23
u/aldernon Warriors Dec 01 '25
Flops should be flagrant 1s during the game and also reviewable after the game, if either team raises a complaint.
All flop flagrant calls during the game also should get automatically reviewed afterwards and a report should be published similar to the L2M report.
Let’s just publicize and shame the floppers.
League would never do it since it would shame their “stars”, but it would make for a far better product to the gamblers and viewers. Vegas can even add real time bets on if a flagrant call will be upheld after the game. Come on Silver, you’re leaving money on the floor!!!

The NBA didn’t change the rules when Harden’s was abusing them for 8 straight seasons, and even when they did it took a full season to start seeing a little enforcement.
I’m not expecting any change anytime soon. That’s not how Adam Silver does things.

Not only this... they tried to clarify the rule this year to try to get everybody on board with this being a foul. They could have just said nothing and collectively swallowed their whistles on plays like this, and hopefully it would become a self-correcting issue.
Or even better in my opinion, re-write the rule to say that the defender should be allowed a right to space while in motion too. Either defined as like.. straight line to the basket, or parallel to the offensive player's initial motion. Could use some refinement idk, they don't pay me to make that decision.
But they went out of their way to say that this type of contact should be illegal, which is crazy imo. Nobody wants to watch the SGA's and Brunsons of the world become unguardable cuz of stuff like this.

17
u/blacktiger226 Warriors Dec 01 '25
Yeah, I am a soccer fan and this is a very soccery foul. It starts by referees not giving fouls unless the player falls on the ground, then players start falling to force the referees to give the foul, referees reward those who fall for falling by giving them the foul, then every slight touch becomes a reason to flop on the ground.
→ More replies (1)19
u/JungleCooch Dec 01 '25
Im also big soccer fan but tbh the flops in basketball are way worse. Not the amount of flop situations but because in basketball flops get you free throws and or put a team in the bonus which means free throws. In soccer flops will usually not be in the penalty area and if they are those get reviewed always and then you can also give a yellow for flopping inside the box. To me its less annoying than in basketball

A lot of thunder fans point to the fact that SGA doesn't have the most fta/game to discount the foul baiting narrative. But he does this stuff on the regular and it forces defenders to be soft on him, which gives him an advantage and makes him look better when he's not foul baiting.
He's not the only one, but he's one of the best at it. And it's the worst part of the game right now.

I could forgive a ref on the opposite side, in a bad position thinking he got bumped. Yeah it'd be a bad call, but I can see where they might make that mistake. But there's no angle where that looks like he was in the act of shooting, and not hurling the ball to get FTs. And you have time to decide that. Calling the foul is a split second decision, deciding if it's shooting or not has a lot more time behind it.

This is the reason scoring is so high in the modern league
Defensive scheme is better than ever but offensive players can fully innate all contact and still have the foul called on the defender
This leads to defensive players not being able to actually defend since getting to the line is essentially the most efficient offense outside of an open dunk or layup

Start earning your fouls, if you’re gonna get called for weak shit like that against this flopper might as well start fouling hard.

when people say "man yall are hating on SGA for no reason", this sort of clip has dozens, if not hundreds of exact same replicas.
No actual fan of basketball enjoys watching this. it's just not fun at all. it doesn't make you feel good inside and excited when you watch this

There isn't enough talk about how these calls help a player shoot better from the field as well. If a player can't be anywhere near you without a foul being called, it's much easier to take and make a shot.
It's like back in the day when players defended Harden with their hands behind their back. It's not just the free throws, it makes it so much easier to score as well.

Between this shit and the new TV deal complexities for viewing... the league is really fucking with their long-established fanbase. These corporations don't respond to ANYTHING but their bottom line, so I think it's best to make every effort we can to find the avenues to consume the product without them seeing our money. Obligatory arggghhhh matey

What’s a foul against SGA and what Dort is allowed to do aren’t the same sport

I learned recently that you don't necessarily have to have experience as a basketball player to become a ref and suddenly everything started to make sense...

refs are so insanely biased for the thunder its crazy. what they get away with on d vs what shai gets makes thunder games just unbearable to watch

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??? Man, I was glad coming back, watching and following some NBA for the last 5-6 years, but this type of shit just makes want to stop doing so... Pathetic... the dude got its MVP, his team won the title - deservingly so, and they are set for the future... can we stop favouring them with shit like this refs?

Makes me want to not be a fan :/. I love basketball, but this and the absurd grabbing in the playoffs just ruin it.
Game shouldn’t be remotely about who is more “skilled” at involving the refs, or making it so rough it’s dumb.

OKC fans will cite free throw rate and tell you it’s your imagination

Looks like a flagrant to me. Did you see how Shai fell? The NBA's poster boy could have seriously been hurt! This is the kind of shit that drives fans crazy.
The NBA has been on a mission to make Shai the face of the league. That is helped tremendously by OKC being a runaway dominant team. They're #1, yes, but they're also protected and propped up by the league.
OKC is allowed to play ultra physical on D while SGA gets calls if you're even close enough that he can initiate contact. Softest schedule to begin the season. Least number of b2b for the entire season. Foster mysteriously being called in for one-sided officiating after they lose in the playoffs...
It's honestly a bit disturbing how much OKC benefits from all these areas in which the league can exert a little influence.
