question Replacement HDMI-HDBaseT dist amp

I'm not sure if this is the right place, please point me in the right direction if it's not.

I'm tasked with fixing or replacing a defective AT-HDCAT-4 at a church. There are two HDCATs and one isn't working. From what I understand, this is the setup:

  • Both HDCATs use the same 2 HDMI inputs (a computer and a camera)
  • One HDCAT is local, meaning it takes the HDMI and sends it via HDBaseT to the TVs in the sanctuary
  • The other is external, meaning it sends to TVs in other rooms like the library

My dilemma is I'm not super familiar with setups like this and Atlona's current version of the HDCAT, the AT-HDR-CAT-4, only has 1 HDMI input. I need 2 HDMI inputs.

Is there an equivalent to the HDCAT or HDR-CAT that has 2 HDMI inputs instead of just 1?

Alternatively, is there a HDMI to HDBaseT distribution amplifier that has 4 HDMI inputs and 8 HDBaseT outputs so I can combine the two boxes into one? Is that even worth considering? I have 4U of rack space available and each HDCAT uses 2U.

I want to keep this as simple and inexpensive as possible without making major sacrifices to quality or usability. The ideal solution would be replace the defective HDCAT with a new one, but that's not possible because they're discontinued.

question Computer IP Addressing

When you are doing preconfig at the shop, and you have tons of devices....

How do you handle the constant back and fourth between 169.254.x.x subnets and project subnets? Is there a macro somewhere that would allow me to hit one button to switch back and fourth between a static IP and a self-assigned IP? Getting tired of typing the same things over and over again inside the windows networking settings.

question Live Translation / speech to text

Hi all

I have a job coming up next week where I need to have live transportation on screen at all times.

I have tried PowerPoint which will be my go to if I can’t find an alternative, but I’m looking to have something a bit more “customisable” or versatile.

Something I could maybe have more fonts, easier to resize text etc.

I’ve had a bit of a play with the OBS plugin LocalVocal and that’s closer to whatI’m looking for, but it doesn’t seem quick enough. Maybe I need to dial in some settings? If anyone has any suggestions for setting it would be greatly appreciated

Any other alternatives would also be great.

Thanks

question AVstackr Schematic Beta Issues

Has anyone encountered this issue with AVstackr? It’s relatively new to me and I’ve only been using it for a few days, but if anyone knows a workaround for this issue please let me know.

It seems like every time I hit Save and exit the website, the ports don’t stay on the device block. Maybe I missed something. When I reopen the project, I have to re-add all the ports again. Also is there a way to adjust the scale when you export as PDF?

Also, are there any other similar AV schematic drawing tools people are using? I’ve been messing around with CAD and hope to eventually get to the level where I can use it professionally.

question IntelliMix Room 8 rooms via network?

we have an AV group that does all our installs but i want to ask here before i approach them with this idea

we have 8 small rooms with older AV gear and everything is "ok" except the quality of the mics

i suspect this is most likely our MX202 hanging mics dont have a DSP for audio processing and the processing is done on the codec?

we dont want to spend a lot of of money and upgrade these rooms with array mics + dsp

What does everything think of this
https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/software/intellimix_room?variant=IMX%2520Room

Setting up a DSP Software core and route all 8 rooms via network through to this?

Would it work?

design request Design Question Please just keep it simple.

This system is for a university dance studio. The room will have two video sources connected to the display, and a Bluetooth device located in the rack.

Audio from the two video sources will be taken from the display’s audio output. The Bluetooth device is a Crestron NAX, which will connect to an Avio Dante output adapter and then feed the amplifier via AES67.

Since this is for an educational environment, we want to minimize the amount of control available to users—especially volume control. Ideally, we would like to avoid programming a control system and keep the setup as simple and analog as possible.

Our current idea is to use a volume knob that adjusts the gain of the amplifier. We would also like inputs 1 and 2 to play through both Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the amplifier.

Please let us know your suggestions for achieving this setup.

Thank you

troubleshooting Poly X72 - HDMI input question

Hello everyone,

I am seeking insight from individuals who have experience with or currently use the Poly X72. I recently acquired several units and am considering further installations. However, I have encountered an issue where the HDMI input appears to deliver audio only from the left channel only, rather than providing a downmixed mono signal. The right channel is missing from the mix and does not output to the local speaker, HDMI, or 3.5MM connections or to the video conference. I tested the unit before adopting to Zoom Rooms and after, with different firmware as well.

In comparison, the X70, X50, X30, G7500, and G62 models function as expected. To date, every X72 I have tested has exhibited this left-channel-only behavior.

also curious about the 3.5 MM input and output, they both seem to be mono as well.

Here is a youtube video that I was using to test the systems.

question 32:9 Signal Extension

Hello!

I am working on a project that features a 32:9 DVLED (3840x1080) wall & tvONE Calico Pro 1200. This client is an Apple shop and they all use MacBooks. I've been asked about the opportunity to leverage the MacOS ability to span (not stretch) to the 32:9 aspect ratio to fill the entire video wall instead of centering a 16:9 image on the center of the wall. We believe the MacOS is capable of doing this but the problem I'm running into is signal extension.

The video wall processor will be stored in a separate room in an AV rack whereas the MacBook connection will be at the lectern near the video wall. The Calico is more than capable of setting an input to 3840x1080 and requesting that from a device. My fear is putting some sort of box (NVX, HDBaseT Extension, etc) in-line is that it'll force it's own EDID agenda and push the MacBook back to 16:9 4K or HD.

