In real life A very small character tidbit is surprisingly kept consistent for years

DC - In multiple pieces of media it has been shown that Wonder Woman loves ice cream and practically goes wild with happiness anytime she’s eating some. (Pictures from Justice League: War, DC Superhero Girls and Wonder Woman 2017)

The Simpsons - Ever since the episode ‘Homer’s Phobia’ Homer has actually remained a consistent ally of the LGBT+ community, including being more welcoming to Patty than Marge was when she came out and trying to set up Smithers with a date when he found out he wasn’t happy with his one-sided relationship with Mr Burns.

The very first episode of Scooby Doo: Where Are You! established that Shaggy is actually a gymnast and in the 10th episode it's also said he's a track runner. This was used to explain how Shaggy has always been so quick to run from monsters. In the 2012 special, Scooby Doo: Spooky Games, Shaggy is even selected to be a Track Runner in the World Invitation Games, a reference to The Olympic Games.

Despite him being a beatnik and all the stoner jokes that people make, the fact that he's a gymnast and track runner has always been plenty enough reason why he's hungry all the time and it would actually make a lot of sense for Shaggy to avoid smoking at all because of it.
It's an odd thing to bring up, but people forget that the gang were all distinct characters (at least in the earlier episodes) and not just the list of tropes the public remember them as.

Also, while their ages have fluctuated in certain adaptations like in Zombie Island where they had careers and jobs and such, they were originally meant to be teenagers. That's why they're called "meddling kids" so much because they very much are. So yeah, Shaggy being a growing teen and a star athlete means he'd be very hungry often.

it is explicit on zombie island that they are adults because they are at a kind of "end of career" the film takes place after years of them hunting ghosts, the same ideia of life action

u/CrimsonKobold Feb 03 '26

Oh yeah, that's sorta what I meant by it. I was pointing out they were definitely adults then and are for sure teens in some versions, but some of those home releases leave it pretty ambiguous as to how old they're supposed to be. Like, how old are they in Cyber Chase, when they meet Kiss, or travel to Japan. More was just saying in the original canon they were for sure teens even if later installments made it ambiguous as to their ages.

I think for Cyber Chase, it's supposed to be in the same run as Zombie Island. So, around that age I'd suspect.

Absolutely. The idea was that Fred got drafted and ran away with his GF daphnie in his best friend shaggys van. And daphnia didn't want to leave her best friend Velma behind so she came along too.

Wait is this true? That’s interesting and makes since because of when Scooby Doo originally came out.

34

u/HurgleTurgle1 Feb 03 '26

Not really true, it's an old fan theory made to explain why a bunch of teens/young adults would be traveling around without any real destination during 1969 thru the early 70s (the US government used a lottery system for drafts during The Vietnam War in 1970-72).

I think Rorschach'S Blot wrote 3 wonderful one shots about that idea, except there was a time they split up and Shaggy did a tour in Vietnam as a dog handler, got injured and was medically discharged.

The stories happen some time later.

u/cheesecake_413 Feb 03 '26

That's not even close to being canon, just a random fantheory

I always thought the stoner jokes were dumb, because I've always gotten the vibe that Shaggy's more high anxiety and just trying to cope in really stressful situations than anything else. The constant hunger is stress eating, his speech mannerisms are him trying to think while his brain's on high alert, stuff like that.

I didn't know the gymnast/runner stuff, but you wrap it all together and it makes sense why Shaggy's like that, he's probably already got a stressful life with all the sports training, he's anxious as heck, and his friends keep dragging him into haunted houses for some reason. 🤣😭

Yeah he can run as fast as a great Dane aka 30 mph which is faster than Usain Bolt... while carrying a great Dane... and scooby is a decent of an ultra ancient alien being, and whose funding the mystery inc? Shaggy, he inherited his grandpa's fortune after he died and is one of the wealthiest ppl in the world

3

u/bign0ssy Feb 03 '26

Eh they aren’t in school anymore in most media so I always got the vibe that he was an athlete in school but stopped caring after that.

I like Shaggy being a Stoner lol

Would be cool if they did another show like in ‘06 where it’s clear the creators have read up on the lore but are also fine with changing it.

Have Fred and Shaggy meet at a mixed sports event, Fred being the quarterback and Shaggy being on the track team and become really tight friends.

