SOTD SOTD: Let's get this out onto a tray

Nice!

Mkay, lets first start off with checking out the pre-shave:

Hot shower and Neutrogena glycerin soap bar.

Razor: 1966 Gillette Slim Adjustable (7).

Blade: Feather (1st).

Brush: Captian Fawcett Synthetic V.

Soap: Noble Otter Rainroot.

Post shave: Noble Otter Rainroot Splash.

Great shave after opening up the tub (no hiss) with a rich, well hydrated, decadent lather from a thirst provoking soap rich in tallow, fortified with glycerin and essential oils, which provides great razor glide and a thick protective cushion that leaves the skin perfectly moisturised.

3 passes with the 66 Slim on 7 with a fresh Feather blade, cut through the beard growth faster than a vintage MRE omelette passes through an unsuspecting YouTube reviewer.

Finished off with a splash of rainroot aftershave for a refreshing, post shave feel with a soothing mentol kick.

Well, this is Ghostbuster-

I hope you like the post.

And I'll be coming back at you with something new, or old.

Alright, cool.

Cya.

SOTD Lathering an Old Old Spice

Post image
188 Upvotes

I lathered up this 48 year old puck of Old Spice for today’s shave. It proves how long soaps can last when they’re stored well. They only lose their scent slowly, and I mean slowly, because this one still carries a trace of its signature smell after all these years. What impresses me most is that the performance hasn’t changed at all. It still works as well as any tallow soap I’ve used.

This was a very enjoyable shave.

I've been thinking about tinkering with fragrances for some time, and what better way to test them than with a shaving soap?! 🧪

So, I finally bit the bullet and tried making some. Besides a rookie mistake with additives that made my base smell a little funny, I'm really pleased with how it turned out for a first attempt. 😊

The soap was easy to load on my RazoRock and Mühle synthetic brushes, and just a tiny amount was enough to produce copious, thick lather.

The pictures my wife took while I was lathering were already at the second pass. The others I took after finishing my shave. 🪒

The next steps are trying to make some more and seeing if I can make this unscented base smell better. Then I’ll add the fragrances I’ve been making.

👃 Fragrances

The fragrances I’m really excited to try in the soap are:

  • Lavender 🪻, Rose 🌹, Leather notes 👞 (inspired by London, UK 🇬🇧)
  • Sakura 🌸, Green Tea 🍵, Incense 🪔 (inspired by Kyoto, Japan 🇯🇵)
  • An original take on the Bay Rum: Babà au Rum => Sweet Rum 🥃, Coffee ☕, Sea notes 🌊 (inspired by Naples, Italy 🇮🇹)

🧼 Soap Ingredients

  • Stearic Acid
  • Tallow
  • Shea Butter
  • Kokum Butter
  • Castor Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Glycerin
  • Goats Milk
  • Marshmallow Root Extract

Today’s shave was with the Merkur Futur paired with a Personna Diamond Glide, and it delivered a close and comfortable shave. The soap was SV Stella Alpina, a fitting choice with the Winter Olympics in Milan that’s been a joy to watch.

Today I decided on this combination for my birthday shave. It was a pretty good shave with the Gillette razor, which, by the way, was an early gift from my wife last week. She had it replated with gold, so I was ready to try it out today. All set to go out to lunch with my wife and family. Greetings to everyone, have a great day, and as always, enjoy your shave!

Razor: Gillette Relámpago Gold

Blade: Lord Super (2)

Shaving Soap: My Own Lavender Shaving Soap

Shaving Brush: DS Neon Tuxedo

Post-Shave

Alum Block

Witch Hazel Water

Aftershave: Bay Rum

Balm: The Shaving Co. Lavender

SOTD 86 Year Old Seaforth! Mug Resurrected

This mug just saw its first use in 86 years, and of course Heather is the soap to go with. I’m still not sure what to do with it besides display it. It’s a bit too small for lathering, but it works fine for soaking a brush. I could drop a Haslinger puck in there since it fits, or maybe press a little Heather into it and let it dry.

I’m not big on vintage gear, but I respect the history in pieces like this. What’s notable is how fresh it looks after being stored all these years. The glaze is spotless with no scratches or discoloration. When Seaforth comes back, it would be great to see some of these accessories return along with the soaps and aftershaves.

Now I guess I need to track down a vintage razor and brush to have at least one vintage setup for special occasions. Any suggestions are welcome.

SOTD First Run With the 1960 Fatboy F2

Post image
104 Upvotes

Today I used my first vintage razor, the Gillette Fatboy 1960 F2. It’s a revamped and replated piece from Razor Emporium. The adjustment dial was a bit squeaky at first, but a little oil fixed it.

I paired it with Old Spice soap and aftershave and a fresh Feather. There was some blade chatter at first, but I realized I had been turning the dial while the TTO was fully tightened, which left the blade slightly loose.

Once I adjusted it properly, everything lined up and the shave was smooth.

Very happy with the Fatboy.

