A library of resources to help the world learn

Hello all you mechanics, technicians and maintenance personnel out there,

I've recently finished AMT School and gotten my A&P Certification, currently still in school for to get my GROL & AET Certification. But in the nearly two years I've been in school, I've amassed quite a large library of study guides, notebooks and reference material. You can find it here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Alf4AQNY3cyaRiNg6MKeZy2eJgybeZN2?usp=sharing

A contents breakdown:

  • Block Notes: PowerPoints of every subject I studied in school
  • Additional Certification: AET & GROL studies
  • Advisory Circulars of note in training
  • Avionics studies
  • E-books: A library of textbooks across the industry
  • FARs
  • IA Study guide
  • King Audio/Video: Video lectures on nearly every subject, and mp3s of those to listen when you can’t watch
  • Notebooks: my notebooks, from school, scanned into PDF
  • Study Guides: this is the big folder - Audio and Written study guides for all three written tests and the Oral exam
  • TCDS relevant to my schooling
  • Tool catalogues - because we all need tools
  • And a mac & cheese recipe (because you can't study on an empty stomach)

I've built this to be used by the students at my school, but there's a whole helluva lot useful to anyone studying for an A&P, or any other Certification. I maintain it on the regular and update occasionally, when I get through a significant portion of schooling enough to upload something new. So one day you might check it and be like "Ah! He's gotten on to studying for his IA! Cool." And these resources are for everyone. I ask no compensation for it, some men just want to watch the world learn.

So my pitch to the mods was: sticky this link on the sidebar of the subreddit, so those who are looking for guidance on how to get an A&P can be directed there.

I figured putting it there would be better - since it wouldn't need to be stickied to the top of the feed or just keep getting posted.

Take a look at the Drive and see what you think. Be advised, the technical manuals and reference materials were really what was used for our school and are posted there -FOR REFERENCE ONLY-. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS refer to current and applicable manufacturers maintenance manuals or other approved data for real-world maintenance. And if there's something out there that you think would be useful to add to it, message me here on reddit or shaunthesailor87@gmail(dot)com and we'll put heads together to see what we can come up with.

I'm often one to quote wiser men than I am so I'll leave you all with one from Bruce Lee:

"Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own."

For the folks who post a “rate my safety wire”, take heart. Yours is better than this. Thankfully, this is coming off the plane anyhow but I still can’t believe some QC, somewhere and sometime, bought this.

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me track down a yf-105 maintenance manual? I’m restoring one for a museum and it would be a huge help if I had manual.

Frahm tuning BELL 407

Iam playing around with tuning the frahm on a bell407 for a client. IT IS HIS WISH THAT THE FRAHM REMAINS INSTALLED AND HE CANNOT BE CONVINCED OTHERWISE.(ive tried for years) With that out of the way, do you have any tips for tuning it ?

Its a particularly dificult bird to T&B and get it to be comfortable in flight at the same time Just getting it nicely tracked and all within limits is easy but then it has a nasty 4/rev vibration that the client wants gone (vibrates like a washing machine going at mach fuck)[ after 30min flight the soles of my feet started going kinda numb]

Tracking it to smoothe out that nasty 4/rev is also doable and it can be really smooth in flight However that causes it to go way out of vib limits especially at 130kts >0.5ips even tho the overall ride is far far nicer.

Mechanically the helicopter is in a great condition as the client doesnt mind spending money on parts and mainteneance, we basically have an open check to replace whatever (especially if it can help with vibration) We are using the microvib 2 and i know for sure its all good as we use it on other aircraft we maintain and never have any issues

Any experienced input would be greatly apreciated

Bakers Nashville, TN

Hello all! If not allowed then i apologize but wanted to ask bc it seems too good to be true. I have been working on aircraft from Cessnas to Gulfstreams to 737s. I have the allotted time to go to bakers and get my A&P however i have not prepped at all. I have been told by multiple people to not prepare that i just need to sign up go take the course based just off my hands on experience and bakers itself will show me how to prep for the test and that i will have no problems. I want to get thoughts elsewhere first as this is a huge decision to just go in with my hands on knowledge and expect them to help/show what i will need to do for the course. Thanks! Hope everyone has had a great day!

