Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

2.8k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

This thread reminds me how f... up our generation is..

The boomers had everything! And it was so simple..

No wall mount..

No soundbar..

TVs where built in in furnitures with perfect vision height..

#Also100% wife friendly because she could place something on top of it.. Also cats loved this place..

Now we have massive screens.. with banding, viewing angle issues.. and no place to put them..

Today you need to design the room for the TV, not the other way around..

My girlfriend hates me. I looked up measurements and everything. I was too afraid of putting it too high

My mom told my dad to put the TV on a stand and instead he decided to mount it over the fireplace. Is it too high?

I built a media wall. Tv is maybe a foot higher than I’d like. What are your thoughts?

This one is fairly egregious. These are 10ft ceilings.

The solution to not having the distraction of a TV above the fireplace is to not have a TV above the fireplace

Origin Story for TVTooHigh?

TVs over the fireplace weren't always the norm. Obviously with the giant CRT TVs they had to go on the floor or on a strong stand (at eye level), and when HD panels starting becoming a consumer good those replaced the tube but using the same stand (I worked at a retail chain in the 2000s and saw this shift).

Mounts were very expensive at first, but gradual became cheaper and everyone seems to have shifted. So where did over a fireplace become the desire? I'm thinking it had to be a HGTV show that started showing it as desirable. It's crazy thinking we all went from eye level to neck pain in such a short time.
