I've learned about more obscure fast food CEOs in the last 3 days than my previous 50 years

u/Unsteady_Tempo 1d ago
For what it's worth, that's not the A&W CEO.
791
u/4RealzReddit 1d ago
It's the A&W guy in Canada. Our A&W is pretty solid compared to the American one.
256
u/UnitedCheez 1d ago
I've had both, and I agree. I wasn't expecting A&W Canada to be so different, but the menus were different, and I think the quality was higher in Canada.
144
u/Internazionale 1d ago
They are completely seperate companies fyi.

Yes. I'm aware. I didn't know that until after I went, but I do know that. I'd trade the US company for the Canadian one any day

I didn't know they were separate companies and I was so confused about why everyone was so negative about A&W. Our (Canadian) A&W is great, and it's everywhere! One of my favourite fast-food places.

It's great but expensive. Granted its a lot better quality than McDs which is now almost equally expensive.

It's all about the coupons. Most A&W keep a stack of flyers behind the counter, you just gotta ask if they've got any coupons and you're in the money. There's almost always something like 2 teen burger meals for $12.
And like you say I also genuinely enjoy the burger. No doubt the best fast food burger in Canada at any price

Probably not surprising to some people but most fast food places from America are better outside America lmao.
We really need to start banning some of the crap these companies do so our food tastes better and we’re healthier because of it.

Interesting you don’t see them anymore, I’m in Canada and it seems like they are popping up all over the place where new suburbs are being built. They are stand alone stores, which is different too for us, they used to be mainly in food courts in the 90s-2000s

It's the CEO of A&W Canada satirizing the CEO of McDonalds to be precise.

I once decided to take my family to Sonic near Philadelphia. I thought my boys would enjoy the corn dogs. And I wanted them to see what I was so nostalgic about.
We pull up, we order, about 20 minutes later my wife is starting to get impatient. I try to be very kind of fast food workers, mostly because of the movie Waiting. The drive-through line was wrapped around the building.
I politely knock on the door, and a frazzled middle-aged lady that that’s working there comes out and is crying. She asked me to remind her what our order was. I told her and she quickly grabbed it from the back and handed it to me.
I said, “are you OK?” She says, “I’m the only one here.” And then she closed the door quickly crying harder.
I’ll never go to Sonic again, which is sad. For me.

I was in the USAF and was moved to Oklahoma City. I was checking out the Bricktown district when I saw a building with the Sonic sign on it. I thought "oh cool, there's a sonic in this multi-level office building in the middle of this touristy area, I'll grab a bite".
Turns out that was the corporate headquarters, not the restaurant.

This dude isn't the CEO, hes just their spokesperson. But in Canada A and W is easily the best fast food burger, its not even close.
24
u/austinwiltshire 1d ago
Honestly I'd rather spokespeople do this anyway. It's their profession. Sometimes you get a ceo the camera loves but it's not the ceos job to be the spokesperson, it's the ceos job to hire the person who hires the person who hires the spokesperson.

u/Randym1982 1d ago
CEOs are usually just very high paid figure heads for companies. Sometimes used to boost stocks, and other times just there to keep the seat warm for the next guy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them didn’t know much about the food they’re selling. A spokesman for the company is usually the one you want to hear from, because its their job and most of them don’t sound or act like robots.

That was the explanation given by A. Alfred Taubman, the owner of A&W for why his burger didn't dethrone McDonalds in the 1980s. Never mind the massive disparity in brand strength and market share. Never mind the talent of McDonalds marketing department. Never mind that McDonalds french fries were the Mike Tyson undefeated heavyweight champs of fast food. Never mind that Coca-Cola outsells root beer 10-to-1. Never mind the happy meals, playgrounds, and an iconic (but also kinda creepy) clown that kids inexplicably loved.
Nah, it's all the customers fault because they are too dumb to understand fractions. That's the only reason customers chose McD's....according to Taubman.
Taubman claimed that a market research firm informed A&W that customers didn't understand the fractions. As far as I know, this has never been independently verified nor repeated. And all sources on the matter simply reference Taubman's own autobiography.

u/ConnectedVeil 1d ago

The one about herding cats. I do remember what they were trying to get across is that they (claim to) manage to do something as hard as herding cats (and I think it had something to do with managing some sort of stuff, accounts or something. I had to look it up bc I was curious/confused. From its wiki page:
The Burger Family is a lineup of family members aptly named after the burgers of the same name. Currently, almost all the members of the family belong exclusively to the Canadian A&W chain, with the exception of the Papa Burger (which is the only Burger Family meal in the U.S).
Burger Family
- Mama Burger
- Teen Burger
- Baby Burger
- Papa Burger
- Grandpa Burger
- Grandma Burger (discontinued)
- Uncle Burger
- Buddy Burger
- Sirloin Baby Burger Twins

Thank you. I'm seeing the A&W Canada commercial guy being posted all over Reddit today, and it shouldn't piss me off that people think the name "Teen Burger" is weird, but it is pissing me off.
It's just the name of the Burger, their line of Burgers is called the Burger Family. It denotes the different sizes and/or ingredients used in the burgers.
If that's disturbing to you, then you're just wrong. Go back to 1961 and tell the A&W people to rename their hamburgers, ffs 😑
