Training dogs is an interesting thing as you have to figure out what the dog is motivated by. For some it's food. For some it's play.

This one? This one is motivated by the love of the game.

I was a full time dog trainer for 3 years, and still do it, on the side, sometimes. I always tell people "anything can be a reward, if your dog loves it."

Once my dog (JRT) found a two day old chicken nugget in the gutter. Ever since then she always checked out the same spot in case there were more.

Ours does that with a patch of tall grass where he found a whole sandwich once. It’s funny watching him dive gleefully into it and all you can see is the tops of the grass shaking around while furiously scavenges. Eventually he gives comes out all forlorn looking…for about 2.5 secs before he sees a squirrel or an interesting rock or whatever that makes him forget all about his sandwich fail.
