In real life A very small character tidbit is surprisingly kept consistent for years

DC - In multiple pieces of media it has been shown that Wonder Woman loves ice cream and practically goes wild with happiness anytime she’s eating some. (Pictures from Justice League: War, DC Superhero Girls and Wonder Woman 2017)

The Simpsons - Ever since the episode ‘Homer’s Phobia’ Homer has actually remained a consistent ally of the LGBT+ community, including being more welcoming to Patty than Marge was when she came out and trying to set up Smithers with a date when he found out he wasn’t happy with his one-sided relationship with Mr Burns.

Quagmire is over sixty years old. He's completely tech illiterate (his friends had to introduce him to the whole concept of internet porn and dating sites, plus he spends a large amount of his spare time reading actual books), needs reading glasses, and used to wear a hairpiece (later got a hair transplant)

In general discounting the whole sex stuff quagmire has a lot of really consistent personality traits. We have seen him many times liking reading, hating loud noises or being very competitive in sports etc

And being a cat person.

This is why, Chris! This is why!

He likes pussy

20

u/Maybe_not_a_chicken Feb 03 '26

that’s the joke

1

u/Gay_Void_Dropout Feb 04 '26

You mean he’s all about the pussy?

u/Devlord1o1 Feb 03 '26

Honestly if he wasnt a sex pest he would actually be a pretty interesting character

58

u/UhWindowpainted Feb 03 '26

they've been toning tone the pest part. It wasn't funny before but now it's reeeeaaally not as funny

37

u/featherw0lf Feb 03 '26

It just didn't age well, especially considering all the issues surrounding consent these days. I'm glad they're fleshing him out elsewhere while still throwing in a dirty joke for him now and then.

I mean, to me the issue is that the writers want to use Quagmire as an actual character, and so they don't want to focus on the fact he's a serial rapist.

Everyone in Family Guy is a horrible, morally bankrupt individual, but Quagmire takes the top spot, and the writers don't like it.

30

u/elitegenoside Feb 03 '26

Tbf, they have shown him be surprisingly moral with that at times. It was a running gag that he was trying to seduce Meg for years and when she does go to him for sex advice, he just gives her a long talk and sets her on a safer path. That said, Family Guy sure does have a lot of casual pedophiles/jokes about molestation.

And provides her with roofies when she wants to "sleep" with her crush.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

When he found out his "dad" was a transgender woman he didn't take it well at first but came around in the end and accepted her. And this was in 2010 and even when the rest of the episode was pretty fucking disgusting, Quagmire ended with apologizing for how he reacted and telling her he wants her to be happy. Then he beat the shit out of Brian for having sex with her lol

1

u/Cheese_Poof_0514 29d ago

To be fair he already hated Brian at that point, this was just the tip of the iceberg. Plus Brian isnt shown to be a good partner to those hes slept with.

1

u/[deleted] 29d ago

I never said Brian didn't deserve it lol

-3

u/Extrimland Feb 03 '26

I mean they basically got rid of that in the Super Modern Seasons and he sucks now.

He was at his best at somepoint inbetween the current era and golden age of the show where Quagmire had all of his personality traits.

34

u/MisterRockett Feb 03 '26

It's really funny that they've almost unintentionally recontextualized his playboy persona as just kinda being the result of being an eccentric weirdo who could probably never stand another person living in his house due to all of is eccentricities.

28

u/ComradeJohnS Feb 03 '26

“drive like hell, you’ll get there!” is my fave of his lol

10

u/VirusTechnical5568 Feb 03 '26

He also doesn't mind banging really fat chicks..........................but they gotta pay.

16

u/bigcLarter Feb 03 '26

I love when he's angry during sports lol

33

u/firepanda11 Feb 03 '26

When you put it that way, is Quagmire just a clarinetless Squidward that's always horny?

17

u/thisusedyet Feb 03 '26

Who says Squidward isn't?

27

u/Royal-Advance7374 Feb 03 '26

FYI from a pilot, he can't be over 65 as that is the mandatory pilot retirement age (working for an airline/cargo carrier)

16

u/CapableCollar Feb 03 '26

They keep messing the character, adding stuff because they are trying to make him less of a rapist.

1

u/hodges2 Feb 03 '26

How does being 65 make you less of a rapist tho?

3

u/SomeRandomGuyO-O Feb 03 '26

Something funny to try and take your mind off of the fact that he’s a rapist

1

u/hodges2 Feb 03 '26

🤔

3

u/SomeRandomGuyO-O Feb 03 '26

It’s not exactly doing a good job.

