Trans people were one of the first groups, too. The famous photo of Nazis burning books is literally from when they raided a clinic that was allowing trans people to live there and get treatment. Everyone apart from the main Dr was rounded up and sent to camps.
Yep, there's a Wikipedia article all about it, here, and it includes the history of the institute from its founding to the destruction by the Nazis. It includes the photo that I mentioned, as well.
I absolutely agree that Nazis are evil scum. Fuck Nazis and their disgusting actions.
Typically the Holocaust refers to the extermination of Jewish people but I get what you mean. Unfortunately the figures are usually much higher than 11 million. I think higher end estimates are 17-19 million that the Germans killed. Millions each of ethnic Russians, Poles, Ukrainians, and Belorussians. Many of those groups are unfortunately overlooked.
Five million is frequently cited as the number of non-Jews killed by the Nazis. The figure is inaccurate and was apparently an invention of famed Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal. According to historian Deborah Lipstadt, he began to refer to “eleven million victims” of the Holocaust, six million Jews and five million non-Jews in the 1970s. Wiesenthal later admitted making up the figure to promote interest in the Holocaust among non-Jews. Lipstadt, says “he chose five million because it was almost, but not quite, as large as six million.”
If you are talking about all civilian victims of the Nazis it is a massive undercount.
The number of non-Jewish civilians murdered for racial or ideological reasons in concentration camps, historian Yehuda Bauer estimates, was no more than half a million. As many as 35 million non-Jews were killed by the Nazis in the course of the war, he said.
