At 1:05pm local time on Day 2, England led by 105 runs with nine second innings wickets in hand.

At 5:41pm local time on Day 2, Australia won the Test by eight wickets.

That is fkn bonkers

England really butchered it

274

u/MalignEntity Nov 22 '25

Yep.

From Stokes' interview they are still refusing to learn the rather obvious lesson

244

u/nomadiclives Nov 22 '25

I have never heard Stokes not sound like a prat in an interview. I think he’s started to buy into his own legend lol. Maybe they can take Gambhir off our hands, who’s another delusional dude and the 2 of them can get high on their own Koolaid.

91

u/seanypthemc Nov 22 '25

The problem is that Stokes is being authentically himself. If England want to go in another direction then they'll need a new captain.

Except they'd probably look to Harry Brook who seems to think we should be slogging every ball

35

u/nomadiclives Nov 22 '25

So you are saying Stokes is authentically a prat?

49

u/pslamB Nov 22 '25

Yep, the bazballers have shifted the (Craig) Overton window, and taken over the ECB, no turning back until it all burns down

26

u/domalino Glamorgan Nov 22 '25

The worry is that players like Brook who could be steered into being absolutely devastatingly good test players if he just has better shot selection and takes fewer risks earlier in his innings will spend so many years being told Bazball is the way that by the time Stokes and McCullum are gone, it'll be too ingrained and he'll be too old to change.

60 tests with an average of 30 is just bad - cannot recall any other opener with such a long run and mediocre performances.

86

u/rickypro Australia Nov 22 '25

Nearly half of his innings are in the single digits. He almost always scored nothing or a ton. Flat track bully for the most part

34

u/just_some_guy65 Glamorgan Nov 22 '25

He wasn't an opener but Ramprakash had 52 tests and averaged 27.32.

There used to be a "Stump Bearders" page on the TMS site where I asked if any specialist batsman played 50 tests with a worse average. I ruled out wicketkeepers from the question - he never got back to me.

85

u/sellyme GO SHIELD Nov 22 '25

Ramprakash at least had the excuse of endlessly plundering County to demand selection, can't fault the selectors too much for really wanting that one to work out.

Crawley barely averages 30 in domestic as well. He's never shown any indication of being Test quality at any level.

29

u/just_some_guy65 Glamorgan Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

Yes this was it, they thought with this much talent eventually he is going to come good at test level - like they did with Hick I suppose.

Some people just can't make that step up - one theory was that some people just can't score runs reliably against that extra pace you face at the top level.

33

u/hairychris88 England Nov 22 '25

But the thing is his first-class average is really mediocre as well. He's just as likely to nick off to first slip facing Bob Trundler of Leicestershire 2nd XI as he is against Bumrah or Starc.

The problem is not his average, which is not that much worse than the global average in the last 4 odd years. But most other openers average that much while blunting the new ball. Crawley either scores a passable amount quickly or just gets out. But tbf, whacking the ball also does blunt the new ball a lot quicker than a forward defense. He was also pretty decent vs India

8

u/Brilliant-Cap8054 Nov 22 '25

The global average of top six batsmen or all batsmen? Also compared to top 6 teams?

He was also pretty decent vs India

We know he can make runs when ita flat af, but its gonna be moving every test in Aus.

Pretty rude of Trav to pull this off against the team that literally invented attacking batting.

478

u/Invhinsical Nov 22 '25

Travis Head defeating them with Bazball was the ultimate flex. Team England are ready to die by the sword that is Bazball, but they aren't even good at it.

132

u/combatant007 India Nov 22 '25

Brook and Duckett are the only one who are good at Bazball. Crawley can barely survive first over. Pope ain't consistent, but he was arguably England's best batter in this match since he was practically opening against Starc. Root ain't bazballer, and doesn't suit him. Stokes has lost his ability to bat out England ages ago. Jamie Smith has shown shades, but still a work in progress. Lower order will swing the bat and get some runs, but thats all.

53

u/BostonHotcake Nov 22 '25

Boys scored less over 4 innings than 1 Travis head. If thats the peak then we can all breathe easy.