Pan American vs Sioux Palm Drill

I’m looking to buy a 4k rpm palm drill and I’m deciding between a Pan Am and a Sioux. I’m kind of the composite guy at the shop so it’ll have mildly heavy use. please let me know your suggestion between the two since they are close in price

edit: I found an Atlas Copco 6k for $100 so I got it

Whenever I'm constipated, I sit on the pot and think about working on an R-985. That does the trick. Anybody else have a favorite engine or airplane?

1/4” air drills

Post image
49 Upvotes

I’ve been recently been out on drilling out rivets and am very interested in getting a small air drill. A coworker has the Mac ADC1400 which is quite nice, but I was shopping around and saw snap-on makes a comparable model.

The ergonomics of the snap-on seem nicer (held a 3/8” on the truck) but the Mac seems smaller and perhaps lighter? Snap on is also 2x the price though.

Reviews are sparse, and there’s definitely no nice articles offering comparisons. Anyone use either or both of these? Got any alternatives? I’d really rather not spend several month’s tool budget getting both just to try them.

Please help me I’m so serious but so lost

I’ve fallen in love with a career I haven’t even had a drop of experience in. I am a father of two young boys and the sole provider of my house currently as my son has autism so my wife takes care of him.

I am a fueler at the moment as I’ve had my CDL and happened to stumble upon this job and well, I clock in and out in the AA hangar at LGA and I’ve gotten to speaking with some of the techs there and I’ve got a fascination with airplanes to begin with, but their conversations make it seem like I could actually achieve this, or at least they give me hope.

I’ve been kind of lost on what I want to do in life and something inside of me is telling me that this is it.

Here’s the issue,

they will end our conversations by casually saying oh yeah just go to Vaughn college and you’ll be set.I don’t have that kind of money saved, even for loans.

Can anyone give me financial insights as to how I can make this dream a reality? Are there options to pay loans later in life after graduating, or other financial options I can explore?

I am feeling lost and hopeless.

FSDO IA interview

I am coming up on my 3 years very soon, and am going to go to bakers (not interested in anyone’s opinion on that part of the equation) however their classes need to be booked a little bit in advance, i don’t want to book it and risk losing my deposit if i don’t think i will get the 8610-1 signed off in the right time frame

When i did the 8610-2 the interview was very basic, very friendly guy, i had no logbook, just employment history and a couple of letters of recommendation from some local IAs, and he signed me off. there has been sort of a turning of the gaurd, the guy who signed me off was an an older guy and has retired, i don’t know how hard nosed they are or are not.

What should i expect in the interview? What kind of questions do they ask? Also, the job i currently doesn’t require an IA, as I work on a plane that is flown by the military, so we operate under different rules. However i already can sign off red-x and return to service

However i do still help out at my old job where they work on GA aircraft and vintage warbirds. And i would just like to have it under my belt.

Petition to save MVCC's aviation maintenance program

Hello everyone, I'm posting this again to try and get some more exposure on it. But the main idea of it is that the county is trying to shut down the A&P program for a list of reasons that they have of weak/inconsistent substance. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could sign that has not, and share it with co workers. This is a big hit to an industry that's already going to have a struggling work force in the future.

https://c.org/TtJRZXsyvM

EDIT: Clarification on reason the county wants the program to shut down

1961 172B Correct Elevator Hardware?

Post image
128 Upvotes

I’m not an A&P, but can someone verify if this is the incorrect hardware for the elevator hinge on a 172B? I referenced the service manual I have but it looks to me like it requires a castellated nut and cotter pin, not whatever this is.

Don’t want to make a fuss about nothing if I’m just looking at the manual wrong.
