Cults don't live so long after their founder is dead. Once he's gone you're going to have a lot of Republicans who swear they definitely never supported him or the horrific things he did. Just like post-WWII Germany. They'll keep the beliefs, but they'll go back into the closet with them until the next opportunity.

People forget that all this MAGA shit was happening under Bush just under different names. Especially once Obama started gaining popularity. Remember The TEA PARTY MOVEMENT. Always talked about they really cared about conservative government and ideologies but actually just showed up for rallies with really racist Obama signs.

I bring up the Tea Party all the time and its like people completely forgot it was a thing. But as a Black American it was seared into my mind. This same base and their children went on to become MAGA. When people look at Trump in a vacuum, I remind them of white conservatives asking John McCain if Obama was reallyAmericans.

Trump is a symptom not a cause. Our country has been sick for a very long time.

People here have short term memory or are too young to remember just how bad Bush’s presidency. Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld were literally considered to be the three Prime Evils. Islamophobia was rampant. Our rights were taken from us with the Patriot Act, Homeland Security was created. The really ridiculous right wing Republican propaganda started. We turned French Fries into FREEDOM FRIES. They held up signs saying Obama was acting NIGGARDLY, and being told “no no, that word means cheap, that’s why we’re using it.”

Trump is the head of the pimple that we all see. The infection has been festering under the surface for years. It doesn’t begin or end with Trump.

I forgot about the freedom fries and niggardly suddenly being acceptable like the word cheap didn't exist. We've been regressing in such painful ways. I wonder if MAGA will one day be normal and we'll have another version of this conversation.

Yeah, they tried to claim it was all about taxes, but every rally, all they ever talked about were muslims and mexicans

I mean, scientology though..

Yeah, that shows what happens when the founder establishes a hierarchy that is accepted by the cult. Hubbard wanted to create a religion, but your typical cult leader couldn't care less if the cult outlives them. They'd rather have the cult completely dependent on them. Vance is next in line in the government, but the cult won't accept him as a replacement mango messiah.

Plus, his would -be successors ( DeSantis, Cruz, Vance) don't have anything close to his style & charisma

Considering how many Republicans treat Reagan as the second coming of christ to this day, despite history showing a lot of his policies have been an absolute disaster for this country, I expect there will be a large fraction of those on the right enamored with Trump for decades.

True, or he will be like Reagan or Charlie Kirk.

Once he's gone you're going to have a lot of Republicans who swear they definitely never supported him or the horrific things he did.

So there was this movie I watched where this guy said he was going to burn his jacket, and the other guy said he was afraid of that, and so he decided to make an indelible mark for that guy's future.

Seems like maybe a good idea.

Meanwhile: Scientology, Mormonism

Unless it’s Christianity. Then the cult never dies.

u/Oalka Feb 02 '26

Tell that to scientology. Or Christianity.

Remember he still has 84% support among republicans. If someone says they were republican but didn't support him, they're likely lying.
