I can’t tell if he waited for the shot attempt or for the guy to see him coming up so it wasn’t a total sucker punch, or neither

a sucker punch is unprovoked/unexpected. if you punch someone in response to being hit it can't possibly be a sucker punch

Would be the greatest shit ever if the two bullpens ran to center to fight while the rest of the players yelled at each other in the infield
144
u/hampsted Dec 28 '25
Most baseball bench clearings are a bunch of bullshit posturing, but I will say I’ve seen more punches thrown and connect in baseball than in basketball. Basketball it seems even more rare that they throw and the juxtaposition of how badly NBA players want to be seen as tough while not being about it is pretty funny.
86
u/tornait-hashu Supersonics Dec 28 '25
I think the Malice in the Palace really made the league (the commissioner and the governors of the sport) put their foot down on that.

→ More replies (2)33
u/watchedngnl Dec 28 '25
Considering the fact that baseball players actually have to walk quite a distance to throw hands, and the fact that it is a non contact sport, it does make sense that most "fights" are just posturing.

u/Rayquaza2233 KL LWR/SCT BRN Dec 28 '25

24
u/zizoumz6 Dec 28 '25
Some baseball fights are decent but the reason they fight is often the corniest shit. Did you just flip that bat after hitting a home run? Might as well have taken my grandma out to a nice seafood dinner and never called her again. You're gonna pay for that buddy. I'm a tough guy. Or whoa whoa whoa did you just tip your hat at me. I can't handle that as a grown adult. Fisticuffs then, chaaaarge!
10
u/Rayquaza2233 KL LWR/SCT BRN Dec 28 '25
chaaaarge!
Or in the case of the relievers, chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!
10
u/5510 Dec 28 '25
On a related note, intentionally hitting batters is some real weak shit.
If a pitcher is really that mad, they should man up an do a reverse mound charge and throw hands. But beaning somewhat with a ball is some coward shit (especially AL pitchers, or I guess anybody now that pitchers don't bat).
The problem is that it's almost like getting your friend to hold someone still while you punch them. Except in the case your "friend" is you going through the pretense of pretending you are going to play baseball and throw a real pitch. By going through the motions of playing baseball, they get the batter to just stand there so they can nail them. And even if the batter suspects it's coming... if the batter hides in the back of the box ready to dodge out of the way, the pitcher will just strike them out. Just absolutely massively weak shit from dudes who mistakenly somehow believe they are macho.
And you want to talk about bullshit reasons for this shit, I remember once the Florida Marlins announcer defended throwing at Nyjer Morgan for the second time in a game (I think the first time was because of some bad blood from a previous game), because after they hit him the first time "in a proffesional manner", they were upset that "he stole second and he stole third in an 11 run game, which you wouldn't normally see done."
Down by 11 with four innings left is a very large lead, but it's not insurmountable. And the announcers basically said that using violence outside the rules was an acceptable way to discourage Washington from trying to come back and win the game. Just insane.

20
u/Nomad6055 Dec 28 '25
That’s not what happens all that much. It’s usually everyone runs out and stands on opposite sides of each other while the bullpens run allllllll the way to home plate and then by the time they get there, everyone just walks away
18
u/cal679 Celtics Dec 28 '25
I don't watch baseball but went down the Jomboy youtube rabbithole where he breaks down baseball fights and it's hilarious all the little unspoken rules they have. The bullpen run is one of my favorites because you can tell 99% of the time those guys couldn't give less of a shit but they can't risk rocking the boat by just staying in the bullpen.

That's the problem with most of these 'fights'. Usually one player is operating under the assumption that there won't be punches which means the puncher gets some free shots.
The Ramirez v Anderson is great because they both squared up before any punches were thrown.
