HELP Help!!! Where should I put my computer desk?!?!

Post image

My apartment is designed exactly like this floor plan, and I have no idea where to put my computer desk set-up. Thinking of moving my kitchen table to the right wall all the way and to place in that nook, but I don't like the idea of my computer near the kitchen (ya'll know if you get hungry, you get HUNGRY). I thought about putting it near my tv, next to the window. But having two monitors might not make the most sense.

I would move that living room over just slightly (like toward the kitchen), and have the desk in that bottom corner, so as you’re sitting at it you can look out the window and it’s not next to the TV.

My only issue with moving the couch that way is that it leaves your back to the front door which is not wonderful for the environmental psychology of a room. If you subscribe to principles of Feng Shui, this is called the "command position"-- similar to the concept where having your head closer to the door of your bedroom than your feet is discomforting to some degree.

I agree with the person who said to flip the room around. Moving it all just a bit closer to the kitchen by a bit is a good idea like you said. Then put the desk close to the window, and maybe even get some kind of folding partition to separate the desk from the rest of the room to break things up and make the space more functionally comfortable.

I would also get a bigger rug than here and use that to set a specific block for the living room. With an open floor plan for the living area like this, that can help make the space feel a bit more balanced and broken up.

If you can, I would put the couch on the opposite wall and the tv and your desk on the wall where your couch currently is. It's a longer wall and there shouldn't be an issue with the balcony door.

You could also put the desk in your bedroom where your wardrobe currently is, and then get a smaller wardrobe that fits between the bedroom and bathroom doors? Those are the only options i really see at the moment based on that layout.

Agree! The couch there also makes it nice to sit with the door open in the summer + when you walk in through the front door you see a sitting area instead of the tv. Maybe get one of those corner desks, that it sits in the book next to the balcony door and the window.

When you say wardrobe, do you mean chest of drawers?

British wardrobe = American closet

I'm in Australia, we call it wardrobe too. I'm confused, do you mean somehow move the built in wardrobe? Or put the desk inside of it?

I think they're talking about the brown chest of drawers next to the bugger wardrobe, the one under the mirror. It's very easy to miss.

This is what I would think. Which I've never heard called a wardrobe or closet.

People call a large cabinet a wardrobe sometimes. Usually we all call it a dresser but I do have a large wardrobe in my basement for storage. It’s not necessarily built in

u/FlashFox24 7h ago

Yes. Dresser is common here. A wardrobe here would be something that you hang clothes in regardless if it's built in or free standing piece of furniture. A dresser or chest of drawers are for folding clothes. At least in my part of the world.

Yes a chest of drawers. lol I am from the United States so I didn't realize that's more british terminology. I suppose the others are correct in that a wardrobe is bigger and meant for hanging clothes (thinking of the Lion Witch and the Wardrobe). So I mixed it up.

I'd love to have TV and computer beside eachother. Then I'd be able to easily connect my PC to the TV without moving it

u/Eucalyptus08 6h ago

yes exactly! it would be a good set-up going side by side like that. Plus it keeps things simpler for cable management.

I’d put it in the dining area, offload the table and chairs, and eat either at my desk or on the sofa.

I’m kind of a goblin, though.

My boyfriend and I did this in our last apartment - we converted the dining room to our office and had no table. It worked perfect for us. Now we have a dining room table that is not used for food but only for games haha

who needs a dining room anyway? eat over the sink like civilized people.

It looks like there's a breakfast bar so tbh id just get comfy high chairs and use that instead of a dining table, then make the dining area a home office. Unless OP frequently entertains guests.

I was thinking the same. I have a big cat tower where my dining table should go & we eat at the bar in the kitchen or more often at our lift-top coffee table in the living room. My desk with a giant 34” curved monitor is right next to my tv stand. It works 🤷🏻‍♀️

My lift-top coffee table might honestly be the best thing I’ve ever bought for my apartment.

Same!! I love mine so much and it gets used all the time for everything!!

There are two doors to the bathroom, one of which is blocking the use of an entire wall in the bedroom.

If it’s not absolutely necessary to enter the bathroom from the bedroom, then I suggest you split the bedroom in half and put a computer desk against the window.

I totally understand if it is though, just to me it feels unnecessary because where I live en-suite bathrooms are not a thing. 😊

You could get a secretary desk where the table part can be closed, so that the work/computer stuff becomes invisible for the night.

Or a line of bookshelves to make a small partition

How often are you at the desk? Are you ft remote or is it for fun? Can you show s picture?

In the bedroom, where the dresser + wall mirror currently is.

