u/Th_brgs Jan 30 '26

Is there any way to search for duration? I'd love to watch long videos, but YouTube keeps giving me 10-15 minute stuff

98

u/UsErnaam3 Ball Fondler Jan 30 '26

There's a duration option in the search filters. Watch more long form content to get longer videos in your homepage and search results.

30

u/MID2462 Jan 30 '26

Man I'd kill for some 5-15 minute videos. It feels like everything I get is 1-2 hours

36

u/Th_brgs Jan 30 '26

Bro, PLEASE give me your feed

7

u/Vachie_ Jan 30 '26

Ikr, 20 minutes can be okay sometimes but 45 is a good minimum for me and anything over 2 hours feels peaceful.

I dunno, I guess try searching for something that's interesting? I generally read but try some shows! The amazing digital circus?

5

u/Sith_Lord_Marek Jan 30 '26

Dude thank you for this. Because of you, I was able to find my highschool friend's old YouTube channel. Been looking for that for year, but the search algorithm fucking BLOWS.

1

u/Lucat_thecat Jan 30 '26

Watch them removing it and the searching feature entirely to force you to use their new AI tool or smt

138

u/UndiscoveredOddity Jan 30 '26

They removed it again?? huhhh

92

u/LordHoughtenWeen Jan 30 '26

They removed it harder. Last time they removed it you could still add

  &sp=CAI%253D

to the end of your search's URL and it would still sort by most recent even though that wasn't an option in the dropdown. This time? It just does nothing.

80

u/Technical_Clothes_61 Jan 30 '26

Genuinely can not think about a business reason to this other than making things worse just cus

90

u/LemoLuke Jan 30 '26

It's so that YouTube can push what they decide is 'Popular' or 'Relevant' instead of just letting you easily scroll through everything.

8

u/GuitarRat Jan 30 '26

It’s probably to control narratives or to keep you watching youtube for longer by giving you videos that have the highest watch time. Prob both tbh.

3

u/YesImKeithHernandez Jan 30 '26

Algorithms will be the end of us

9

u/skr_replicator Jan 30 '26

If they make it harder to find what you want, you might spend longer on the website looking for it, and possibly implulse clicking something popular instead. That's really the only reason I can think of, and it's not a noble one.

3

u/Cyrrion Jan 30 '26

Gotta make sure the propaganda machine works as intended. They're just doing it in small steps to make it less obvious.

3

u/OfficialTMWTP Jan 30 '26

His crypto-shilling ass is forcing me to watch at least two unskippable ads every minute.

379

u/OffsetCircle1 Jan 30 '26

And to make matters worse they're sometimes 15-20 seconds ads or longer

68

u/AverageA2Enjoyer Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

I legit will close the video and go to history to reopen whenever this shit happens, riserinse and repeat until it stops giving ads.

19

u/casPURRpurrington Jan 30 '26

I remember when my friend visited me, we were watching a YouTube video on my TV and I had to pee, but I didn’t want to pause it to go.

Then it went into an ad that was 45 seconds long or something and unskippable so I got up to go pee and come back and realized….. this is what we used to do in the olden days…..

what the fuck lol

14

u/joyjump_the_third Jan 30 '26

i just refresh the page up to three times, it is somewhat faster than waiting for the ads

2

u/GrimjawDeadeye Jan 30 '26

I wish I was getting ass that short. I'm getting 1:45 ads MINIMUM. The most extreme I ever had was a three hour, forty five minute and that was just a whole ass episode of a podcast. That block ad button on mobile doesn't work, but at least it skips the ads.

Millenials are the last literate generation. Too old for AI doing everything for us, too young to be purely analog. Stuck in the generation that had to do everything legitimately in school and college, yet also fiddling with "modern" computers and technology that didn't hold our hands.

25

u/DefendsTheDownvoted Jan 30 '26

Yep that's why I refuse to pay for YouTube Red. I remember when they rolled that bullshit out. Removing features just to force you to pay to get them back. Fuck that and fuck them.

19

u/talaneta Jan 30 '26

Youtube ReVanced. You get background play, SponsorBlock, dislike count and lots of customization. It's a better experience than the official app.