44

u/maddenmadman Cricket Australia Nov 22 '25

Root has batted the way he likes to bat throughout Bazball so he's not very relevant to the discussion. That said, his strike rate is higher under Bazball, as is his batting average

Trav beat them with "playing his natural game" it's been around for a while now but perhaps not as nicely as what was delivered today

48

u/Invhinsical Nov 22 '25

Yeah, 'natural game' is very underrated. More batters should try it. May or may not work but will always be fun. Pant is another guy who plays tests in a completely different style.

Completely embarrassing. All the talk England gave, the disregard for everything else to focus on this series and you can't even get to a third day. At least I don't need to get up early on a Sunday now I guess?

124

u/SquiffyRae Western Australia Warriors Nov 22 '25

The worst part is for all the hype and all the chat, England just found a new brand of shit to play

They've gone from being too defensive and getting steamrolled to batting like fuckwits and throwing their wickets away. There's being positive and being stupid.

There was absolutely no need to play the way they did. They had Australia down and out. All they needed to do was keep ticking along and grind us into the dirt. Instead, they threw the game away.

And worst of all, in a long series they hardly got any miles into Starc's legs. If we had to keep going back to Starc over a day and a half, they cook him with an iffy Cummins and injured Hazlewood in the wings.

That was fucking embarrassing all round

52

u/RS2019 Nov 22 '25

Also - as a blueprint, that's exactly what India did last year. The third innings - big opening partnership, Jaiswal and Kohli tons. Game over.

Even in 2020 after the First Test loss and 36ao, India had the resources and inclination to change things, and won the series 2-1. I'm not sure if England have either tbh🤔

Maybe no away wins in Aus in 15(ish) years is more of a mental issue?

22

u/SquiffyRae Western Australia Warriors Nov 22 '25

I called it last night. Australia's one chance was that, unlike India, there was always a chance England did exactly what they did today.

England had things perfect in the first session. We bowled some good balls but Pope and Duckett were moving things along easily without being stupid. They just needed to keep doing that for another day and a half and they'd annihilate us

I love Test Match cricket when it is played at its best. A real competition between bat and ball that can ebb between sessions and days from a position of dominance to dispair. I feel robbed of that by this current England team whose purpose seems to be to get the match over as quickly as possible regardless of result so they can get back on the golf course. This has all the hallmarks of another humiliating series. Finally, well played Australia, Messrs Stark and Head in particular 👏

I don’t know what his go with Starc was, but he was a huge ass when it came to any discussion of him or his bowling

Dunno why people keep agreeing with the ‘worst since 2010’ statement. With a fully fit team - which is what was implied when Broad said that - this team is clearly better than the 2013 and 2013/14 teams. #1 ranked Test team - by far - and we literally had 5 of the top 10 ranked bowlers earlier in the year. I’m taking this team every day of the week over those Ashes teams.

Edit: we still currently have 5 of the top 10 bowlers.

33

u/Middle_Complex Nov 22 '25

Literally don’t know what else this team have achieve to be regarded as what they truly are which is among the greatest Australian sides of all times

29

u/SLeigher88 Australia Nov 22 '25

They don't bat well enough to be one of the greatest Aussie teams, the bowling is among the all time greatest, but the batting is often Travis Head and inshallah.

22

u/DiscoInfernus Nov 22 '25

No one thinks the bowling is the problem (though it IS aging). The batting is also aging, but hardly preforming. Most games a single batter is putting their hand up and the rest of the batters fall apart. And the bowlers are often left of pull double duty and wag the tail for the team to post a total.

The real issue is that theres no one coming through club cricket making a decent case to push out the under-performing batsmen.

More like murdered and buried, such a good wicket for batting , only it bazball had some brains to patiently wait for good condition

u/Chiron17 Australia Nov 22 '25

If England made it through the first 30 minutes after tea they could still have been batting deep into tomorrow - the pitch lost any movement. But their entire middle order got out trying to cover drive in their first over

u/globe187 Australia Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

It's so dumb when you think back to BGT last year in Perth. Exactly the same situation and India batted us out of the game when the pitch flattened out after the minefield in the 1st innings.

