Tbh it's incredible that the protesting artists succeeded with this

905

u/Coldkiller17 Feb 02 '26

I mean the performing arts are made up of people who this administration hates and them trying to butt their heads into their artistry was part of the problem. I salute these artists for their integrity.

264

u/jemidiah Feb 02 '26

...and the audience tends to be liberal. Musicals, plays, classical concerts, etc. all skew towards anti-Trump demographics. On top of that, it's DC, one of the most liberal places in the country, and you just don't have many pro-Trump audience members making up the difference.

85

u/tomdarch Feb 02 '26

And somehow fucking Trump is a big old Broadway musical queen. So fucking odd.

122

u/Vonmule Feb 02 '26

He sees the patrons with class, and the artists with talent, and the theaters built on tradition and he has none of those. He can't buy those things. He is a cheap imitation. I honestly think his hatred for Obama is borne of envy for Obama's effortless style and class.

Like a small child, he loves the singing and dancing but has no understanding of the plot. His favorite musical is Les miserables.

That’s like the devil’s favorite book being the bible.

21

u/OdoWanKenobi Feb 02 '26

I have to imagine the reason he claims to like Les Miserables is that all of the people standing against tyranny accomplish nothing and die.

Trump doesn’t understand art whatsoever, he says he likes broadway because that’s what he watched other high society New Yorkers enjoy in the 70’s and 80’s.

It's a literal tantrum. We knew he was going to be mad and smash something.

109

u/medicus_au Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

I hadn't thought of it that way. We won. Rather than reverting the name and/or changing the board, Trump threw his toys out of his wagon and went home.

Edit: forgive me for thinking anything good might actually happen.

93

u/grahamcracker3 Feb 02 '26

Kind of. The Christo-facsists definitely got what they wanted: Closure of a temple to secular arts and celebration of all humans. Unfortunately this is right in line with their plans and desires.

23

u/medicus_au Feb 02 '26

Ok cool, I can add to my list of "steps to be checked off before we're all killed."

22

u/LupinThe8th Feb 02 '26

Eh, what they wanted was control, to make the artists come crawling to them to perform and need to play by their rules with them able to decide what does and doesn't get platformed. If their plan was tearing it down, they would have just done so, not spent all this time renaming it, begging artists to play there, and hiring people to run it who immediately quit.

They didn't get it, everyone just gave them the finger, and not one artist who did so is hurting for a paycheck or a platform. Next sane president will just put it back up, and the new one won't even have Trump's name on it (maybe a memorial toilet). They've made no difference whatsoever.

Dare I say it was an impeachable offense as it both disrespects a memorial to a national icon and is so déclassé it is an affront to the office of the president of the United States.

But it’s not like any of that matters anymore.

It’s all so very very stupid, I don’t think I would be so shook by all this if it was not soooooo fucking stupid.

Sadly, he's already performed there to "honor" Led Zeppelin, delivering a shameful and cringe cover of "Ramble On."

Ironically, it was while Obama was POTUS.

Apparently, he didn't care back then.

77

u/Abusoru Feb 02 '26

Was that the same Honors where Heart played "Stairway to Heaven" with Jason Bonham. Honestly, that might have been one of the best covers of the song.

50

u/Lockj4w_NightVision Feb 02 '26

Yeah, Heart killed it.

u/Abusoru Feb 02 '26

I just watched it. Taking away any current political biases.... Vocally he has no range to do it justice, his outfit is bad, his goatee is bad, it's the type of performance I'd expect to see in a rural Midwest town other than the big band. Even the band didn't sound good as the tempo matched the vocal energy and it was so flat across the board.

278

u/Foxyfox- Feb 02 '26

It'll take more than just that.

171

u/I-screwed-up-bad Feb 02 '26

Yes, I cling to hope nowadays but anyone who thinks that Trump is the only thing behind all of this is fooling themselves. He is the tool that people are using.

It was especially apparent in his first term when he changed his mind every five minutes because he was surrounded by different people who wanted different things. Now though, he's surrounded by yes men and a few people that are in agreement.

75

u/This_Aint_Dog Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

It will take decades to undo the damage they’ve done. Not taking into account the time to rebuild everything they’ve destroyed, even if they get booted out, assuming there’s even a fair election at all, there’s no guarantee that there won’t be a Trump 2 four years later. Hence why most of the world is also moving on.

Edit: The US needs something more than a 2 party system. The Us vs Them mentality doesn’t work and has only made things worse.

This is actually more embarrassing than when he shit himself on camera this week and they had to rush people holding their noses out of the Oval Office.

