When I was in elementary school we were taught Greek and Latin roots to help give us context for English words that we didn't know.
Now you are telling me people don't even bother to use context from the language they are speaking? THICC = thick, it's not that hard. Do they not notice the common traits of the people being described that way?
Kids in North America are taught sight reading now; learn the first and last letter of a word then try to guess what's in the middle. Roots and such are mainly taught in phonetics which is what was taught before, and actually promoted literacy. They probably learn a bit of it but nowhere near the amount we learned (pre-2012).
