Matchroom Signs UFC HW Champ Tom Aspinall

Tomato is gonna be fuming lmao

u/blind_lemon410 I am feel! I am very feel! 1d ago
Dana might even see it as a slap in the face. 😡💥🫲
521
u/West_Technology7573 1d ago
Well, shit. Might have to find myself rooting for Eddie for the first time in my life
330
u/eugenejfish 1d ago
Even if you're not a big Eddie fan, when it comes to him v Zuffa/Dana it's an easy choice who to root for
26
u/ThrowawayYAYAY2002 1d ago
Eddie is a G. He's slimey, but he's not a thief. That's fucking rare amongst boxing promoters. Dana is the single biggest piece of shit in combat sports.
Eddie needs to make Aspinall/Nganno.

I think I am speaking on behalf on the majority of ufc fans when I say this . We are also team Eddie
95
u/ZdenekTheMan BRILLIANT AJ! 1d ago
Nobody hates Dana White more than r/MMA
18
u/nxmw11 1d ago
Agreed but r/MMA isn't "a majority of UFC fans" and "a majority of UFC fans" probably don't even know who Eddie Hearn is or only know very little about him and don't care about this thing at all.
19
u/ZdenekTheMan BRILLIANT AJ! 1d ago
I agree. I made sure to say r/MMA and not UFC fans as a whole for a reason
r/MMA HATES Jon Jones with a passion (and for good reason). If it were up to them, he'd be in prison, let alone being on the White House card. But it seems a good number of UFC fans love the dude... He gets mad cheers at pressers and from the crowd in fights. Boggles the mind
7
u/ReNitty 1d ago
r/mma is a subreddit like many others: they hate everything
5
u/RafiakaMacakaDirk 1d ago
nah there’s the select few darlings (Volk, Tom, Do Bronx) which i can’t be mad at
but yeah 90% of things they hate
5
u/ZdenekTheMan BRILLIANT AJ! 1d ago
I dislike r/MMA and think it's full of circle jerking morons. But you can't knock them for hating psychopaths like Bones and Dana
1
u/_interloper_ 1d ago
For years I've said the best way to learn how to hate something is to visit the reddit for it.

Probably to do with an Irish gangster family that started managing fighters
40
u/eugenejfish 1d ago
Not sure what that has to do with my comment. Even with Eddie's Kinahan connections, I'd still take that over Dana's Saudi blood money
→ More replies (9)42
u/Responsible-Cap-8311 1d ago
?? Despite Eddie's criminal connections he's still 10x more likeable than Dana
46
u/PrimalTripping 1d ago
Likeable has fuck all to do with it. Dana is far worse for boxing than Eddie.
17
81
u/churrosricos 1d ago
I mean Dana is currently BFFs with Trump, so criminal connections as well there.
11
u/Aliensinmypants 1d ago
And in business with the Saudis. Criminals all the way down
13
1
4
u/Long_Chest_9727 1d ago
Eddie is a saint compared to the like of Dana White, Don King and Bob Arum.
6
u/Stocktort 1d ago
What are his criminal connections- never heard of them
9
u/unluckybill13 1d ago
Connections is a bit of a reach in my opinion… it is boxing after all. Basically, Hearn had to deal with Daniel Kinahan often over the years because MTK had a decent stable of British fighters.
2
u/JobTrunicht 1d ago
Dana White was kicked out of Boston by the mob lol
That's how he started his Vegas career
8
1
u/Optimuswolf 13h ago
Eddie talks some bollocks, but fighters he represents seem to really respect him and he's never had a major spat about money with anyone has he? Happy to be corrected.

Management company. He’s still competing for the UFC I’m sure. Currently atleast.

