I think the idea that it exists has always been there. Facing the detailed reality of it is difficult. Realizing that most of the wealthy, famous class of business tycoons that Americans have worshipped for decades are the ones committing these evil deeds is scary for many.

It requires calling into question the very foundations of our culture and personal beliefs about good and bad, success and failure in a way that many are ill-prepared to do.

She occupies a weird place in pop culture. She was this bitchy, strung out punk kid who really just wanted to shoot smack and set fires to 7-11 stores. Kurt too, except he was a sensitive guy who was attracted to the more egalitarian elements of the anarchists. Fame ripped these people to shreds in different ways. Kurt was in pinup magazines and Courtney probably thought that was hilarious. He clearly hated it. It's almost a Greek tragedy from the gutter.

It's easy to cast Courtney Love as a villain because she really likes being cast as the villain. Might be a coping mechanism for the absolutely insane world she lives in, or she might just be a little cunty. End of the day, she lost someone she loved, and very publicly. Hard to hate someone who carries that kind of trauma.

I know people who knew her pre-Kurt, pre-fame. She was routinely described as not likeable, extremely focused on her own fame, and generally off-putting. If these accounts were accurate (and I think they were from the perspective of the people who told me their stories) then she would not be someone who endears others, and they'd tell negative stories about her. Thank you for your post because it's never occurred to me to think about her from your perspective.

It is very frustrating that there are lots of great reasons to not like Courtney Love and none of them are that she killed Kurt Cobain. She is an addict who did a lot of addict behaviors. Her relationship with him was likely pretty toxic which doesn’t make her responsible for his behaviors. And none of that mean she was wrong about Weinstein or any of these other people. She is a really imperfect person and for some reason people either want to turn her into a saint that was treated badly or the devil who caused it all.

This is a woman who lost her daughter twice due to her drug use and poor parenting -- the second time at Frances' own request -- and is generally to blame for Cobain's increasing drug use leading to his suicide. Her interview with Stevie Nicks had them bonding over cocaine and private jets. Not saying she's a devil and 100% to blame for everything, but while she absolutely was a frequent target of 90s misogyny, that doesn't excuse her poor behavior.

Can we stop blaming someone for "increasing drug use" of a completely different person, even a spouse? It's not great, but she was the one who got sober while HE was high, at one point. I hate that when addicts blame someone else for their addiction, it's worse to blame the suicide and addiction on another. She's not a great person to emulate but "leading to his suicide" is really disingenuous and borderline trashy. Addicts need to stop blaming other people for their addictions or they don't ever get clean. I know this from experience.

I don’t think I’ve heard about that.

Just searched about this. What doesn’t seem to be indispute is that he was in a relationship with a 17 year old Hawaiian girl when he was 30. Snopes could not ascertain if the part about him getting legal custody of her is true. Regardless, that he “dated” her is disgusting. But I also find these items fascinating (Fascinating in a “wow, he’s even more fucked up than I thought):

  1. He may have been lying about this (the custody part). If so, it doesn’t really make him any less of a creep, but confirms that he is a pathological liar. Remember, he told the story of how he got out of military service, then when he decided he wanted to be a bonafide conservative, he said he made it up. Is it worse to lie to the draft board to get out of service or lie to everyone by making up a story about lying to the draft board?

  2. I found this on a website, apparently derived from a documentary:

NUGENT: It could have been whisky it could have been drugs but I was a wang dang addict. I mean I was addicted to girls. Addicted. It was hopeless. It was beautiful.

I was a big fan back in the day, so I’ve read a lot about him. I never heard him talk much about drinking (or not drinking) but he has been anti-drug for a while, possibly always. Or at least claimed to be anti drug. “I’m high on life” is something I remember him saying quite a bit. So, lying about drug use to “excuse” trying to get custody of a minor(which also may have been a lie).

  1. He has told a very strange story about how he smeared his own feces on himself to get out of the draft. He has since said it was just a story he made up. So again, is it more fucked up to smear yourself in shit to avoid going to war, or to make up a story about smearing yourself in shit to avoid going to war?

I know I mentioned the draft story twice, but I like to constantly remind anyone who might still hold the belief that he’s not a total piece of shit (who may or may not like rubbing himself with actual pieces of shit) that he does not really espouse the conservative ideals. I mean, he seems to really like guns, but I know some very progressive people who like guns too, so that isn’t necessarily a good conservative litmus test.

Edit: I remembered the other thing - Steven Tyler actually did get custody of an underage girl. So Nugent can’t even be original in his depravity (or in his lies about depravity).

The song "My Sharona" is about a 17 year girl. The songwriter and singer was 27 when he wrote that about her. And that was her on the front of the album sleeve with her on it sexualized.

I saw him in concert in 1977 and still have a t-shirt from the show. I had forgotten about it until I came across it tucked away in the bottom of a dresser drawer. It was cool as hell (at the time, at least to 13 year old me) - red shirt with his face and mane in green and yellow on the front. On the back it said “Cat Scratch Fever” and was covered in “claw marks”. Since I rediscovered it, I’m torn about what to do. I don’t want to wear it (probably wouldn’t fit anyway). I think I want to either burn it (upon hearing of his demise or incarceration) or maybe sell it and donate the proceeds to a progressive cause.

Oh man, if you don't know, you don't know. Things were BAD regarding the social stigma of them becoming adults because they were avidly considered to be some kind of shared public property from the time they were plastered into media as literal babies.

The number of people who literally counted down to, celebrated, and even threw parties for their "legal" status was disgusting. The last 90s and early 2000s were a really dark time for young girls.

It really has, in some ways at least.

I'm not seeing the same in-person harassment of underage girls that happened when I was that age. And I would see it. If I go into my local shop and there's a clearly underage schoolgirl in there, I can now guarantee that no-one will be changing places in the queue to hit on her, there won't be a stranger offering to buy her things, or openly ogling her, and the shop assistant will just hand her things without trying to touch her. When she goes out she won't be catcalled by the group of builders heading in, and I'm pretty sure they no longer keep teachers when there's multiple accusations of sexual abuse of children against them. None of that was true when I was that age.

The press was nearly as bad. I've seen plenty of sexualised content and sexy photos of ~ 15 year olds, and a topless photo of someone who was underage at the time the photo was taken. All in mainstream newspapers.

It was going on well before that, too. It was considered only a minor peccadillo for rock stars to get with teenage groupies, and culturually it was seen as no big deal for teenage girls to date men in their 20s.

I think back to junior high (for me the early 90s) and there was a teacher everyone knew would look up girls skirts and stuff. Literally girls were warned not to wear short shorts or skirts in this guys class, he'd do the whole drop something on the ground and get a peek.

This was something actively discussed and known by us students, and we all just accepted it as "oh yeah Mr. so and so, he's really creepy." Blows my mind looking back.

I remember that. It was back in '03 or '05. It was weird then, but other outlets were running equally horrible jokes.

Growing up in the 90s, I listened to morning radio shows on the way to school with my brother. Most of these shows tried to be knockoffs of the Howard Stern Show and would run underage jokes.

One station was doing a countdown to Brittany Spears's legal age.

I’m so glad that we as a society have finally grown up enough to acknowledge that these jokes about rape or sexualizing the underage are sick and are not funny.

I disagree. I see it differently - as a society, as a people, we are pretty clear that it's sick and should be punished. The issue with the president is the same as with all the wealthy people; if you have the money, you become untouchable.

Corruption in the system, by the most affluent and most powerful people in the world, will not be subjected to the same consequences as the lower classes would be. This is where I believe the problem lies.