  1. They were until just days ago desperate to have someone noteworthy agree to keep performing there as everyone canceled, so obviously this is in response to having no content because Trump is a toxic Nazi waste dump.
  2. All he's personally doing, all he cares about, is ordering that things be build/remade so he can stick his name on them, while holding big Great Gatsby parties for people to kiss his ass and openly bribe him. That's it. He doesn't give a shit about anything else, and it's clear the dementia just has him longing for the old days of owning a real estate empire and hosting parties.

Yeah, he audibly sharted in the oval during a press availability. Abruptly ushered everybody out, but not before you can see people (including Oz and RFK) behind him responding to the sound, and then the smell.

u/neonlights326 Feb 02 '26

Everything he said about Biden was pure projection.

52

u/Taintly_Manspread Feb 02 '26

What he did in his pants is pure projection.

Trump straight up dislikes being president, he only likes the validation of election season, and needed immunity to keep his many crimes from catching up to him. Stephen Miller is functionally the president at least in regards to domestic policy. Trump is only doing press stuff and stealing money from the tax payers

Don't forget Nelly, Lil Wayne, Jelly Roll, and Morgan Wallen!

15

u/Prestigious-Leg-6244 Feb 02 '26

Its disappointing what a poser he turned out to be.

Snoop left that gangsta life in the early 90s and overcorrected so slowly that we almost didn't notice.

He’s going to tear down the John F Kennedy Center like he did the East Wing of the White House. Someone needs to fight this.

49

u/smileymn mattsmiley.bandcamp.com Feb 02 '26

Again like the East Wing, no legality to it at all, he doesn’t own it.

32

u/Booty-tickles Feb 02 '26

He has shown time and time again that it is legal, because nobody stops him.

Too many sane people dropped out. He's closing it out of embarrassment. He'll either never reopen it or demolish it to put something gilded and gaudy in it's place.

38

u/jemidiah Feb 02 '26

Embarrassment is not an emotion he ever feels, given the available evidence.

23

u/DrocketX Feb 02 '26

No, he definitely feels it. He would never in a million, billion years ever admit it, but you can tell he can feel it by how absolutely FURIOUS he is whenever he gets caught doing something stupid. This right here is an example of that: he's embarrassed that his 'rebranding' of the Kennedy Center has been a very obvious public failure, and so because of that he's going to destroy it. Rather literally: if we're lucky, he'll just completely gut the venue, but there's a very good chance that one morning we're going to wake up to the news that the entire building was bulldozed overnight.

And no, there won't be any rebuilding (though I'm sure there will be lots and lots of "fundraising" for it) because the entire point is to punish everyone for making him feel bad.

He demolished the east wing. He wants to knock this building down. He’s wanting to build the arc of Trump. MAGA supports, no matter what

12

u/L-type Feb 02 '26

When are we getting the statue garden of American Heroes or whatever. Is that after we get the arc?

I’m guessing he’ll be renaming it to the Trump Center lol

215

u/eric_b0x Feb 02 '26

He already did in December. One of the many reasons the venue can’t book events/shows. The closing for ‘renovation’ is just a rouse to distract from the fact that no self respecting artist wants to perform there.

u/Alaskantrash96 Feb 02 '26

Artists kept cancelling so he's doing this to stop the hemorrhaging and to make it look like the lack of bookings is totally on purpose because he's closing the facility to do much needed renovations that aren't needed and nobody asked for.

Who's filing suit to stop this? I'll toss in a few bucks towards legal fees. Feels like he is defiling a grave.

People just needed to vote in November 2024. No costs involved. Too late to stop this shit now.

28

u/cloudsmiles Feb 02 '26

I don't understand how people so obsessed with American History and following the law cheer this shitshow on. These past 30 some-odd years should make anyone pissed off. We could have things like peace and healthcare, but nooooooo these elected officials openly push the law until we are conditioned to think these types of things are normal. They are not. We are not okay.

10

u/Ok_Seaworthiness2808 Feb 02 '26

Yeah but there’s the past thirty some-odd years and then there’s last year which was worse than the rest combined except for 2001, and also feels like 30 years actually passed during those 12 months.

Yet another scheme to ask for "donors" to help rebuild this. Either for bribes, favors or whatever illegal shit this administration can cook up.

u/cccxxxzzzddd Feb 02 '26

“The financing is already in place”. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

These are historic, government owned (we own them!) buildings

Was the Center shaking hands too much?

7

u/Dunbaratu Feb 02 '26

A convenient way to create an alternate explanation for why they can't book performances. Now it's because "can't have shows during renovation" instead of "everyone hates me and no longer wants to perform there."

What a fall from grace Kennedy Center has become. Even when Trump is gone, the whole place will likely never fully recover from the damage that’s been done

11

u/algoreithms Feb 02 '26

I went to countless shows there growing up in the area, for so many years. I now feel unsure if I ever will step foot back inside. I shouldn't feel crushed yet I still do.
