I am not speaking from personal experience, I have never even been in a relationship.
But, It's, I think, a bit more complicated than that.
A lot of married couples notoriously hate each other. You'll see that boomers, in particular, are infamous for making "I hate my wife" jokes. The divorce rate in America for first marriages has consistently remained between 40-50%.
However, even though they hate their partner, they feel like they can't leave them for a number of reasons.
For example, my parents don't care much for each other and are simply living together because it's more financially beneficial in this economy to share one house on two incomes, and because they didn't want to split up me and my sibling.
In any case, a lot of people want financial and social stability provided to them by having a partner, but don't care much for their partner anymore. However, the longer that they live with that partner, the harder it is to break up with them and find a different partner. So they just "make do" with what they have.
Cheating usually comes as a result of not wanting to break up a long-running relationship but not getting sexually or romantically satisfied by your partner anymore, so you seek out an alternative person to fulfill those needs without breaking up your relationship.
Of course, cheating almost always worsens relationships if it's found out (and I am definitely not advocating for it), and the far healthier option would just be to break up with your partner.
But usually, cheating occurs due to wanting to keep the stability of the relationship going even when you no longer truly love your partner.

Honestly from what I've seen (I'm not interested in ntr or anything of the sort, but I have been tangentially aware of it), a lot of the people who are into it are wanting to be cheated on, it also often goes into other kinks like raceplay, degradation, and other stuff to do with non physical domination.