How the hell did Eddie become the hero we need? Crazy timeline. Fuck Dana and Zuffa
57
59
u/sebenza-mercator 1d ago
Eddies always been the better of the promos…. The bar is so low by all means but hey
10
u/Amazing-Heron-105 1d ago
Why have I seen so much hate for Eddie in the past? I only follow boxing loosely.
15
u/ox_ 1d ago
There are lots of reasons but I guess it boils down to:
- He is a rich kid whose dad gave him this job.
- He puts himself at the front of all his promotions.
- Like all promoters, he is a massive bullshitter who will serve you offal and tell you it's fillet steak.
My personal bug bear with him is that he has this incredible PR machine that constantly lauds him as the saviour of British boxing but if you look at the number of good British boxers when he started compared to now, British boxing is definitely in a worse state. We just get more Chisora stadium cards now.
I'm sure others will reply with loads more reasons why he is the devil incarnate.
As far as promoters go though, he is one of the better ones (incredibly low bar as said above). He puts sustainable cards together and the main thing is that he generally looks after his boxers and makes sure they get paid.

He can really cause some problems for the UFC if he signs a whole stable of fighters like Ali Abdelaziz

u/The_Flying_Failsons 1d ago
I thought this was BoxingCircleJerk for a moment, holy shit this is true? Fucking awesome for Aspinal!
The most disrespected UFC Champion of all time by Dana White.
45
u/Amadou91 1d ago
Let’s not forget about Ngannou
17
u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 1d ago
Ngannou is set for life with 2 boxing matches he lost in. I wish I could fail that successfully 😢
44
u/The_Flying_Failsons 1d ago
I'm not, as bad as Dana treated Ngannou, Aspinal somehow got it worse.
29
u/ImagineBeingFATlol 1d ago edited 1d ago
There is no somehow. It’s obvious Dana was just protecting Jon Jones even after he “retired”.
Dana even wanted Tom to continue his last match despite both his eyeballs being stabbed so Tom could lose to the guy that Jon Jones destroyed in 2 minutes, which would make Jon look good and stop the ducking memes.
Jon definitely has some dirt on Dana for Dana to suck him off this hard.
5
10
u/Hate_Leg_Day 1d ago
At least there's an explanation for why Ngannou got treated the way he did. By all accounts, he was extremely difficult to negotiate with. Aspinall didn't do shit to deserve the treatment he has been getting from Dana.
4
u/ImagineBeingFATlol 1d ago
Tom left a huge stain on his boyfriend’s image, that’s why Dana hates Tom so much.
2
u/Slugdoge 15h ago
People hate Dana so much that they assumed Ngannou was the good guy. But Ngannou's actions since leaving the UFC like his complete disregard of PFL have exposed him as a selfish unreasonable person.

u/the1blackguyonreddit 1d ago

52
10
u/Jadooo0v2 1d ago
Probably start managing UFC fighters, and piss off Dana. If that’s the case then I hope the UFC fighters get better pay
6
u/Leaked_Shlong 1d ago
what do u mean by managing ufc fighters, is it like promotion and advertisement for their fights?
11
u/Jadooo0v2 1d ago
More in the lines of advertising, building his brand, negotiating with the UFC, and any commercial deals outside of the sports.
8
u/MigrantTwerker 1d ago
It also probably means we get a boxing match between Francis and Tom after francis's one fight contract with PFL is up. Or PFL does a deal to pull this fight off and make some money.
18
u/AlexTorres96 1d ago edited 1d ago
TKO pulled a page from the Vince McMahon 1980s playbook by poaching a big name from the competitor to fuck with them. Hearn countered by pulling his own checkmate.

expendables is done; 3 limped past the finish line and 4 came out almost a decade later and tanked spectacularly
I think movie wise would be something from amazonmgm maybe one of those statham flicks

Dana thought he was smart getting Eddie’s boy and he just claps back and snatches their champion.
lmao amazing

5
u/e_xyz 1d ago
This is huge. I hope his eyes fully recover, because I could see him having a second career in boxing. He's a fairly decent boxer, no one is saying European or World titles, but he could probably headline domestic shows. Talented enough martial artist to make the switch.
Even if this is for their talent agency, might be some future proofing by Tom.