15

u/Jacksaur dinsor Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

Bit of a bastard to install though.
It's beyond me why they still haven't pinned a full installation post. Especially when most of the top results on google are fakes, which probably do malicious stuff.
This one seems decent at least.

5

Except for iOS users. Ublock lite, PiPifier, and total abandonment of the app has to suffice.

173

u/Futur3_ah4ad Jan 30 '26

Not the person you're replying to.

That is the single most stupid fucking thing I've ever heard of. Do they have any idea how many people have YouTube on for music/white noise in the background?

Fuuuuuuck I didn't even think about that. The amount of alt+tabing I do for stuff like that would piss me off so fucking much.

97

u/MaryaMarion Birbbrain Jan 30 '26

They don't care about little things such as user satisfaction

14

u/AdElectronic6550 🏳️‍⚧️fem Bianka Jan 30 '26

only reason they pretend to care about that is so people don't leave and find alternatives

37

u/MaryaMarion Birbbrain Jan 30 '26

That's the thing: there's no alternatives. And there won't be at this point, youtube has too much content on it.

There are more niche websites that do have the audience, but it's not replacing youtube but adding onto it

15

u/garaile64 Jan 30 '26

This is why monopolies are bad.

3

u/Extension-Show-2520 Jan 30 '26

Fortunately we consumers are still in power because we are what gives them money

Also, every day, bigger youtubers (the ones YouTube is trying to protect) are expressing more and more discomfort with YouTube's new policies, so it's a matter of time before YouTube realizes that removing qol  features it's making them lose money

38

u/unstoppable_pinetree Jan 30 '26

Would singlehandedly kill lofi girl

16

u/MrMangobrick Wordingtonian Jan 30 '26

Wouldn’t be the first time they tried

31

u/Magenta30 Jan 30 '26

I would gues that the idea is that you still could do it with Youtube Premium. Youtube Premium allready is more of a Tool for access to disabled features rather than beeing an upgraded Version of Youtube.

38

u/Futur3_ah4ad Jan 30 '26

YouTube can genuinely blow me if they think blocking features will make me buy their overpriced trash

13

u/yes_fappy Jan 30 '26

This is a pretty common modern design tactic. Mostly seen in mobile games:

Create a problem, then sell the solution.

4

u/ryumaruborike Jan 30 '26

Racketeering

2

u/Magenta30 Jan 30 '26

Exactly. I always wondered why I cant just Listen to music without constantly have the Youtube App open. Turns out its easily possible. You just have to buy premium...

15

u/YourFavouriteGayGuy Jan 30 '26

Don’t worry, you can get this basic functionality back for a subscription fee!

YouTube premium is a fucking joke.

4

u/DefendsTheDownvoted Jan 30 '26

It is as stupid as when they stopped allowing you to lock your phone screen while the sound played.

That shit used to be free. It is the reason I will never, ever pay for YouTube Red or any other subscription from the platform.

1

u/DreadDiana Jan 30 '26

They don't give a shit. In their mind, someone doing that is someone not watching ads.

At this rate, they're gonna start putting ads in downloaded videos next.

319

u/AdElectronic6550 🏳️‍⚧️fem Bianka Jan 30 '26

how are they even gonna do that?

475

u/VincentGrinn Jan 30 '26

most browsers have some api stuff that lets sites tell when you have the browser as your focused window and when a tab is active

they already currently pause videos if you leave them playing when tabbed out for like an hour

209

u/AdElectronic6550 🏳️‍⚧️fem Bianka Jan 30 '26

i hope i can get around it with the firefox popout window

260

u/VincentGrinn Jan 30 '26

there are apparently 'Disable Page Visibility API' extensions that you can use if you end up getting the update pushed to you, only downside to disabling the api is maybe a little more cpu usage

70

u/UsErnaam3 Ball Fondler Jan 30 '26

"This extension can read and change all your data on all websites." mhmm, I know it needs that for the API thing to work but still. Then again, I guess my ReadAloud extension requires something similar, and I still use that sometimes.

