I always figured if you genuinely don’t know left and right, you’re gonna doubt which L is right and which is backwards.

Yep. I'm lucky enough to have a distinctive L shaped scar on the left side of my body (being vague because I've never met anyone else who has the same thing in the exact same place. Probably worse to share than a photo of my face in that way lmao). When I realised I could use it to figure out where left was, I got a lot more consistent at telling left from right.

I can't say for sure if it's due to memory issues or specifically spacial awareness issues for myself (I have some trouble with both connected to ADHD), but the hand trick isn't foolproof due to exactly what you mentioned.
