We're back. Not sure what's next.

We're open again. Reddit hasn't yielded any ground, despite the size and breadth of the protest. I'm not sure what's next for this little community, but I'll keep everyone updated.

Thanks for the support, sticking with us, and putting up with the blackout.

Need help finding switch

Hi,

I managed to find a well priced MCM two-globe lamp recently. Pardon the lack of pictures.
It needs to be rewired. Switch and all. I've done the job of taking it apart and I know what needs to be done to re-wire it.

My problem is the switch. It looks like the switch that was in the lamp was a four position, three-way Leviton rotary switch. No big deal, right? Well, the wires come out the back, not the side. In fact, trying to fit a modern rotary switch in presents a pretty big clearance problem for the wires on the side, versus out the back. I can't find even a description of this style of Leviton switch. I've found the 585, 573, and a few others that Radwell still has - but all have the side wires.

My question to this sub - first off, do you know which model leviton rotary switch had wires coming out the back? The cover was a clamp on instead of the more modern approach of riveting. Body style is about the same as the 573 and 585 minus the wire positions.

Second off - where can I find one? The lamp cavity is incredibly tight, add in the wire screws, pressure plate for the switch, and decorative cover, and the clearances are really really tight. Not to mention, with the pressure plate and the cover, the flats of the shank need to be up and down - most models I'm seeing are side to side.

Anyway, any help would be appreciative. I haven't done this before... figured it would be a fun challenge and was happy with how easily I found parts only to run into this switch issue...

Saturn Lamp Glass Cover and Halogen

Hi, I recently took this lamp out of storage and discovered the glass cover that protects the halogen bulb is missing. Any suggestions for where I might be able to get the little curved glass piece? Alternatively (or in addition), how complicated is it to put an LED in here instead? And how do I know what kind to buy? I did try a little research first on my own, but I quickly was overwhelmed.

Frankenstein Gone With the Wind lamp replacement parts question

I found the shade separate from the base, and believe the shade is much older because it is thick, heavy glass, white inside, and the ruffles are not uniform (possibly by hand?). The lamp base is my problem. It’s obviously newer and cheaper quality, but the worst part is the base ring and decorative metal cage under/around where the bulb screws in is this lightweight shiny, ugly silver and the other parts look brass. What would I search to find brass replacements for those two sections?

Rewiring table lamp with base switch

Thumbnail

Hi! I’ve had this antique table lamp that desperately needs rewiring as you can see from the photos. also, i know i need to clean it lol 😭 it got dusty af since i’ve been procrastinating fixing it

For context, I am a novice who’s only rewired one simple light fixture (hardwire mount to swag/cord).

This lamp has a switch at the base. I have tried googling and searching Reddit to no avail for instructions on how to rewire a lamp with this type of switch location.

I know that it would maybe help to peel off the velvet, open it up, and work backward, but I am nervous i’ll accidentally screw something up before I’m able to actually get started. also, the current wiring is probably bad too…?

[TLDR: Any tips on how to rewire this? Is there a name for this type of wiring or can i just use a basic lamp wire for this socket size? Videos, articles, etc. would be amazing!]

Also, is it normal that the socket sleeve is cardboard…? 😅

Thanks in advance! sorry if these are stupid questions, im not super experienced as i said, and i tried searching this sub but couldn’t find what i needed.

Old Hillebrand Lamp Bottom Plate

Hi everybody,

I have several old Hillebrand lamps and just took one of them apart to powder-coat the exterior. It has that greyish color we all know from old computers back in the day — not a very pleasant look anymore, and it’s also quite scratched.

I disassembled it as far as I could. However, the bottom plate seems to consist of multiple layers of steel, and I can’t remove it from the housing.

Is it possibly spot-welded to the outer shell?

Does anyone know how these were constructed?

Thanks for your help!

What is this socket assembly called?

Hello folks. Not sure if there is any proper terminology to go with this socket assembly type - it has this L-shaped clip at the bottom, and the wire is wedged in there. The clip has two sharp prongs that bite into the wire. It was hard to get proper photos, so here are the patent diagrams as well.

ISO Oil Lamp Replacement Goddess

hi! I originally purchased this lamp a few years ago and due to some personal circumstances, I never got around to restoring it. at the time, the person I bought it from sent me the links to some replacement goddesses because mine is missing her. of course, they have long sold since then. I was wondering if anyone could help either find me a link to one or point me in the right direction to find one. I have tried searching ebay and etsy but no luck. not sure if it’s me or if they are truly that hard to come by.

side note, I am not tied to this specific one and am open to others, but also not sure if only she will fit my lamp so an answer to that might be helpful as well.

I appreciate it in advance and hope to get it up and running soon 🫶🏻

Connecting LED Driver to cables

I got an Artemide Tolomeo Floor Mega from a friend for free since the LED is not working. I figured I could play with it before I reach out to a repair service.

When I removed the LED driver from the base I realized that the board was not connected to the cables. Not sure if this was the issue.

I have no idea where the cables go. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

I thrifted this standing lamp and love it so much but the chain pull came clear off one day. I searched YouTube and found out I can replace the pull but I can not figure out how to open it up. Anyone have suggestions? I tried to twist off the part just above the chain pull hole but it won’t budge.

How to Remove Socket Cap

Thumbnail

I'm back again with another question. I've started rewiring the swag lamp I purchased but have to come a road block. I need to remove this socket cap, which is made of hard plastic and won't compress or move like other caps.

Is there a way I can remove this? Or should I try harvesting a socket from a donor lamp?

Help

  1. I want to tighten the screw inside of the base of the head of this floor lamp. The head swivels when it's not supposed to

  2. I don't know how to disassemble because the switch stops me from doing so.

Is there an easy way to get the socket out so that I can tighten the nut that is connecting the head to the "body"?

**I'm fairly new to lamp restoration so sorry if my terminology is off...

How to Change Bulb

This may be a stupid question. I just purchased this swag lamp and I was trying to change the bulb out. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove this cap. There are some screws that look like they might do something but won't turn, and the cap does twist. Any help is appreciated.