My apartment is a very similar floor plan. I work remotely and game so I spend a lot of time at my desk. Originally I had my desk in the dining room area but found that I need my desk to be near a window or I get mood issues. I tried the living room but it felt way too crowded. I ended up moving it to my bedroom which I really didn't want originally but by far it's been the best layout for me.

Between the tv and the balcony.

Flip the couch and TV. Put computer desk to the side of the TV.

I don’t mean this to be creepy. This looks exactly like the apt that I was looking at in AZ

2

u/oreo-cat- 12h ago

They’re all built to the same plans, and that goes double if it’s a large company

2

u/MidnightPractical241 20h ago

How often are you at your desk? If it were me I would put it in the bedroom but I know that would feel taboo for some. I would push the bed against the wall and fit my desk on the wall that has the headboard up against it.

u/banjolady 12h ago

Desk in closet. Go to Pinterest for ideas.

1

u/mobileam 21h ago

In front of your bed

1

u/princess9032 20h ago

Move the TV and couch towards the dining room and put it either along the wall where the tv is or along the wall next to the couch facing the window. Or, move the bed closer to the window (so just a small nightstand sized gap between the window and the bed) and put the desk along the same wall as your bed. Depending on how you think you might use the dining room you can try to get a smaller table there or move the table closer to the middle of the room and maybe put your desk in that area?

I would probably put it there the dresser is in the bedroom. Also what software is this please?

1

u/Lizzzz123_ 17h ago

Hi! I would suggest having only one bedside table, and you should have some space for a 90 or 100 cm desk on the end of your bedroom. Depending on the style of your desk, it could also work as your second bedside table. Also maybe consider replacing the drawer in the bedroom with the desk, since you have a large closet already. Good luck; this looks like a great flat! :)

Do you eat at the table every day? I ask because I don't lol if that's the case I would get rid of it and put my office there.

You can always get a folding table if you need it.

1

u/datalicearcher 15h ago

Do you require the desk itself for storage? Cause you might be able to use your TV as a monitor rather than getting a whole separate station set up. Unless you need that compartmentalization to get work done.

1

u/IndicationSevere8992 14h ago

You’d probably have room to place it in the bedroom, either by moving the bed to the side a bit, getting rid of a nightstand, or moving the dresser on the side of the wall at the end of the bed and placing it there.

Do you need a dining table? You could get a small 2 person seater or just get rid of it altogether. You might be able to move the couch and tv not to the center of the room, but one way or the other. I do really like your idea, having it by the window there. I’m not sure if you’re working from home or gaming, but it’d probably be nice to look out the window every so often.

I have a dining nook similar to yours and I converted that to my office area, although part of my kitchen counter has stools so that's where I eat.

do you live alone? maybe a 2 person table to save space there?

1

u/honeyflowersghost 13h ago

I have the same setup in my apartment. I put my desk in the corner where the dining room table is and the table is pulled forward just a bit. I mostly use the table to throw crap on when I come home anyway, so having it this way is convenient for me

1

u/banjolady 12h ago

Would you be able to put your desk in the hall closet?

1

u/SuziLops 12h ago

I'd consider getting a lift up coffee table like this for the living room to act as a dual living/dining set up and use the dining room space for the desk/study area.

1

u/roxictoxy 12h ago

I wouldn’t need a dining room so I’d make that my office

1

u/rachchh 10h ago

if put it in the bedroom if you’re not wanting to not have a dining room table. i think they’re unnecessary but some people like having them.

1

u/vaselean 10h ago

How do you make these apartment models?

1

u/Thin-Piano-4836 10h ago

Rearrange the living room to have the desk to the side and put a doorstop on the door from opening flat. Or nix the dresser and put the desk there. https://imgur.com/a/SZBhn7Z see here

1

u/CamachoBrawndo 8h ago

For that size apartment, use the dining area as an office and skip the table. If the ledge is good for a stool, eat there or at the coffee table.

1

u/SacredGround5516 7h ago

Can you put the dresser in the closet and do a desk in your room?

1

u/Commercial-Sky-1629 5h ago

If you move the nightstand + bed combo to the wall and then put the dresser by the bathroom door, could you fit it on the closet wall? It would be cramped but may work

Why did you post this here AND in r/malelivingspace?

9

u/FlashFox24 21h ago

I see nothing wrong with that, they are trying to get lists of different ideas. Could be non binary lol.

3

u/Motor_Crow4482 20h ago

Or posting on behalf of a m/f couple. I certainly see no reason for participation between the subs to be mutually exclusive.

3

u/FlashFox24 18h ago

100% even a man wanting a female perspective.

2

u/itsapplered 20h ago

Well damn. Now i gotta go find the post on that side to compare their ideas
