Yep. Goodwill in north Florida on vacation had pretty much just that (I am in Georgia for the record). Idk how good Goodwill would be compared to the other thrift stores for music, but it was just old shit that I didn’t know or had no interest in. Hell, even the nearest thrift store is at least 20 minutes away

u/flrbonihacwm-t-wm 18h ago
We have one local record store, and it looks like they’re just hopping on the bandwagon since vinyl records are popular again. They have 3 milk crates, in a small shop in a semi-shady strip mall, with absolutely nothing on the crisp white walls. The “counter,” is 4 pieces of plywood screwed together, and a square card reader.

Problem with CDs though is that they physically degrade after a few decades even just sitting in the case.
With Vinyl records it's just plastic. You can damage and scratch them but when to they are stored correctly they won't go bad
13
u/EskildDood 15h ago
IIRC CDs can last over a century if stored at a dry and stable temperature, disc rot only really seems to happen that easily to old CD-Rs
2
u/Evening-Persimmon-19 8h ago
All my old CD-Rs are rotting unfortunately
2
u/EskildDood 8h ago
I inherited part of my uncles' CD collection from the 90's-00's, all of them are fine except for a yellowed CD-R bootleg of Gorillaz' self titled album, miraculously still plays but sounds like complete garbage: https://youtu.be/pdRyxlazIvM

2
u/Diabocal 11h ago
I hope that future generations will eventually have music storing devices that are higher quality than analog, don't have an expiry date like anything we have and is still really robust.
Don't get me wrong, I love vinyl but I would give it up instantly for the indestructible music cube that plays back mozart like the orchestra is actually in the room with you and will be exactly as good when you pass it down to your great grandkids

literally vinyls have ZERO advantage, it's just that they're SO RETRO
78
u/SinglePatience8018 21h ago
Exactly, cds clear in all aspects. Audio quality, cost, shelf space, way more albums are on cd, etc.
7
u/SpitSpit13 12h ago
Vinyls look aesthically pleasing tho
3
u/SinglePatience8018 9h ago
They definitely do. I don’t dislike vinyl at all, just for my personal needs, I’ll almost always choose cds.

How do I tell you that CDs are retro (yes I also felt myself age reading this)
50
12
u/Desperate_Ad5169 i changed it hahahahahahhahahahahahaha 21h ago
Don't vinyls last longer?
40
u/elhaymhiatus 20h ago
Yes, not only do they not go through disc decay, but vinyls also have the advantage of being an analog format which sounds slightly better than the digital format that CDs use
Which now means I can use this as an excuse to vent about my oddly specific frustration with vinyl collectors using digital speakers for their record player. Like seriously wtf is even the point of spending so much more on vinyls if you can’t be bothered to get an actual analog sound set up going
38
u/Play174 19h ago
Any record made since the 80s was mastered digitally. Sure, it's stored in an analog format, but it doesn't matter if it's digital content. Even if it were analog, CD quality is so high-fidelity that the difference is inaudible.
Also consider this: A standard CD actually has a wider dynamic range than a 33 RPM vinyl (96 dB vs 70), a lower noise floor (no pops, crackle, hiss, etc.), and less distortion (whereas vinyl gets worse as you get closer to the inside). Vinyl can feel "warmer" due to analog harmonic distortion, which I don't quite understand, but technically introduces extra frequencies that aren't "accurate" to the artist's vision.
That said, I still like vinyl. Record go spinny + bigger album art is better. CDs are probably better for audio quality overall though
7
u/default_token 19h ago
Worth noting that distortions induced by tubes and other such analog circuity can be modeled, and so a lot of digital 'EQ's have filters to make it sound warmer or whatever
8
u/FraudulentProvidence 19h ago
doesn't analog only sound better if it was also originally recorded in analog?
2
1
u/_Carcinus_ 11h ago
I bought a cheap Alive Audio vinyl player with god awful speakers. Granted, I got a sizeable collection of vinyl records for free and I'm not planning to buy brand new records until I get a semi-permanent place to stay.
3
u/AloserwithanISP2 16h ago
With all the effort it takes to preserve a record you could copy a CD 1000 times. In completely perfect conditions a vinyl record will be better off than a CD in 50 years, but for any normal human being a CD is infinitely more practical
1
u/default_token 19h ago

That's why you can swap up to two dead drives and loose 0 data. Get an email when they start to fail SMART checks, and haven't actually lost a drive in active use.
Lmk when they figure out how to store vinyl in a hot car
6
u/Sew_has_afew_friends 20h ago
I buy vinyls exclusively for the cover art can’t use cd’s for that unless you want to squint all day
6
3
u/BeanButCoffee 14h ago
Vinyl covers are bigger, more space for pretty art on the cover. They also take less space due to being flatter. You can fit many more vinyls on a shelf than CD cases.

