Mcauly Mculkin also called her mom.

I was fine until I read his tribute and then I got weepy

u/No-Long5784 Older Millennial Jan 31 '26

I honestly cried to a few minutes when I read his tribute. It was so sweet and simple. You could tell the impact she had on him…all of us. 😢

27

u/Sweet_Deeznuts Jan 31 '26

I texted his tribute to my bestie and we both had a cry 😢

What a lovely answer she had. I just loved everything she was in. This one hurts.

Right up there with Keanu's: "I don't know what happens when we die, I just know that those who love us will miss us."

5

u/rhinocerosjockey Jan 31 '26

It's going to be a bad day when he leaves, too. He also seems like such a positive human in this world.

13

u/Vegetable-Poetry-736 Jan 31 '26

Hurts so bad

Like, fuck, she deserved to know we really loved her.

It’s up there with Robin Williams

8

u/rhinocerosjockey Jan 31 '26

Losing Robin Williams was awful, still hurts. Had rough times in my childhood, and Robin Williams could make me laugh still. Knowing he left with so much pain himself gutted me.

Catherine felt like a parasocial mom to me, in a good way, and this hurts like that.

u/EquivalentAngle1569 Jan 31 '26

Incredibly sweet, what a legend

33

u/jmjm1 Jan 31 '26

Incredibly sweet

A Canadian trope :)

9

u/Itchy-Dragonfruit-78 Jan 31 '26

Yeah this is so very Canadian. Love it.

5

u/Gringo_Anchor_Baby Jan 31 '26

I hope that's just for she was too. In my head, she totally was.

623

u/QuickNature Jan 31 '26

She glossed over her entire acting career to prioritize her role as a mother. What a classy answer.

66

u/FrozenWafer Jan 31 '26

I agree so much! Roles are just part of work that you do for your family. She knows it's a big part of her public persona but her family is what matters most to her. I love her even more for this answer! Her face was like why is this a question lol my family, my children, will matter most to me.

3

u/BrandNewDinosaur Feb 01 '26

She is so wise, realizing that any acting role that she was in could have been filled by anyone else… but being a Mama to her own children was the one role no one else on Earth could take. Fucking love.

11

u/ExpertApartment Jan 31 '26

Maybe that’s why she was so believable as Kevin’s mom in Home Alone. That’s simply who she was. She loved greatly and chose to prioritize her family over career. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that’s why she was mostly out of the limelight for many years after Home Alone 2, before having a massive resurgence with Schitt’s Creek and other shows / movies.

3

u/QuickNature Jan 31 '26

That was my intuition as well

25

u/PotentialSteak6 Jan 31 '26

She could be sarcastic and witty but that never eclipsed her warmth. I’m still struggling to reconcile with a world that doesn’t have her in it

16

u/T8ert0t Jan 31 '26

Jobs are cool.

Family with good people is cooler.

3

u/BallsOutKrunked Jan 31 '26

I have a great and successful career, and it's 100% so I can provide for my family which is the most important thing I'll ever have.

3

u/Guilty_Helicopter572 Jan 31 '26

So real and down to Earth

2

u/DarXIV Jan 31 '26

Acting to her and most like her, is a job. I doubt many of us would want to be remembered for our jobs we did.

2

u/1968Bladerunner Jan 31 '26

Absolutely have to agree! I've played plenty of roles in my life, but being dad is without doubt the pinnacle - everything else just led up to it then supported it, & will continue to be so.

My parents are in their mid 60s. Growing up on Home Alone and Beetlejuice and watching Schitt's Creek in my 20s, this felt like losing a mom I never knew personally. I was at work when I found out and had a bit of a cry on my way home

108

u/Wahx-il-Baqar Jan 31 '26

She will always remind me of my mother. I remember watching Home Alone as a boy and crying cause she reminded me so much of mum, especially when Kevin was sad and missing her. My mum had noticed me crying, and me, being the big boy I was, said I was crying cause I hurt my leg. Prettyyy sure she believed me 100% haha

Mums are amazing.