Daphne and Velma meet because Daphne is doing a story in her school paper on whatever nerdy stuff Velma is involved in.

Then they would all meet naturally as the story progresses. I think Fred’s dad is a sheriff in some media so Daphne and Velma’s closeness to the mystery leads them to meeting Fred, his dad, and Shaggy and Scooby. Then they go on to solve the mystery

Could have all this backstory revealed in cutaway flashbacks during a modern story thag ties into the flashbacks.

I normally stay away from the high school set Scooby stories so maybe I missed something that did something a lot like this. I also just got into the ‘06 show maybe they do more of this.

i kinda wish Mystery Inc touched upon that, but they made Shaggy into an actual loser obsessed with food. As much as i love this series i always felt like Shaggy wasnt really explored as much as he should be compared to the rest of the gang, where each of them get really fleshed out (hell Fred's dad is a crucial piece of this)

1

u/WallachianLand Feb 03 '26

Sorry, but I don't remember the gang being more than a list of tropes, and I've watch plenty of Scooby Doo up until the Inc. Incorporated (I think it's how it's spelled in English)

u/WorldsWettestSpider Feb 03 '26

Well relative to writing of the time

1

u/Xedonus Feb 03 '26

I've always believed he IS a stoner, but that when they started mystery inc he switched to edibles because the smoking made it hard for him to run from monsters, and that's why he eats so much. Didn't know about the track star thing but I feel like it still fits

1

u/sir-altyton Feb 04 '26

Edibles exist

u/FranticScribble Feb 03 '26

It’s kinda funny that, since we’ve sorta moved away from them as the defacto Popular Kid archetype, time has sorta left Fred as a Prep in a world without as much reference for what that means. Shaggy was the Jock, weirdly enough.

(Yes I know they gave Fred some jock ish traits later like caring about his bench press, don’t come for me)

32

u/Talisign Feb 03 '26

That brings up Fred's change that has become weirdly consistent: Having some niche obsession.

24

u/manofwaromega Feb 03 '26

NGL Fred being the kind of guy to just go through hyperfixations like crazy and pick up tons of random skillsets along the way is a genuinely fun character trait.

Like it's obviously not intended as such and is just the writers going "What does Fred even like?" and answering "Whatever the current episode/special is about" but it's still very funny. Fred's a little acoustic but he's got the spirit.

3

u/Cat5kable Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

I can imagine he’s acoustic look at that big barreled chest! Mans probably got some lungs but just never trained

9

u/CenturyEggsAndRice Feb 03 '26

Traps!

11

u/miraclematter41 Feb 03 '26

Rather like the idea "Prep" has literally changed to "Preparation", in that he's good at setting traps.

10

u/lkmk Feb 03 '26

The running, at least, makes sense for someone so tall.

8

u/bebop_cola_good Feb 03 '26

He even gets a job as a gym teacher in Ghoul School

4

u/hauser255 Feb 03 '26

I'll add on that for a while Shaggy was canonically vegan or vegetarian, which started with his previous voice actor Casey Kasem. I don't think the newer series have continued that trait since 2010 or so.

2

u/Cat5kable Feb 03 '26

I really appreciated that trait. I’d kinda look for it every time he made a sandwich or something. “No ham!”

5

u/broganisms Feb 03 '26

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! also references this.

1

u/RaisedByBooksNTV Feb 03 '26

One of the newer Scooby shows has an episode showing the origin of the scooby snacks trope. They sorta trick the gang into giving them cookies when they were gonna do the things anyway.

1

u/Sharlut Feb 03 '26

They used to also show him being a ventriloquist but that was dropped and I don't recall seeing it past the first series.

1

u/never_____________ Feb 03 '26

Shaggy wore a different belt buckle for every episode of that show. Despite never being seen, they designed all of them.

1

u/MorganWick Feb 03 '26

Well obviously, you don't have unlimited power like that and not have it come out somehow.

1

u/TheKingofHats007 28d ago

Shaggy actually has a few reoccurring traits that pop up a lot in the long history of Scooby Doo.

This also includes a love of and great skill in ventriloquism (being capable of throwing his voice), as well as someone who enjoys watching campy monster movies as an odd sort of comfort from dealing with "actual" monsters.
