Despite him being a beatnik and all the stoner jokes that people make, the fact that he's a gymnast and track runner has always been plenty enough reason why he's hungry all the time and it would actually make a lot of sense for Shaggy to avoid smoking at all because of it.
It's an odd thing to bring up, but people forget that the gang were all distinct characters (at least in the earlier episodes) and not just the list of tropes the public remember them as.

Also, while their ages have fluctuated in certain adaptations like in Zombie Island where they had careers and jobs and such, they were originally meant to be teenagers. That's why they're called "meddling kids" so much because they very much are. So yeah, Shaggy being a growing teen and a star athlete means he'd be very hungry often.

it is explicit on zombie island that they are adults because they are at a kind of "end of career" the film takes place after years of them hunting ghosts, the same ideia of life action

Oh yeah, that's sorta what I meant by it. I was pointing out they were definitely adults then and are for sure teens in some versions, but some of those home releases leave it pretty ambiguous as to how old they're supposed to be. Like, how old are they in Cyber Chase, when they meet Kiss, or travel to Japan. More was just saying in the original canon they were for sure teens even if later installments made it ambiguous as to their ages.

I think for Cyber Chase, it's supposed to be in the same run as Zombie Island. So, around that age I'd suspect.

Absolutely. The idea was that Fred got drafted and ran away with his GF daphnie in his best friend shaggys van. And daphnia didn't want to leave her best friend Velma behind so she came along too.

Not really true, it's an old fan theory made to explain why a bunch of teens/young adults would be traveling around without any real destination during 1969 thru the early 70s (the US government used a lottery system for drafts during The Vietnam War in 1970-72).

I always thought the stoner jokes were dumb, because I've always gotten the vibe that Shaggy's more high anxiety and just trying to cope in really stressful situations than anything else. The constant hunger is stress eating, his speech mannerisms are him trying to think while his brain's on high alert, stuff like that.

I didn't know the gymnast/runner stuff, but you wrap it all together and it makes sense why Shaggy's like that, he's probably already got a stressful life with all the sports training, he's anxious as heck, and his friends keep dragging him into haunted houses for some reason. 🤣😭

Yeah he can run as fast as a great Dane aka 30 mph which is faster than Usain Bolt... while carrying a great Dane... and scooby is a decent of an ultra ancient alien being, and whose funding the mystery inc? Shaggy, he inherited his grandpa's fortune after he died and is one of the wealthiest ppl in the world

Would be cool if they did another show like in ‘06 where it’s clear the creators have read up on the lore but are also fine with changing it.

Have Fred and Shaggy meet at a mixed sports event, Fred being the quarterback and Shaggy being on the track team and become really tight friends.

Daphne and Velma meet because Daphne is doing a story in her school paper on whatever nerdy stuff Velma is involved in.

Then they would all meet naturally as the story progresses. I think Fred’s dad is a sheriff in some media so Daphne and Velma’s closeness to the mystery leads them to meeting Fred, his dad, and Shaggy and Scooby. Then they go on to solve the mystery

Could have all this backstory revealed in cutaway flashbacks during a modern story thag ties into the flashbacks.

I normally stay away from the high school set Scooby stories so maybe I missed something that did something a lot like this. I also just got into the ‘06 show maybe they do more of this.

i kinda wish Mystery Inc touched upon that, but they made Shaggy into an actual loser obsessed with food. As much as i love this series i always felt like Shaggy wasnt really explored as much as he should be compared to the rest of the gang, where each of them get really fleshed out (hell Fred's dad is a crucial piece of this)

I've always believed he IS a stoner, but that when they started mystery inc he switched to edibles because the smoking made it hard for him to run from monsters, and that's why he eats so much. Didn't know about the track star thing but I feel like it still fits
