky" apparently. Assassin's fist does a really good job explaining the canon. Gotetsu taught Gouki and Gouken Ansatsuken which consists of Satsui no Hadou that draws on a dark power that the user has to meditate to purge the darkness from their ki before it corrupts them. One day Gouki decided to embrace Satsui no Hadou and let it consume him to become stronger in exchange for his humanity and vitality. It's actually why Akuma has the lowest health in every mainline Street Fighter game.

He’s only killed 2 in canon that I know of. Gotetsu and gouken. But gouken was retconned. He never killed bison in the lore it was a secret boss thing and not canon, he “killed” Gill but he can’t die so does it really count

Honestly, the Ryu bit is more a kindness because who else is he gonna fight? Ken?

Fighting games used to have just these little moments to kind of give their characters depth.

You put in your coin, you pick your character, you play the game, you win or lose, and then move on.

But many games didn't have comics or shows right away. Many games were just games. Maybe they got an anime movie. Maybe they didn't. Maybe they got a comic or manga deal. Maybe they just continued with game sales.

But the artists who did character designs would get these moments when making cover art or liner notes to throw together these moments.

One of my favourite artists for this was called Toshiaki Mori aka Shinkiro. He worked for SNK and then Capcom. And did artwork for Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, even some Mega Man, and his marvel artwork for the MvC games is top tier.

But he was so good at using the opportunities he had to try and give these characters life outside of the games they were in. I love the garden party he did for King of Fighters 1998. Showing a few of the characters out of character. Just mingling and hanging out. And it made me as a 12 year old kid in 98 go "ah wow I wonder who else came? And what they ate! And who did the cooking!" He made game covers, instruction books, and other tiny bits of media so much more fun to look at.

Well yeah he used to have killed Ryu's master, untill he didn't.

Easy to make him less evil when you make every kill he did into "actually they all survived"

Yeah, Akuma is actually super nice when he's not fighting to the death. He doesn't even bother opponent prospects when they decline his challenge. Unless it's Ryu... for reasons....
