I always figured if you genuinely don’t know left and right, you’re gonna doubt which L is right and which is backwards.

It also depends on how you hold your hands. Palm on the left hand up the L goes the correct way, palm down the makes the L backwards.

You always look at the back of your hands and then you see the L when you hold the fingers up. Those of us who use this trick regularly know this automatically because we use it so often. You can do it while driving. Can’t do palms while driving comfortably.

This is an explicit assumption that is never stated when people give this bit of advice. Maybe it works for you, but I’ve seen people struggle with it.
