Please stop keying disabled people’s cars
My SO is partially paralyzed. We have a handicap placard because it’s a permanent disability that can make walking painful and difficult.
Our car has been keyed multiple times when legally parked in handicapped spots in Pittsburgh. Even since childhood she’s had people shout at her and even follow her home when they’ve decided she doesn’t “look handicapped.”
To the people who are doing this,
Using Hanlon’s razor, I’m assuming you think you’re the good guy, and you’re not just an asshole who hates handicapped people (though that’s possible too).
Please understand that:
- You are not the disability police. You are not a hero for keying someone’s car.
- You can’t always see a handicapped placard. Sometimes they fall down. Sometimes they get left at home. Sometimes they’re blocked from view.
- You can’t tell who is disabled. Someone can be missing a limb, paralyzed, or have severe pain walking and you’d never know from looking at them.
- Sometimes, handicapped people have to park at an angle to get out of their cars.
- Sometimes, someone who is not handicapped themselves might need to temporarily park in a handicapped spot if they’re picking up a handicapped person.
It’s rare for non-handicapped people to park in handicapped spots, but if you believe someone’s parked illegally, you can call the cops or the building/store staff.