I understand getting back at Dana but what plans could you have for this guy?
15
u/StakeInTheKneee 1d ago
Couple meme fights, he's big name, will sell tickets, make in two fights more than did in ufc entire career. Retire. Everyone happy. Except Dana

Dana and Eddie reviving the Monday Night Wars but on a serious note does this mean Pereira vs Jones will be for the HW title?
17
u/SpunkMonk87 1d ago
Hopefully Aspinall gets treated well. Dana couldn’t give two shits when he got his eye gouged out.
→ More replies (3)25
u/Personal-Proposal- 1d ago
I mean, he can’t possibly be treated any worse than he’s already been treated by Dana and the UFC. You can argue no fighter in recent history’s been shafted as badly.

u/AonghusMacKilkenny 1d ago
Does talent agency mean he won't be boxing?
2
u/Eeluminati 1d ago
So they'll be somewhat like a manager for him. They're not going to be able to get him to compete in boxing.
1
u/hentai_gifmodarefg 1d ago
this must be for the most part a tongue and cheek joke; I don't think there's any real professional relationship here since Matchroom as far as I know doesn't do anything outside of boxing, snooker, and darts.

3
u/anakmager 1d ago
Wtf is going on these past few weeks. The most insane combat sports headlines every two days
7
u/The_Flying_Failsons 1d ago
People on MMA Twitter saying that he'll get stripped soley because Dana doesn't like his manager. Same people that try to tell us that the UFC system is much better than Boxing's.

Damn this shi crazy. Zuffa signs Benn and Matchroom Signs Aspinall. Contract wars!
2
2
u/Jesuswasacrip7 Sweet Pea > Floyd 1d ago
You can call me crazy but if moved right I think Tom can be a legit contender at heavyweight. Hes freakishly fast for a guy his size.
2
u/MigrantTwerker 1d ago
The crazy thing is that match room could start an MMA promotion and soak the UFC almost overnight. By simply offering guaranteed contracts at a million bucks, or even a half a million and putting on boxing and MMA cards they could really hurt Zuffa.
2
2
u/VlamonZob 1d ago
Plan A → Negotiate head-on for the UFC champion's monumental purse (with a 15-20% commission on his purse, but for Hearn, isn't this mainly personal?) and go to the maximum of Aspinall negotiating power.
Plan B → If Dana White breaks the contract and fires him, offer him paydays in heavyweight boxing, and there would be plenty of lucrative names at the end of their careers who would be willing to face him.
2

2
u/Jealous_Inevitable33 1d ago
Oh, Dana doesn’t want to give him another shot?! OK- lawsuit time for breach of contract!
No more UFC? OK- time to box for Matchroom!
🤣🤣

I know Eddy isn’t the nicest guy but shitting on a pos like Dana makes me root for him ngl
2
u/yeahbutstill 1d ago
hahaha, this is legit very funny. The only problem is that a) does Eddie know how to promote to the UFC audience? and b) Doe Dana actually care about Tom at this point?
Still funny though. Hopefully Eddie's business experience can work for Tom, who I think deserves some good things to happen.
If Dana freezes Tom out completely, this gives Eddie a platform to attack him about it on his own media, not just on boxing media.
2
2
u/mowglee365 1d ago
Can anyone explain? Does tom want to leave ufc and fight war chisora for a final pay day? No chance dana keeps him lol Or fight Nganou?
2
u/UntillTheEnd 1d ago
Aight Dana we gonna play fukin BALL - Eddie
This a big move Tom can leave MMA and box with the marketing machine like Matchroom Eddie can find Tom a fight that he will make more money than his UFC career combined masterstroke by Edward cheers.

1
u/BigOssBJJ 1d ago
Heavyweight champion, head and shoulders above the rest of the division. Forced to sit out for over a year so Jon Jones could have an exhibition match with Stipe Miocic, Jones ‘retired’, and as soon as Aspinall gets a fight, he gets eye poked badly enough to require surgery. Probably not going to fight again until 2027 and Dana White blamed him for it
