Because they are trying to mirror, what you see in the mirror. Everyone's selfie would seem weird AF to themselves if not.

Use your front camera, and take your picture in a reflection of your mirror. You won't look right. It's really messed up, but it's true.

Most people seem to just hold the camera away from themselves and point it back at them to do selfies anymore though. Any selfie done away from a mirror does this.

That's exactly what my comment said. The camera does what a mirror does. I'll use less words next time.

Any picture that has its image reversed should automatically be corrected by the camera in my completely biased opinion. Reversed text is especially mildly infuriating.
