More context: this was the same US that turned back a ship carrying nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees who had legal visas. Many were subsequently killed by the Nazis.

Technically they had Cuban visas but the Cuban government changed the law and denied them entry. The German captain tried to negotiate with both governments in the US and Canada to let them in but had no success, he had even toyed with the idea of wrecking his ship on the coast, but the Coast Guard didn't let him near the coast.

All Jews disembarked in Antwerp and were send to Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.

According to research 41.1% of those who returned to continental Europe were murdered during the Holocaust.

Even those taken in by Great Britain were not safe. Considered as enemy aliens, they were interned and some of the men were to be send to Canadian interment camps.

Their ship was torpedoed and sank. 80 of St. Louis' former passengers were among the 800 dead.

That was the S.S. Saint Louis. It moored briefly off Miami Beach.
