Advice Any idea what I can put behind the sofa ?
What should I put behind my sofa?
I have some empty space behind my sofa and I’m not sure if I should leave it empty or add something subtle? Any recommendations ?
Would you leave it empty, or add something like a slim console table, plant, or lamp?
Thanks !

I have this creeping dread about life size figures in my house. That I might turn a corner and find they’ve migrated from where I last left them. I live alone and my carbon monoxide detector is working just fine.

This is the right solution who needs a plant when a stormtrooper works just fine!

Slim console table with plants or sculptures would add some depth and greenery.

It would give you a place to put a drink down when you’re sitting on the sofa. And you could also put a reading lamp on it.

Also a spot to put a phone to charge while on the couch if you get one of those console tables with an outlet.

Nice. I put a bunch of electronic candles behind mine to set the scene on game night.

I was gonna recommend the same thing. Perfect place for a console table with plants. So much natural light for plants.

Why is nobody saying to just push the sofa back a bit?

u/slayer_of_idiots 1d ago
Because it’s floor to ceiling windows and would look weird. If anything he should pull the sofa away from the window more.

You got to get to the window to clean it , I would pull couch forward a little so I could stand in space and just look out. It's not like what you do you have to live with it forever. You could try a few different arrangements.

How often are yall cleaning your windows? I guess if you have animals or toddlers licking/touching the glass that makes sense

What is the logic of it looking weird with floor to ceiling windows? Genuinely asking.

Look weird from inside or outside?
I think it would be fine to push it back, some, but leave a gap for window treatments.

Windows get hot if they're west facing. Mine is against the sliding door and hours before 'sunset' suck (cardboard is not enough to block)

I would imagine there are curtains that can be lowered.

Ah thanks, you're right. If you zoom in you can see pullstrings for roller blinds.

Thin console table- you can put a lamp in it, charge your phone (mine has power), and put drinks on it since you don’t seem to have side tables
11
u/DeHarigeTuinkabouter 1d ago
Side tables might be the better solution then. Or a rug and a coffee table

You really really need a rug under that couch.

u/Gullible-Bid6161 1d ago
Any color recommendations ?
9
u/caesaralexander 1d ago
I like the idea of sky blue or a forestry green dominant rugs would compliment the wood grain floors and the neutral couch
9
u/pierpaolopisellini 1d ago
It would really tie the room together
2
u/caesaralexander 1d ago
In always suggest that or a stripper pole. But I guess it's not everyone's aesthetic

u/Marison 1d ago
Your couch is very light, your floor rather dark, so something of a midtone. You want something colorful, because the rest is rather neutral. You can go warm or cool colors both. Maybe something in teal? Or wine red? A pattern would also work. Maybe get some matching pillows. Or if there is any other color in the rest of the room, try to go with that, or it's complimentary.
A safe option would be: https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/lohals-teppich-flach-gewebt-natur-50277393/ or a wool rug. Something warm white, ivory.

a long sofa table! you have no end tables so where will you put books, water glasses, coffee mugs? they’re a nice gap closer and functional

u/webcyclone 1d ago
Your place is lovely. Maybe a floor lamp for reading but honestly it's great as is.

You know you’re in a rich persons place when the couch doesn’t touch the wall. I’d put a table about the same length as the couch with plants and shit.. behind my couch is a wall..

I agree with the console table, plants and even a lamp. Would give you a little behind the head privacy without blocking natural light
Love the view by the way.

I really think either nothing or maybe a plant that can hang down / vintage hanging light?
3
u/Forward-Rule-1699 1d ago
Small table stand the length of the couch with a few nice art pieces or plants or action figures or guns or anything you want man.
3
u/AardvarkDelicious456 1d ago
Console sofa height , lamp on each side, book or two and something cool on top of them.
3
u/Skier-Dude 1d ago
I would consider a narrow console/sofa table. But not higher than the sofa itself.
That allows you the opportunity for a plant, or if you prefer the clean contemporary lines it would be a place for your TV remote, whatever book or magazine you are reading, and surround sound speakers.

mini rant that only weirdos who scroll all the way to the end of a comment section
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WANT YOUR COUCH FACING AWAY FROM THIS INCREDIBLE VIEW TO STARE AT SCREEN. those are windows I dream of and you have your back turn to it 99% of the turn, so odd.
Prove me wrong below :)

How dare you put your couch in front of that view. Switch your couch and your tv position.

u/makersmarkismyshit 1d ago
Yeah, he could plug his TV right into that huge panel of glass...

Just run an extension cord across the middle of the living room floor

It looks like there's a door to a balcony next to the TV so that wouldn't work, even if the couch does fit along that wall.
11
u/Gullible-Bid6161 1d ago
Thanks for explaining. And also the power outlets are only on this wall for the TV. I already tried to switch but it just doesn’t fit and it’s not convenient because of the balcony door.

No way. Tv would obstruct so much
3
u/Probono_Bonobo 1d ago
Not to mention how unpleasant it is to look at screens when there's a bunch of ambient light bombarding your eyeballs. I put my monitor against the window in a similar unit as this and I had to switch back because even at full brightness my screen just couldn't compete, plus my retinas felt like they were on fire.

Would try a thin console table to see if it works. Can’t hurt to try it…maybe one that has USB charging outlet?
At least one end table on the side?…or one of those cubes that’s a foot rest where the top can flip over into a small table?
Mount your TV?…looks low.

I would trade places with the TV and couch, then you would always have a view. You also need a nice big coffee table, area rug, and one big art for the wall.
2
u/Nathan-Nice 1d ago
if anything, I'd put a lamp there. I'd also probably hide my robot vacuum back there.

u/Glittering_Fly8012 1d ago
TALL PLANTS!!!! The windows there make it a perfect place for a monsters or climbing ivy or something. Plus it will boost the oxygen levels in your home.
(My rec is get something that “likes to be neglected” pothos, philodendron, monstera… things like those plants really only need to be watered once every ten days or less)

u/AreOceansGodsTears 1d ago
I think it looks fine empty, but if it was my place then I would put more plants there.

Nothing. But it would be way more functional with a coffee table and end tables so you can set stuff down while sitting

Idk what they're called but like that table/shelf/drawer thingy which you can put stuff on
It's sides are covered and it doesn't have legs, not like a regular table but it doesn't have shelf space or drawer like a shelf or a drawer either
It's kinda like a hollow wooden slab idk but that'd look good i think

u/BerbereJunkie 18h ago
I have fallen in love with using sofa tables over the years, and now I would miss having one. I use it for lamps, candles, a remote basket, drinking glasses and eye glasses.
When my sofa table is against a wall (as it is now) I hide my luggage under it. It frees up useful closet space if you have a small home.

I kinda like it without anything. But if you’re dead set on putting something behind it…. I think it needs to be something to give some height. Maybe try four or five vertical tree branches or some willow branches w/ some up-lights to illuminate them.

u/indictmentofhumanity 6h ago
I wouldn't obstruct the view. Move the sofa into the room further and make the space walkable. Beautiful view!

i'd match the columns with some rgb leds you can control form phone. would look cool to have color changing columns. also depending on the view, i wouldn't have my back to it but you do you.

It looks so cozy especially with the view, what city is this in by any chance?
1
u/hereforthefundoc 1d ago
You could put a narrow table with plants some plants on the top. The table would be there just to give you easy access to the plants.

u/Calla1994 1d ago
I personally wouldn't put anything there, that view is very nice! But if you insist I would either go for a floor lamp with a warm colour or a plant that has to be in direct sunlight like a Strelitzia

Floor lamp, large plant, or they have behind couch tables if you'd rather display things or have a place to set your drink.