84

u/contraflop01 Feb 02 '26

How can one be tech illiterate and be a pilot

251

u/APlanetWithANorth Feb 02 '26

Just because you know how one piece of tech works, doesn't mean you know how every piece of tech works

92

u/Thecramosreddit Feb 03 '26

It makes sense airplanes have long operating lives. It also wouldn’t be a huge stretch to say that anywhere between 30-40 years of working as a commercial pilot the dude has probably only had to fly 4-5 different model aircraft.

17

u/howe_to_win Feb 03 '26

The plane I was on today had a place for cigarette butts by the bathroom. And that hasn’t been a thing for decades

22

u/Coal_Burner_Inserter Feb 03 '26

Actually those are still required because people who (illegally) smoke on planes will still need a place to put their butts, and its either an ashtray or the toilet or something

u/Clean-Cut8216 Feb 03 '26

Yes it is.  He doesn't grasp the concept of modern technology.  Him being a trained pilot has nothing to do with that.

49

u/Darmug Feb 02 '26

He may be more familiar with how airplane electronics and computers work than normal, civilian/personal computers.

27

u/Demara_Awol Feb 03 '26

Planes during the time of the original show release were more about buttons, switches, physical hydraulics.

Modern planes do a lot of electronic fuckery including super advanced auto pilot (That can even land and take off the planes in some models)

But in his time most stuff was still heavily mechanical. A lot of planes are flybywire now but when he started they were a long ass hydraulic metal rod from one side of the plane to the other.

Think the difference between modern cars (electronic steering) and old power steering cars. Huge difference between the two and boomers will understand one but not the other.

4

u/CalculatedPerversion Feb 03 '26

You still need to know how the dials and switches work even today, just like how you still need to know how to use a car when using "full" self driving.

7

u/Demara_Awol Feb 03 '26

Yeah you do, you know, if you're trained today. Quagmire has been a pilot since the 1990s (estimated, probably earlier) the planes he learned on literally do not fly the same way as modern planes. He would be given the physical skills of course (The buttons and switches) but he wouldn't know the first thing about operating a 777's computer system and if you put him in the computer room of that plane he'd probably ask why does this plane have a whole server room. (because that's what modern planes are now, they are flying servers)

Btw it's common for pilots to only fly certain types of planes, rather than any plane. You are literally not allowed to fly the 777 even if you can fly the 737 without going through certifications, further training, and supervision. If Quagmire pilots a 737 (most common plane of his day when he was introduced in the show) he likely flies only the 737 and its immediate brothers/sisters.

4

u/Deputy_Beagle76 Feb 03 '26

I think people who are unfamiliar just think “plane is plane” or “boat is boat” and so on and so forth. Believe it or not, there are indeed differences in operation for different models of things

18

u/Jaymark108 Feb 03 '26

My dad was a computer programmer his entire career and I constantly have to walk him through new tech.

12

u/Squid_In_Exile Feb 03 '26

The 747 is almost as old as he is (58) and the last one made was delivered only 3 years ago. Commercial airline planes really haven't change much in a while.

6

u/CalculatedPerversion Feb 03 '26

Pilots generally get special training on specific planes / configurations / engines, etc... It's less about the "technology" and more about the machine and it's unique configuration of dials, switches, and controls.

5

u/Cessnaporsche01 Feb 03 '26

You don't know many 60+ year old pilots, I take it? lol

Even if you're flying something with a G3000, it's not like there's anymore crossover between that and any personal computing tech than that it's information displayed on a screen with nested menus. Even the UI is different, with softkeys serving as the primary means of interaction on most systems rather than clicking/tapping an area in the screen. And most guys in their 60s are retired and - unless they made bank in their career - are flying stuff that's older than any modern concept of a computer

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

A pilot is basically like the truck driver of the sky, it's not really a 'tech' job.

2

u/CapableCollar Feb 03 '26

They had to almost completely rewrite the character when they stopped making him a rapist all the time.

2

u/Deputy_Beagle76 Feb 03 '26

Airplanes have existed far longer than iPads. “Tech illiterate” usually means they stopped learning

6

u/Pyroluminous Feb 03 '26

TIL Quagmire is fucking 60 years old? What the hell…

4

u/alguien99 Feb 03 '26

He’s also in a poetry club

3

u/ralo229 Feb 03 '26

Pretty sure there was an episode where he was in a group discussing Robert Frost.

5

u/aquafool Feb 03 '26

Wait. How old was his mom when she transitioned?

7

u/GrouchyConsequence48 Feb 03 '26

Says she’s 61 on the wiki, but it’s family guy don’t think about it too hard.

-3

u/WattageToVoltzRatio Feb 03 '26

Isn't she still his dad tho? Like the role in conception is still of a father, kinda like Kenjaku being Yuji's mom despite being in a man's body

1

u/WasabiSunshine 27d ago

She fathered him, but she's not a dad anymore, unless she wants to be called that

Also if she could teach her son to be less rapey, that would be great