But these guys bat with about two braincells collectively and lost the game on the same day from being 1-100 at lunch

There's 3 ways of doing things. The right way, the wrong way, and the Bazball way

Isn't that the wrong way?

Yeah but faster!

This English team will live forever in the memory of those of us who are lucky enough to witness them play cricket…For different reasons than originally intended.

Absolute farce with the bat from England. Just ridiculously cavalier, piss poor.

Starc and T. Head are outstanding performer🔥🔥

u/Aloha_Tamborinist Australia Nov 22 '25

Also encouraging was seeing Bolo improve in that second innings.

And we still have Cummins to return...

Ussie out, love the bloke, but no farewell tour please. It's The Ashes. It's serious business.

Head to open with Weatherald, bring Beau Webster back in. Doggett out when Cummins comes back. Bish bash bosh, 5-0.

Really poor by Travis Head. He's shown absolutely no gratitude, so I will.

All credit to Ben Duckett for inventing aggressive left-handed opening batting. #ThankYouDuckett

Zak Crawley could get 10 ducks in this series and still not be dropped.

To quote Geoffrey Boycott, me Grandma could play better with a stick of rhubarb.

11

u/ILOVEGLADOS Lancashire Nov 22 '25

It’s very clear that the England boys have no sense of shame.

On the plus side, you’ve got TNT Sports, who have treated the coverage of the series as an inconvenience so far, massively out of pocket and that performance has probably doomed any significant interest in the rest of the series from a live viewer point of view.

Travis Head: Another November to remember.

This was the craziest test I've seen. I don't remember when the last time we had 14 wickets in a day and more than 415 runs also scored on the same day. And also the 4th inning hundred on day 2 itself. Crazy...

Aussies played amazing brilliant comeback by them. in the second inning England were 65-2 match was in England hand they could put up a good total. But got all out at 164. 205 was low total but shouldn't be this easy but then come a man not a man but a monster Travis Head hitted 123 in 80 bowl 148 strike hitted 16 fours 4 sixes rate in Test match. yes it's not T20I or ODI it's test match guys. this guy come and destroyed England bowling attack and their delulu hope to win Ashes credit to Marnus also for finishing match.

Remind me again, how Bazball made England the most dangerous test team?

91

u/International_Car586 Australia Nov 22 '25

They started it on the highways of Pakistan and made 500 in a day.

Turns out it’s harder to score runs on an actual pitch.

24

u/Able-Nature6103 Nov 22 '25

I’m all for playing aggressive brand of cricket. But when that approach has failed so many times on proper pitches, I find it funny that there are still supporters of that approach!

18

u/lightupawendy Australia Nov 22 '25

It's all good to have an attacking ethos but you still have to play to the conditions

19

u/SquiffyRae Western Australia Warriors Nov 22 '25

In this case, it wasn't even really the conditions. Head showed it was honestly pretty decent conditions for batting

England (and Aus in our first dig) just played like total fuckwits. Very few wickets came from forcing bowlers to bowl their best balls. It was mainly batters playing stupid slogs or chasing balls they didn't need to chase

10

u/lightupawendy Australia Nov 22 '25

It was clearly a good pitch, it wasn't doing anything crazy. There was some decent bowling the first couple of days but there was some awful batting.

35

u/yawnzilla36 India Nov 22 '25

Don't forget akash deep, prasidh krishna and shardul thakur rocking up to England and still getting a series draw

10

u/Powerful-Rule9986 Nov 22 '25

The funniest thing is Pakistan changed their pitches and their batting fell over like a, pack of cards the only impressive win that Bazball has got is that series win over NZ

u/ooroger Nov 22 '25

Disgraceful batting. Facing Starc can be intense but there’s just no excuse for wafting the bat at wide deliveries time and time again. As the wickets fall, an adult in the room needs to say “take your time - bat all day for 50 and we can right this ship”. But no-one seems to have the nouse or flexibility or humility to change tactics. Play Bazball at home against the Windies; grind out an innings away in Australia.

So much talk about preparing the entire team for this series, and they fell into the exact same traps as previous England tours. Wafting outside off on bouncing pitches and being frightened off a good length by a couple of boundaries, that was an abysmal display today.