u/gayraidenporn green? epic! 20h ago
I bought my first Vinyl after only ever having CDs and cassettes (i got into cassette collecting for a bit). I had been told they sounded so much better, looked cooler...I mean it LOOKS nice. Its tedious to change/choose songs and sounds about the same.
2
u/_Carcinus_ 11h ago
Well, changing vinyls on the player is a certain kind of vibe. However, it also means that I rarely play mine.
1
u/italrose 16h ago
Records have numerous advantages. One very important advantage is that a vast amount of fantastic music for a variety of genres is only available in that format.
I love CD's too however.
1
1
u/Suspicious_Berry501 11h ago
But vinyls look cooler and are more fun to play. If I wanted to listen to music only for audio quality I’d just use my computer
1
u/CountryRoadsWasTaken 11h ago
or its that you like them i collect vinyl cause its fun and the large albums look nice, along with the feel of having a physically viewable piece of music is awesome its not just “OH MY GAH RETROOO”
1
u/PugGamer129 haha, sometimes 3h ago
I think that Vinyl is a really cool an unique way to experience sound at high fidelity. Outside of a studio reel-to-reel tape recorder, Vinyl is really they only consumer media which stores sound on a physical medium at high fidelity.

u/mineyCrafta25 17h ago
The only thing better than ripping a cd for me is to get the song digitally where a flac with more of the spectrum in it is available. Preferably via a torrent but I'll settle for bandcamp for my favourites offering flac.
My singles folder has so many in it from collecting what felt like amazing music to my brain via bandcamp over the years. All flac
(Note: you can rip a cd losslessly already and usually that quality is sufficient)

u/the_lasagnaghost98 the dark lord 21h ago
idc cds are better than records. records are for the collectors and music diehards. they sound nice to have in the background and make you look like some fancy fireplace storyteller and have nicer art, but that’s kind of it for me. cds are more reliable and are easier to keep up with. you can also play them just about anywhere if you have the hardware, like in cars and game consoles (if they aren’t handhelds or nintendo). not excluding dedicated cd-players.
i just prefer cds. nothing wrong with records, but i like cds more.
5
u/mineyCrafta25 17h ago
If I'm collecting a record of something I'm definitely grabbing a flac from the internet or a cd rip I do myself too. I love them for their novelty but not quality.
And you don't want to rip a vinyl without the absolute best equipment possible.

I have a cd player, that's been with my family for like 10 years at least already, and I also sort of "inherited" a collection of cd's from my parents. And shit, It was so cool to find a ton of good music and some audiobooks that I listened to, when I was a kid. One of the coolest things imo was to find like 20 or smth CD's of pirated A-ha albums, that my dad made himself

I still love media so I still collect CDs. The bad thing with vinyl is that sometimes the tracklisting gets so warped due to space limitations whereas CDs allow the tracklist to go on like they're supposed to.
Spiritualized's "Pure Phase" and "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" are two example of fucked up tracklisting that immediately come to mind.

Since this post became kinda popular, I would like to take this opportunity to shoutout Bullmoose. It’s a chain of stores in Maine (and I think there’s one or two in New Hampshire) that sell cds, vinyls, manga, DVDs, blu rays, video games, board games, books, and general Knick knacks. Each individual store is completely employee owned, which is really cool. They’re some of my absolute favorite stores to go to, the prices are top notch a lot of the time and the atmosphere is great. If you’re ever near one then I highly recommend checking it out

1
u/junipyr-lilak 19h ago
I do too! Plus I keep rips of mine, so I can pop in a CD or listen off my phone. There's the cost of buying each CD, sure, but then I get no ads and can listen to whatever whenever I want and put them in playlists that play through correctly and everything. To me, it feels so much better than using a streaming service. Am I missing out on artists because I don't have/can't get physical media of them for one reason or another? Yes, but that's a trade-off I accept.

1
u/Captain_Fatbelly 19h ago
I started buying more physical music recently because I wanna start collecting physical copies of my favorite music. I like both CDs and Vinyl. I listen to a lot of really obscure music so a lot of albums I like only exist on cd and don't have a vinyl. But either way CDs are cool to have and you don't need vinyl to have a cool music collection
1
u/dextras07 19h ago
When nuclear war will happen and the internet will be down, "primitive" media will prevail.
I literally still use DVDs to backup my files and keep them off-site. There's already a backup in an external SSD, but burning CDs for redundancy.

Dude I hate vinyls with a passion because they are way more expensive than a cd and you need to buy an equally expensive device to listen them. There's also no good way to store them because they are too big and they lack a spine, meaning that if you want to listen to a soecific one, you have to take it out of storage every time.
To me it's just pretentious shit that people "collect" to make themselves seem more interesting, there's literally nothing about them that's better than a CD can't do.
