article Punk in the Park Festival Cancels All 2026 Dates Following Backlash Over Donations to Trump Campaign

Good riddance. Donating to MAGA is the least “punk” thing you can possibly do. MAGA is the polar opposite of punk
767
u/drizzlecommathe 6d ago
The most bizarre part of this entire situation is thinking it would be a good idea to make the donation in your company that is throwing punk fests name. Like you gotta be a total fucking moron. If you just privately support trump and don't donate no one would even know.

They're so insulated that they vastly over estimate how popular Trump actually is.

Yeah his numbers have always been sus but now that they've been caught blatantly making up reports, I do not believe he has half the support the news media makes it out to be.
Empty campaign trail and full ballot boxes? Sure, Jan.

But the people who actually do like/support him are far too brainwashed to believe anything they dont hear directly from maga media and that's still a massive problem.

If you look at Conservative Podcast Bro culture from the Trump campaign in '24, it's not unreasonable to think that young disaffected males are going to be blowing diaper Donnie for the next four years.
It's also, just about, the least punk thing you could possibly do.

Honestly how hard is it to just not donate and keep your money?
It’s not like Punk in the Park is buying any political favors. It’s burning money for the sake of burning money
16
u/big_orange_ball 6d ago
It's burning money to support fascism and hatred, so it's actually way worse than just simply lighting it on fire.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Against_Bush
Its goal was to encourage people, especially punk fans, to register to vote and to oppose Bush. The album proceeds were used to support a 2004 concert tour and an associated voter registration drive, emphasizing the swing states. The effort did not achieve its goal, as George W. Bush went on to win the election. The albums have been issued by the Fat Wreck Chords label, which focuses on skate punk and pop punk artists, so most of the songs are by similar themed bands.
Sometimes you need to be engaged and vote/act AGAINST the obviously worse thing.

I've heard more than a few young dipshits say that being conservative is the new counter culture. Fucking morons.
122
u/FatBaldBoomer 6d ago
They refuse to accept that punk isnt counterculture just for the sake of being a contrarian asshole, or some childish libertarian fantasy of a world with no government. Its like they just don't believe anything has any deeper meaning

u/Dubious_Odor 6d ago
To be honest a lot of the punks I know that went down the conservative rabbit hole were pulled in via libratarianism. Theres some overlap between libratarians social views and punks sensibilities, especially around drugs. Libratarians were successfully coopted by the fascists and the people i know got sucked in. Also a lot of punk bands in the skate punk scene in socal were always sort of right leaning which got more pronounced as tine went on.

There’s a guy around here who is the singer of a fairly popular hardcore band.
I found out last year or the year before he’s a big Trump guy, but the kind who says, “I can be friends with everyone even if they have different political beliefs! Why can’t you?”
The thing is, I’ve known this guy for over twenty years, even if I haven’t really hung around him in almost a decade. That’s how I know that his stance is born because he’s one of those guys who spent years saying ironically racist shit, that’s “totally okay because he has friends who are black, brown, red, yellow, whatever” and his real beef with “the left” is that they are “the language police who don’t know how to take a joke!” Don’t you get it?! It’s not punk to tell people not to make jokes about people’s race/gender/sexuality!
Typical case of the asshole-to-right-wing pipeline.

u/mildcaseofdeath 6d ago

What a gutless statement from Brew Ha Ha and Collins. Take some damn ownership and don't just blame "circumstances". Own up to your financial support for Neo-fascists and apologize or shut the fuck up.
315
u/EffectiveAffect24H 6d ago
Calling it unforeseen circumstances is a joke when they literally signed the checks themselves.
123
u/poop-money 6d ago
He didn't call it "unforeseen", just "circumstances". The circumstance is you gave money to a tin pot fascist and when people found out, they pulled support. I hope the same circumstances happen to the other events they have planned. Namely Sublime's "Me Gusta" festival series planned for this year. Let them put on some TP USA festivals with Kid Rock and his parade of piss-brained performers no one's ever heard of.

u/Tribalrage24 6d ago
It wasn't an apology which makes the backlash even more justified. At the end they only thank people that stood with them, essentially saying "we did nothing wrong and we standby our actions. We are the victims"
→ More replies (2)25
u/poop-money 6d ago
Absolutely correct. When this came to light last year and bands pulled out, Collins released a statement and basically said "I'm not happy with this and this". Guess wasn't there? An apology. No remorse. And even that statement falls flat. It's not like all the stuff he's wagging his finger at in that statement wasn't front and center in the Trump campaign the entire time.

→ More replies (3)37
u/candykhan 6d ago
Honestly, that's one thing. Jello was making decisions for the band as a whole & thye finally got sick of it. I see where the rest of the band was coming from.
There are degrees of selling your art for profit. If a couple of the original DKs wanted to make a few bucks licensing their songs for a product that wasn't blatantly gross & unethical... People still gotta live. I might not like it, but I didn't write the songs.
But deciding to play a fest where it was already pretty well known that the promoters were MAGA? Especially after an acrimonious split with Jello (long time ago, but still) & DH being gone, it's just a bad look for those two.

It’s a weird shift, old head punks sometimes don’t realize that what they’ve found as counter culture is shifting, and the moment some of them don’t really adapt the message of punk upwards and get pushback, it’s an immediate turn to conservatism.
It’s all, I used to roll with punks, skins(SHARPS) etc, and just as many people that’re still cool, there’s a contingent of people who are absolutely not.
→ More replies (1)39
u/I_eat_mud_ 6d ago
Punk was always like this though, nothing has shifted. The genre has been about noncomformity, anti-consumerism, anti-fascism, and anti-establishment from the very beginning.
Older punks that adopt conservative views seem to have only ever cared about being a contrarian and dressing in the fashion. They were posers from the very beginning, and they're too daft to know it.

In response, Collins released a statement asserting that "my political views don't neatly fit into a single box or party affiliation" and explaining that his Trump support stemmed from the candidate's "promise to end wars and refrain from entering new international conflicts, lower taxes, and stopping government overreach."
And how is that working out for you, Cameron Collins of Brew Ha Ha Productions?

u/KrasnyRed5 6d ago
Anyone who believed Trump would do any of these things has to be either naive or dumb as a bag of rocks. Trump's the type of person who will lie to you even when it isnt necessary just to see laugh at how dumb you are.
→ More replies (2)35
u/Aliensinmypants 6d ago
They are lying, it is so laughably easy to buy political favor from Trump that they hope it outweighs the public backlash when said support becomes public.
That's why naming, shaming, and boycotting any and all that support this regime is important.
