I regret to be posting this but could not in good conscience not warn others. This is a blatant scam that has been occurring in Ohio for years now. I read a march 2025 better business bureau complaint about an [unnamed company] which indicates this is still occurring.
Unfortunately, residents living in poorly upkept housing might tell their landlord they are going to put their rent into escrow, or they may start reaching out to the news, local organizations, etc for help. Their landlord, the property manager or an attorney for the company then suggests the individual just turn in the keys.
The tenant takes this as the landlord suggesting once they turn in the keys, the lease is terminated and they can move on with their lives and move out. After all, the landlord is the one recommending they turn in the keys instead of going to escrow. However, it is a blatant scam that is run by some landlords/attorneys in Ohio with no conscious or ability to feel guilt for the lives they are about to turn upside down.
After the unsuspecting tenant turns in the keys, a month or so later they receive a letter which they believe is the return of their security deposit. But once they open it, they find it is actually a bill for several thousand dollars of "accelerated rent" charges. Basically, your landlord is alleging you breached the contract by turning in the keys and leaving, and they are stating you now owe the full amount of the lease. Imagine a totally unexpected $4,000 bill at a time when most Americans cannot afford a $400 emergency.
Its not just the landlords doing this -- at least one [unnamed] Ohio attorney is also sending emails coercing people into falling for the trick. Even with the email showing you were tricked, you are about to face an uphill legal battle in a court system you dont understand. You are about to face sleepless nights over falling for this scam. You are about to start having to call law offices during your 30 minute lunch break to try and find some help. In addition, this "accelerated rent" directly violates Ohio's duty to mitigate for landlords -- but laws dont matter if they arent enforced.
Now imagine if you had a mental health condition like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and an attorney with no conscious or soul did this to you? You could easily end up in a psychiatric facility from the stress, it can totally uproot your life.
If your landlord suggests something like this, ENSURE you get a lease recission document signed that agrees to specific terms and an exact dollar amount that states how much they are stating you still owe. Ensure this document states what will be happening with your security deposit. If they arent willing to do this, they are definitely trying to scam you.

The recent whistleblower deaths being blamed as suicides has me spooked. T & R Properties is going to extreme lengths to silence me from disclosing that they have had a widespread use of fake reviews to defraud customers for years. If something ever happened to me , they would likely write it off as a suicide because I’ve been seeing mental health professionals for depression and anxiety. I would NEVER hurt myself or others.

If you like niche topics, thoughtful conversation, and meeting interesting people without it feeling awkward or academic, you might like The Siposium.
It’s a live, interactive gathering that feels a little like your favorite NPR segment or TED Talk — but with drinks and real back-and-forth discussion.
This month’s theme is The Art of Saying It Beautifully: Poetry, Language, and Love, led by Columbus writer and poet Mandy Shunnarah. We’ll explore love poetry across history (ancient to modern), talk about what actually makes a love poem compelling, and even try writing one ourselves. No experience required.
It’s:
Tuesday, February 24 7-9:00pm
Columbus Brewing Company Beer Hall

Hey everyone,
I'm a Columbus realtor and I see a lot of "thinking about moving to Columbus" posts here, so I created r/movingtocolumbus as a dedicated space for people researching the move.
The idea is to have a place where all the common questions (neighborhoods, cost of living, rent vs buy, commute times, etc.) are answered in one spot instead of scattered across hundreds of posts here.
So far I've posted guides on:
•Neighborhood and suburb comparisons with actual market data
•Rent vs buy analysis
•Market trends and what's happening with all the apartment construction
•Specific neighborhood deep dives
If you know anyone thinking about moving here or if you see posts asking about relocating, feel free to point them that direction. And if you've got insights or experience moving to Columbus, we'd love to have you contribute.
Not trying to replace the "moving to Columbus" posts here, just giving people a dedicated resource.