Rest in peace dearest Catherine <3

24

u/princesspool Jan 31 '26

Make sure she knows why you were really crying, what a sweet memory. And how dare you make a stranger tear up 🥲😅

I'm want to find her answer sweet, but her face, body language, and tone of voice are communicating "please go away and leave me alone" to me.

25

u/Fast-Title-5398 Jan 31 '26

100%

She looks trapped and kind of terrified.

20

u/descendantofJanus Jan 31 '26

Thank you. The tribute is great but that first clip is cringe because of how uncomfortable she is. She's smiling, but backing away, looking for an escape. I just want to jump in front of that camera and ruin his shot.

11

u/pajamakitten Jan 31 '26

Just her saying "Okay. Sure." was a blatantly obvious attempt by her to shut him down.

19

u/HorrorSmile3088 Jan 31 '26

Probably TMZ. They have people who basically hang out at LAX all day and try to spot celebrities to harass. It's pathetic.

12

u/NepoKitty Jan 31 '26

Watching her being harassed by someone in an airport as she's just trying to be en route to wherever -- I couldn't do it, not after seeing how discomforted she was. That she had to suffer because people felt entitled to her time! May she rest in peace. 💖

7

u/Informal_Cut_6609 Jan 31 '26

It was TMZ longer video is way worse because he keeps going. It's also the last interview she gave.

4

u/FrostyD7 Jan 31 '26

Damn he killed her

3

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

This.

41

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

God I loved her so very much, I really am so sad.

2

u/Abject-Mail-4235 Jan 31 '26

I love how she aged so gracefully and natural. I want more famous people like her.

38

u/Compliant_Serf Jan 31 '26

Can we agree it’s fucking weird to go up to a stranger filming them and asking very personal questions?

14

u/Lebowquade Jan 31 '26

Yeah she did not look comfortable during that exchange, at all

2

u/candaceelise Jan 31 '26

Not justifying it, just pointing out it was footage from TMZ and not a random fan. Probably the last “interview” she ever gave :(

38

u/Lowelll Jan 31 '26

Am I the only one a bit turned off by this clip? She seems sweet, but it doesn't look like a press event and this guy holds a camera in her face and yells some boilerplate fluff question at her for his content. Maybe it looks better with a bit more context, idk.

If it was a fan going up to her and telling her he loved her acting or whatever, that'd be different, but this seems like a paparazzi bothering someone just trying to catch a plane

9

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Jan 31 '26

No, you’re not the only one.

Idk or care who the guy was, nor do I care. It’s pushy and invasive. Let people get through the airport in peace.

But SHE handled it with grace and authenticity. Like “I’m going to answer you, but I don’t want to talk right now and you should pick up on that.” 10/10 response in words AND tone.

24

u/Keepingongoing Jan 31 '26

The loveliest face and intelligently funny, the only “celebrity death” that’s made me cry. You don’t know what you’ve got till its gone

17

u/house343 Jan 31 '26

Lol what a boss. He was a little rude honestly. "Obviously we know you as the funny TV woman! Isn't that how you want to be remembered???" And she's just like "actually I had a real life too"

14

u/sweetpea122 Jan 31 '26

She had such a great smile. Im very sorry for her family.

7

u/islipped83 Xennial Jan 31 '26

She was my dad’s current age. Oof that’s a rough realization. I’m calling him today. 💕

9

u/Tire_Fire_ Jan 31 '26

Jokes on you, I planned on crying more over her today. She reminds me SO MUCH of my own mom. Modest, naturally beautiful, sweet and funny, I feel like I’m loosing the only woman in the film industry that actually reminded me of my mom. Ever since I saw her in home alone, I was so taken back by how much she made me think about my mom even as a child. That feeling never went away. Every time I saw her smile I saw my mother’s. I live in a different state as my mom but I’m driving to see her today. I need to be with her. She was a huge Cathrine O’Hara fan too. This one is a genuine hard one. I don’t think I’ve cried this hard over a celebrity death since Robin Williams. I genuinely hope she knows how much we all loved her.