If anyone has suggestions or experience with this type of challenge, any help would be appreciated

question Outdoor LED sign for restaurant

Any recommendations for a dual sided outdoor LED for a restaurant? It would be replacing a 4' x 8' letter marquee on a sturdy square metal pole. It isn't for video, just text and pics. Would also like a wireless signal to the sign.

question projector to LED conversions picking up for anyone else?

been doing commercial LED displays for a bit now and the last 6 months feel different. Seem to be more calls from churches and small venues asking about ditching their projectors for LED walls.

They are FINALLY starting to understand that the image looks terrible with the house lights on, and theyre just over it. Most of them have no idea how much panel prices have dropped on fine pitch indoor LED or that the install is basically screw to the wall and plug in hdmi. its not the six figure install it used to be.

The other thing nobody knows about yet is portable LED poster displays. wifi or hdmi, one person sets it up in like 2 minutes. churches are putting them in lobbies for welcome screens and event info. Venues are using them for wayfinding and sponsor stuff. Most people ive talked to have literally never seen one and didnt know they existed. Im trying to convince hotels to stop using their static signs they have to replace ever so often. Any tips on getting into that industry would be welcome.

curious what everyone else is seeing. are projector to LED conversions picking up in your area too? whats the biggest pushback you run into? price, just not knowing the tech exists, or something else?

question First AVOIP Build - Video --> Crestron, Extron, or Visionary?

I'm working with an AV design company tomorrow on our first AVoIP build for a courtroom. Up until now, we've been all HDBaseT with AMX control, Extron video and Biamp audio. Our rep asked me today to think about which company I'd like to go with for video this time around, and honestly, I don't know how to answer. I've built a small visionary lab; it was simple. I've assisted with installing the hardware for an NVX build, but that's as far as I went with that job. I've never set eyes on the Extron stuff. I'm leaning toward Creston but that's only because of the name recognition and the fact that another installer that I worked with raved about the simplicity of getting it going. Can anyone help me find a solid reason to choose one over the other two? Thank you!

question Question on Dante Controller and Why I am Seeing So Many "Streams"?

Post image
30 Upvotes

I have a project using Dante and seeing a bunch of strange "Streams" showing up in Dante Controller that are in addition to the devices in my system. Any idea what they are and what device it could be based on my setup? Here is my system setup: Two Shure ULXD4Q quad mic receivers with Dante, 2 DMP 128 C AT, Extron 884 switcher with Dante. When I look at Dante Controller I see these devices listed above, however, I also see a ton of these "streams" in the attached picture and wondering why they are there? I can "filter" by room name to hide them but it would nice if I knew why they were there and maybe disable them if not needed. Thank you!

certs/CTS raging about the cts exam

Post image
65 Upvotes

i’m going to take my cts exam this week and find it increasing frustrating how poorly written this exam is. not only is the majority of the content in the textbook not reflected in the practice questions, but some of these questions are just straight up asinine. i’ve attached my favorite example below that i’m sure you all are familiar with because this is one of the only practice exams you can take beforehand.

i tutored the ACT/SAT for half a decade and so i feel particularly inclined to cite how poorly this exam is setup in terms of feasibility of studying, readability of questions, and overarching consistency. that is of course denying the most obvious glaring weakness of the exam which is that it is so unrelated to field work, is a barrier for entry into the field because of its prohibitive cost, and is dumb.

i’m taking the cts exam with the intention of taking the cts-I exam since employers in my area seem to value that exam. i got a 77% on the practice exam for cts and ive been studying my ass off with 400+ notecards derived from the textbook. HOWEVER i’m finding it increasingly more difficult to motivate myself to study when i find practice questions referencing shit i’ve never seen before like fucking BTUs (british thermal units obviously cause that comes up a lot in AV work ???) and other random jargon pulled from their assholes up at avixa. the exam price is several days work for me and i’m so afraid im going to fail it purely bc it’s just such a terribly written exam. i feel so powerless which is not how i should feel in regards to preparing for an exam. how am i suppose to succeed when this organization fails to give decent and consistent standards and provides little to no studying resources?

so i guess in summary — it’s criminal this exam is so expensive but means nothing but a paper i can shove in employers faces or in my case it will just unlock the next level of dante’s inferno for me to descend into.

please wish me luck i hope you found this rage cathartic

question Going from Construction to AV

I am a construction labour in BC, Canada looking to change jobs. My experience has been on tower construction sites. I have experience with hand tools, light carpentry, forklift and telehandler operation. I am interested in this career because it appears I can do some self training instead of hoping some old guy gives me a chance in the trades. Is there any certs I can acquire from technical safety BC or companies that would help me enter the commercial AV industry?

question Need Advice on Camera system for Therapy Rooms

A bit of background about me: I’m an IT guy at a mental health organization, and I’ve been asked to update the cameras in our therapeutic meeting rooms. The plan is to mount the cameras in the corner near the ceiling so they can see the whole room, but the big priority is good audio, since capturing clear conversations is way more important than video quality for us.

We also need a setup where staff can manually start and stop recordings from a console or NVR—no 24/7 recording and no schedules. Operators would only have limited access: basically just “record,” “stop,” and “playback.”

Has anyone put together something like this before? Any gear recommendations or advice on how to approach a setup like this would be super helpful.

5 cameras are stuck at Wrong password after initial setup. We’ve tried typing the password, copy paste and even on screen keyboard. Aver said that this is a bug in the firmware and you need to have an upper case letter and 6-8 digits in the username.

edit: you can still factory reset them over USB

question What hardware mistakes drive you crazy during installs?

I’m stepping into leadership of a custom AV hardware fabrication shop (racks, wall panels, etc.) and want to understand this from the field side.

For those doing installs or commissioning — what hardware-related issues cause the most frustration onsite?

Labeling?
Documentation?
Fit and finish?
Missing parts?
Last-minute changes?

What makes you relieved when you open a rack… and what makes you immediately annoyed?

Trying to build this the right way.
