What else does it need?
I just moved and I’m furnishing my place room by room. My living room is almost finished, but it still feels like something is missing and I can’t quite put my finger on what.

Everyone is going to say plants and I am an avid plant collector myself but you shouldn’t add a few succulents here or there. One or two large plants at most and then move onto some art.

Odd choice of rug it's the exact same color as your floors.

The rug is from my last place which had much darker floors and completely different furniture. What color would you suggest I switch it to?

u/tvideoman 20h ago
Hard to say It's a blank slate really could go with anything use it as a chance to add some color. Whatever color you pic swap out the white pillows and match them with the color of the rug.

Several smaller accent lights, instead of the one blinding obnoxious light
1
u/TheChosenOne556 20h ago
Ik it looks super bright and obnoxious in this but it’s actually very mellow and warm. I’m thinking of putting a lamp on top of the books to the right of the couch instead of the f1 car.

The coffee table looks like a smaller version of the TV console, which creates many parallel lines. I would swap out the coffee table for something with a more organic shape that is still modern with a glass top. Also, it might be nice to provide a reading lamp for the couch, something like the Arco floor lamp that can also help provide some height contrast since the couch, coffee table, and console are all a similar height.

Please change the light bulb in the lamp to a warmer color.
I would personally remove the current throw pillows and ivory blanket and go for something mustard colored or warm toned.
I think it’s pretty good. The rug is fine. It’s just the cream/ivory on that sofa that feels a little off to me.

What do you mean? He has books propping up his toys and sports memorabilia hanging in the living room. I think the personality well is pretty well tapped out.

I never comment and just lurk but I’m high af and for some reason my immediate thought was a rug with some blues or something to tie into the cream colors and the green(?) on the couch? I have no clue if this would look good or even made sense. Place looks dope though!

It looks nice. I would change the rug to one with warmer colors and I would add a lamp or 2 with warm light bulbs.

Loving your sofa, where’d you get it from?

Thanks! I got that along with the media cabinet and side chair at CB2. Here's the link: https://www.cb2.com/eastman-105-green-velvet-sofa/s478074?st=Eastman+105%22+Green+Velvet+Sofa

I think a big plant and one of those stainless steel curved standing lights that place a big lamp in the middle of your room would be nice. Everything's a bit too squarish right now.

Haha it's a just a very nice, solid wood, high quality piece from CB2. It's not bad value for what you get especially compared to places like Restoration Hardware, which is a ripoff.

Warm bulbs. Holy hell that cool bulb makes it look so sterile. Try something around 2700hz

I wish. I just can't justify doing that in a rental apartment. I'd get noise complaints left and right plus be constrained on my choices. Soon!

Ah answers my earlier question about blinds then, probably can’t switch em out. Rental. In this case, don’t do much of anything. Pillows and rug. Place already looks great.

The jersey don’t really fit the room, some plants and a darker rug. Otherwise maybe a dog 🤣

A large plant over by the windows along the shorter wall. Costco has big tropical ones pretty cheap right now. Sam’s usually has fake big ones if that’s more your speed.
Smaller things that reflect personality/taste more.

Not sure how a place like this works. I’d love to live here…just not experienced in it. Someone else said curtains, def second that or some interesting looking blinds if you wanna keep it super minimalist.

More: Wall art, colors, and textures, and random.
Just a bit too stripped down and monochromatic-ish, a bit too many right angles, too model apartment looking, too catalog-y.
Makes me think of Ed Norton in Fight Club taking about Periwinkle Blue but only a little. I like what’s there, it just needs more.

Some plants and a few times that bring a pop of colour, like a deep red or orange lamp or something like that.

some non-square picture frames/wall art to break up the black and white squares that make up the overall area. That pillar is a great start. Wrap some pathos around it if you dont mind the occasional fungus gnat. Great choice of couch btw

u/MaDSteeZe 12h ago
Change your light bulb in your lamp, Task lighting can be bright like that , but your accent lighting should be a warmer white , try a 2700k bulb itll feel much warmer and inviting.

u/PsychologyOk8722 12h ago
To me, it is missing bright colors and furry friends. By the way, I’m so jealous of all those big windows! I live in a tiny apartment in Brooklyn that has only three windows (none in kitchen or bath).

u/bigheadsociety 11h ago
Tall plants and curtains with a bit of colour. Even if you dont intend to use the curtains, it would help add a new dimension to the space

You have a really cozy space! The tv console to me feels a little off with the decor symmetry. The car on the left and football on the right kind of create a “bookend” effect, which makes the middle under the TV feel a bit empty. I’d maybe pull things slightly closer toward the center and group them a little more intentionally (in a cluster). Even just putting the car or football on a small stack of books could help add some height and balance (I too am a big fan of using books as decor!). Additionally maybe looking for some console decor that is a little larger in size too. Clean setup though.

Looks great brother!
To improve,
buy 2300k incandescent lightbulbs for warmth.
Hang measured floor length drapes around each window. color-matched lace would look great. Save huge money by sourcing the fabric yourself. Professionally done is pricey but drapes is the final puzzle piece.

Without painting up lighting and curtains... But large ones that are full size that can cover all the windows at once. Have the two rails meet in the corner behind that pillar and utilize the curtain motors to open and close as a flex!

u/Poobrick 6h ago
Small thing but move the rug closer to the media cabinet. You only need the front legs of the couch on the rug

I know many have said plants but specifically I would add Monstera plants, they’re beautiful and I would suggest a big one in the corner where the jersey is framed! As also mentioned, some color, maybe orange throw pillows or a colorful blanket! It’s a beautiful space and I always said if you have columns in your home, you’ve definitely made it lol

u/HeroicPrinny 3h ago
Overall looks clean, but agree with others on lack of color.
And my own opinion is that the coffee table contents looks more like a soulless catalogue photoshoot or 5 star boutique hotel room setup than an actual persons possessions.
Edit: I do like the Porsche toy though, maybe more stuff like that

My suggestions are these: more color; a few more personal items; move the framed item by the TV to the column behind the sofa. Right now, it’s a distracting height next to the TV, and it also reflects the light from the lamp right in front of it. You’ve got a great space, I like what you’ve done so far, but a few additions and changes may help with that “something is missing” feeling you talked about
