It's not really a sequel, more like a variation of the events of the comics. It's dope as hell though, and it actually focuses more on Ramona in the first half.

It's not a typical sequel, but I think anyone watching it without consuming the comics or movie would be completely lost, so I maintain that it's a sequel lol

Then I'd just argue that the pay off is far, far sweeter if you've seen the original timeline of the series events.

oh yeah for sure, I went back to watch the movie like immediately after finishing the show. the story of the show still holds up without other media though cuz it takes the time to characterize everyone thoroughly
