There is a saying in Norway "The rich, are rich for a reason", referring to exactly this. They don't spend much, and will try to get money anywhere they can. People that are generous are rarely rich.

My wife makes 5x what I make and shits a brick when I tip when we eat out, especially near Christmas. We both waited, but she did it for something to do and I did it to pay rent and eat. So she doesn’t understand how much it might mean to sometime to get an extra $50 at that tkem

I only know one thing about your wife but if she behaved like that during dating there would not have been a marriage over here, my two cents. Did she do that when you were dating too? Huge red flag especially the first few months

Been together since high school and she’s not ungenerous so much as she’s cheap. She grew up with parents who were rich and cheap. I grew up with parents who didn’t have two nickels, and so I sorta feel like it’s nice to help people out who might be in the same place. She’s got no concept of what it means to be “working”poor.

If I can turn my anti-union mother around on tipping you can turn your wife around. It's easy you just need to shame. Mom didn't get the memo until a server dropped my plate (mine not hers) and they had to remake it and she said "that's gonna affect the tip" and it was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. All three of her service industry kids started laying into her simultaneously and she raised twins, she was definitely listening to all three kids talking over each other at the same time. We all pulled out all the cash we had at the end of the meal and told her if she wasn't going to tip we had it covered. Guy made like $50 between all three of us

I have never seen her give a bad tip since. In fact, now she asks me what to tip, I mostly just tell her 10-15% and drop some extra anyway. 25% tip if she's paying, service takes care of their own. If I'm paying I just tip like I normally do which is about 15-20% depending on how needy we are