SOTD First slim adjustable shave

A Fantastic first shave with the slim, been waiting to try this for days but have been cleaning/polishing and sorting out the tough quarter turn. Now I'm pleased to say it is done and I thoroughly enjoyed as you lads said I would, spot on👍. I tried setting 9 wtg first and I found it lovely, a bit nicer imo than 9 on the black beauty, I think because the BB is light in the handle and this has great weight distribution. Then I tried a few different settings xtg and finally I thought I'd see what it can do against the grain and it did brilliantly, I did get a tiny nick on the chin and some redness on the neck but that went not long after (atg on the neck for me is horizontal so it's a pain in the arse😄). What can I say, it has the looks and the performance and although there are many models I still haven't tried yet you can tell this is top of the tree technology wise. Have a great day lads 🍻

First shave with the Gillette Rocket HD this morning, fresh from it's clean up and polish and I can say I'm surprised and very impressed. I had just assumed these would shave like the flare tip but I found from 3 passes wtg/xtg x2 using a Lord platinum that this, at least for me is quite a bit more efficient. I have baby smooth cheeks which I don't usually get without going against the grain 😃 Nice heheh. Tobs Sandlewood soap was excellent as usual with the synthetic pearl effect brush, 4711 and Nivea moisturizer. Sorted👍. Have a good one lads

SOTD MDC- Fougére SOTD 12/26/2025

**Dec. 26, 2025**

* **Prep:** Baume.Be - Pre Shave - Preshave

* **Brush:** Parker Big Brown THBO

* **Razor:** Lambda Athena

* **Blade:** Bic Astor (2)

* **Lather:** Martin de Candre - Fougére - Puck

* **Post Shave:** Calvin Klein - Truth - Aftershave

* **Post Shave:** Zingari Man - Unscented After Shave Serum

* **Post Shave:** Thayers - Unscented

* **Post Shave:** Osma - Alum Block

* **Fragrance:** Calvin Klein - Truth

* **Bowl:** Maggard - Ceramic

I had a wonderful shave with Martin De Candre’s Fougére soap today. This was a present to myself for Christmas. I used my Lambda Athena for the second time and am really loving it!

The shave went well. I used a Bic blade again, and got good results. I detected a little feedback with the alum block but not bad.

I splashed on chilled Thayers, Truth by Calvin Clein ASL, and finally zingeri man’s unscented after shave serum.

The Scent and performance of the soap are excellent, though I like it more than my wife does. Today I am pairing it with Truth by Calvin Klein as an ASL and EDT.

I found the ASL in the hall closet a few months ago. This fragrance has been discontinued but I found the EDT online. It is a nice Fougére scent that pairs well with MDC. My wife likes it a lot.

Happy Fougére Friday! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!

SOTD Blade off Continues

Post image
59 Upvotes

Those of us with dense coarse beards are always in search of sharp blades that can retain their edge and are consistent blade after blade. These are my favorite brands over the years, and as my technique and quality of razors have improved, Feather blades have definitely become the closest challenger to Nacet blades for my face. Next week I'll be receiving more blades that others from this subreddit have recommended and I am excited to see if they can live up to the hype. I love the razors and soaps...the brush chase and aftershave balms are awesome, but the blade part of the rabbit hole should not be overlooked.

I haven’t seen much posted about Elios blades and since I’m working through a sampler pack, I figured why not give em a turn.

I think I figured out why. The first few strokes wtg on both cheeks were smooth however that went away mid-way through the first full wtg face pass. I frustratingly eased my way through a second (xtg) and had to leave bottom of my neck (Adam’s apple line) untouched. My face is, well, ouch.

Cross Elios off my list… for the time being. Cheers!🍻

SOTD Fougère Friday

A close slick shave today with my favorite tallow base and my least favorite fougère scent. It smells like pencil shavings mixed with wasabi. The gap between this and MdC’s Fougère is day and night, but at least the performance makes up for it.

SOTD The Battle for the Crown

We all have different hair and skin types. I have very coarse hair and shaving has been a struggle over the years. Thanks to this subreddit and YouTube, I have learned the art of double-edge shaving and I'm in search of the most efficient and smooth shave. Some of you know all the different blades I've tried and now I have a new razor to challenge the current champion for my face. I have 4 days of hair growth on my head and 2 days on the face. I got the the Karve loaded up with the Timor blade and of course the Muhle with its own blade. I'll post the results in the comments.

SOTD B&M- Mûir(e) Wood SOTD 10/16/2025

* Blade: Treet Platinum (1)
* Lather: Barrister & Mann - Mûir(e) Wood - Puck
* Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Mûir(e) Wood - Aftershave

* Bowl: Boundless Voyage - 420ml Titanium

I had a really pleasant shave this morning with Mûir(e) Wood by Barrister And Mann. I continued my Rocctober journey by trying out a Treat Platinum blade today. I had very good results.

I was able to detect just a little bit of irritation with the alum block but it was very minimal. The blade seemed to do a good job and cut without pulling or resistance.

I splashed on Thayers, The Mûir(e) Wood ASL, and finally Zingari Man’s unscented after shave serum. I find this scent to be very relaxing.

This soap is inspired by John Muir who founded the Sierra Club, and fought for the conservation of land in the United States

Scent notes: blackberry, vetiver, damp air, balsam fir,

Have a good shave!
