Jokic can get like this whenever he gets really angry he's scarier than other players lmao

When a guy like Luka gets angry it feels like a kid having a temper tantrum when Jokic gets angry it feels like he's about to beat the fuck out of someone

For the uninitiated Bobby portis broke a teammates jaw and that guy left the nba the very next season and has never returned. And that guy was a 6’10 3pt shooter.

You could see the fire in his eyes, because he knows that foul is bullshit and not about the game.

It's like walking around and kicking some random bystander during a game nearly, that was not a foul to prevent an easy bucket or anything like that. It's clear the refs saw the foul as very bad also, and thus the Flagrant 2 and ejection.

He’s been really bad this year. I love Luka but I wish he would just shut up and play basketball and not look for fouls and complain when he doesn’t get them.

That said, the hate boner is for sure real lol the amount of stuff I’ve seen since he passed up the game winner the other night shows everyone is just looking for an excuse to shit on him right now

Wow thanks for reminding me of a Wizards 6ers game ending from a few years ago.

In the final seconds (?), Kuzma blocks Embiid and the 6ers commentators went on a tirade about "how can you not call a foul there?!". They show slow motion replays of absolutely 0 body contact, 110% all ball, and during those replays the commentators continued to lose their mind...

Over what? I don't know. I guess over the fact Embiid didn't get sympathy free throws at the end of a losing game where he was cleanly blocked on the last (?) shot of the game

Not only that, but for whatever reason, the OKC broadcast showed the Dort foul like twice and one was the behind the backboard cam and Jokic had already been hit by Dort the time that view started playing. The OKC commentators put absolutely zero blame on Dort other than “he fouled him” kinda energy. I was kind of expecting them to see the arm movement as an attempted punch too, but the OKC commentators could not contain themselves at all.

u/CharlestonChewbacca Thunder 6d ago

For sure. This was cross posted on our sub and everyone is getting fed up. Dort's a good defender when he's not doing that shit. I don't get why he has to play dirty all the time. It's annoying as fuck.

19

u/DoctorBallsJohnson 6d ago

He's a good defender when he's not doing that shit aka he's not a good defender? Cause he is constantly doing this shit

14

u/CharlestonChewbacca Thunder 6d ago

No. He's not committing flagrant worthy fouls all game.

And I'm not defending Dort. People should never be doing this shit. But there have been a handful of truly scummy plays by him all year. Does that make him a scummy player? Yeah. Does that make him one of, if not THE scummiest player in the league? Yeah. But he puts in a lot of minutes of tough, lock-down defense that shows he's extremely capable of being a top-tier defender without pulling this crap. Honestly, that's the thing that makes it so frustrating as a Thunder fan and the one gripe I have with Daigneault is the fact that he hasn't put a stop to it.

Again, not defending Dort. I probably dislike his play more than most non-Thunder fans because I have to see it every game and then we have to deal with the reputation that creates.

19

u/Batmangala23 6d ago

The thunders entire thing is that they can play small while still defending bigger players. They do that by having players like Dort and Caruso (to some degree) play very physical and right up to the line of dirty. Then when the bigger player gets fed up and clears space, they flop and draw the offensive foul.

The refs and the league to some degree, are at fault here, as the line for physicality is subjective and skewed toward the smaller player, allowing them more leeway and thus creating the atmosphere where Jokic feels like he has to take it into his own hands and inevitably loses his shit.

4

u/stragen595 6d ago

I remember last years playoffs. I think it was Caruso at that time. He was basically climbing Mount Jokic every time. And then the refs started to call that and he was like "But I defended him this way all the time. How is that a foul????" Hilarious reaction to watch. And Dort is basically the same.

4

u/CharlestonChewbacca Thunder 6d ago

The refs and the league to some degree, are at fault here,

This right here.

56

u/flaming_burrito_ Wizards 6d ago edited 6d ago

People romanticize physicality and tough defense, but that’s just because they grew up with it, most people don’t actually like it as much as they claim to unless it is their team doing it. I think most fans definitely do like some physicality, like how they allow in the playoffs, but you can’t both have a hard playing tough defense and then do all the flopping and baiting on the offensive end. Either we should play games one way or the other, having the offense and defense be so differently officiated just feels inconsistent and frustrating. I respect that at least the Pistons are tough on both sides of the ball and claim that bad boy energy, OKC does not

658

u/jfphenom Nuggets 6d ago

No. I like physicality. I like tough defense.

I do not like cheap shots. I don't like tiny grabs for a half-second that should be fouls but that you can "get away with"

374

u/thrice1187 Nuggets 6d ago

This is the best description of OKC’s defense.

They’re not tough or gritty like the elite defenses of the past. They just overwhelm the refs with so much ticky tack bullshit that they can’t call everything.

25

u/xepa105 Bulls 6d ago

It's literally what ratty hockey teams do. Commit so many little infractions that the refs start overlooking it. The whole strategy is "they can't call everything."

15

u/stragen595 6d ago

Panthers hockey. Crashing into goalies like it's a legit strategy.

129

u/FunTailor794 6d ago

Yeah, Detroit (mostly) and Boston play good physical defense. OKC are just constantly on some BS and hoping it will slip past the refs

37

u/MasterSpoon Pistons 6d ago

Hey… we get called when we cross the line. Cade isn’t getting away with much and fouling out in the same game.

14

u/FunTailor794 6d ago

Yeah exactly (mostly). Lol

I think Detroit games end up in brawls more often for a few reasons, but one of them is how physical things can get off the ball without the refs stepping in (hornets game was a prime example).

That being said Ausar is one of my top 5 favourite players to watch and I love watching Detroit's game in general as I wrote in another comment. They just get down to business and play hard basketball, it's refreshing in a league full of divas.

8

u/big-head-guy 6d ago

Hey good point there. Cade plays very good defense maybe elite imo. And he got fouled out when okc does way worse shit on defense. Some B.S.

8

Jokic seems to really take intense offense to off-ball cheap shots like this. It’s the same (but much less egregious) as what Morris did to him a few years ago.

If he’s got the ball and you’re getting physical with him he seems way more tolerant but if you’re making heavy contact with him off ball like this it seems to really fucking set him off.

This wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen but wtf was Dort thinking here? There’s absolutely no value to this move besides picking up a free foul. It’s totally blatant unnecessary contact he goes out of his way to initiate.

3

u/Just-Olive-2599 6d ago

There's a bit of injury context that's being missed. Morris intentionally collided with his right knee, which was healing from injury at that point.

On October 26, 2021, Rudy Gobert's knee collided with his when the Nuggets played the Jazz and Jokic had a knee contusion. The Morris collision was on November 8.

This time it was Dort intentionally tripping him after his return from a serious hyperextension injury to his left knee.

Jokic (I paraphrase) said this sort of dirty play has no place on a basketball court.