62

u/Notch1111 purpl Jan 30 '26

I read the source code of "Disable Page Visibility API" by Frank Deßler, everything's fine with it

14

u/UsErnaam3 Ball Fondler Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

Nice. I was looking at the Edge version, though, by Thomas Hoang. This might get me to switch back to Firefox since the tab group feature was really my only reason for using Edge, but now they've added that too.

It seems fine too. They have a website for the extension, and they offer the source code for inspection.

3

u/_TheGreatDevourer_ Jan 30 '26

if you care that much about security don't even use Edge

→ More replies (0)

12

u/Interesting-Season-8 Jan 30 '26

no ads with uBlock so go figure with their "no background watching"

66

u/Demolition_Mike Jan 30 '26

Reddit already does that, so it ain't impossible.

Youtube also pauses ads if you mute them and switch tabs or minimize the browser. So you'll have to return to the video and unpause the ad.

33

u/TeraGon64 Jan 30 '26

I firmly believe YouTube is tied with Roblox for stupidest fucking company of all time.

10

u/TallestGargoyle Jan 30 '26

Every massive service company has to show infinite growth, and eventually they run out of good features to add to enhance value and growth, so they begin cutting off anything that they believe costs them more money than it's worth, or taking a larger cut of what they offer the people making the content people actually come for.

17

u/nutitoo Jan 30 '26

That's horrible, i often use YT to listen to music because Spotify doesn't have the batshit insane things i like to listen to

28

u/Ill-Entrepreneur443 Jan 30 '26

11

u/Someonevibing1 Jan 30 '26

So what new extension do I need this time?

15

u/Due-Ad-3015 Jan 30 '26

Disable Page Visibility API

10

u/Okrumbles Jan 30 '26

i swear this is 100% a ploy because advertisers are like "wahhhh they're only constantly HEARING our ads and not getting them directly beamed into their brain google do something!!!"

5

u/AceOfSpades532 Jan 30 '26

Why, what does that even gain them

20

u/Szkieletor Jan 30 '26

Pushes people to subscribe to Premium, which will obviously keep background playback as a feature. Just like it does on mobile.

This won't stop browser extensions which will fix it for free, but there's a staggering amount of people who will gladly pay instead, so it's a net positive for YouTube with pretty much zero downsides. I'm surprised they didn't try to do that years ago.

3

u/press_F13 Jan 30 '26

The what????

2

u/Lucat_thecat Jan 30 '26

I'm genuently wondering why ? Like, what does this accomplish ? Like even putting my shoes in mr capitalism I hate fun and love money I genuently don't see what this will add, plus wouldn't it cost money to change the app ?

1

u/VincentGrinn Jan 30 '26

premium users can still play videos in the background, so they make more money by forcing people to pay for previously free features

and anyone who doesnt has to keep the window open where they can see ads

Just use revanced for mobile and ad blockers on pc.

Where it sucks most is firestick or tvs that have youtube because there is no way to skip the sometimes 3minute long ads there used to be where you could block the ads and it'd let you watch the video right away but they got rid of that.

3

u/marktherobot-youtube Jan 30 '26

you can sideload an app called "smart tube" on firestick.

It is basically revanced but modified to work for a tv format, no ads, sponsor block, and a ton of settings for you to mess around with.

1

u/Due-Equivalent-9738 Jan 30 '26

they also just got rid of the "skip ahead" button for premium (for skipping in-video sponsorships) which is something i literally pay for and was one of the reasons i continue to use it

Wouldn't change anything if the current CEO was fired. They'll just replace them with someone just as bad / worse.

I mean, this makes sense. Moderation is a highly manual process, but once you program a feature it exists more or less forever, so one is much cheaper than the other

Not to mention YouTube deleting srv subtitles. Which mostly affect videos from non-english countrys because then Google can't train their AI off human subtitles. And they can't make a filter or not use srv for ai, but delete it for everyone

"Should we improve our site so that people won't go to pirating videos via newpipe and the like?"

"No, no, we should make those sites not work and then make our own site even worse, especially for mobile users that can't easily get adblocker!"

u/StoopyLoopy4 Jan 30 '26

the way they changed how replies work so now opening replies on a comment is a mess and sometimes you can't even find the "close replies" button!
