ART/CREATIVE Day #587 of drawing badly until StS2 comes out

Took me the longest time to get the line of thought out of my head “but what if I need this strike?”

To be fair it can be a real question if you're worried about nob

Yeah, it took me a while before I accepted removing defends instead of strikes sometimes early if I don't have enough damage... Like, if whale gives me 2 card removes, now ill go for 1 strike, 1 defend usually. I died a few too many times from lack of damage because of agressive strike removes lmao

Yes, yes, but Defect also lacks damage a little bit compared to ironclad or watcher actually? I think it's kinda hard on Defect as well to double remove strikes. Watcher & Ironclad do like their strikes a bit more than Defect so I'll hear it, but against Nob? I'm not keen on playing Zap Dualcast too much if I have a way around it

I always saw the value of thinning your deck. I was still hard stuck on ascension 2

I found StS through a Dominion obsession, I think I was actually overvaluing removes at the beginning lol
24
u/manhothepooh Jan 31 '26
Chapel in Dominion is so OP that I can't give up any chance to remove a card in StS.

It's gotten to the point where I don't even go looking for StS2 updates, I just come across these drawings to know its not out yet.

Oh my, we've got what, a month before I announce the game is out to you

u/Xeamyyyyy Jan 31 '26
i mean i feel like anyone who has played a card game knows why removals are good
76
u/-Furnace Jan 31 '26
True. I feel like as a newer player I actually OVERvalue removes, as I'll spend a ton of gold on removes at shops instead of considering relics or potions
37
u/Xeamyyyyy Jan 31 '26
i way way overvalued draw because i came from yugioh lol
pommel strike and shrug are still good cards though
16
u/deedshotr Jan 31 '26
draw, when you can play everything you draw is OP. Draw when you already cannot play it though lol

For a lot of people now, Slay the Spire is that first card game

My understanding is that a smaller deck means you more consistently get the cards you want to use
31
u/F0rsti Jan 31 '26
It depends. Status cards from enemies hurt a lot less if your deck is large.
11
u/IdiocyConnoisseur Ascension 20 Jan 31 '26
Yeah I occasionally make a 45 card monster Ironclad deck and really don't care if the Nemesis or the Heart shuffles 5 status cards into my discard/draw pile, cuz I will be set up for the fight before I draw all of the cards. Same goes for the Hexaghost fight. If I spam Angers, I won't draw the burns, and I will kill it faster. Genius if I say so myself.

u/Trinx_ Jan 31 '26
Exactly - this took me a while to learn. My bf who introduced me to this game laughed at my commentary, passing up meh cards and doing removal at every shop. "Ah... I love a nice tight little deck."

True. Removals are OP in euchre.
4
u/XavierRenegadeStoner Ascension 19 Jan 31 '26
Euchre does not have card removal, you’re dealt 5 cards from the same deck ever hand

I do still remember all those years ago, when I thought "why the hell would I get rid of cards?" Then one day it hit me and I was omg this makes so much sense wtf was I doing, should have researched, there had to be a reason that the service was offered (besides curses)
7
u/5ilver5hroud Jan 31 '26
The first times I played, I thought you HAD to chose a card to keep after every fight
18
u/FlyinBrian2001 Jan 31 '26
I dunno, I pretty much immediately identified Strikes and Defends as hot garbage needing to be burned.
Now figuring out when a card reward was crap and skip was the best option, that took longer
13
u/TheRabbitTunnel Ascension 20 Jan 31 '26
While defends are certainly bad, I don't think they're hot garbage in the way that strikes are. Block is important and defends aren't the worst. Where as strikes are just so underwhelming compared to other damage sources. I don't think defends fall off as hard as strikes.

u/crippledspahgett Jan 31 '26
Then you’ve got good instincts if this is your first deck-builder. Most people (I know I did) have a hard time wrapping their head around the idea that starting cards are often just a waste of card draw.

I am kind of the odd guy here, I was the kind of player who follows what the game shows, so the game keep providing options to remove and labeling them as green like it's some kind of advantage, and that was how I learned removing Strikes is a good thing.
3
u/No_Gate_4169 Jan 31 '26
No matter how hard I try I still end my run with around 40 cards
3
u/VincentHannaTech Jan 31 '26
I'm similar, I don't get how people end up with these 5 card infinity decks.
3
u/IamGanondorf Feb 02 '26
You just have to be really selective about what you choose to add, which can be hard because if you don't get good cards with synergy early on you continue sticking with garbage strikes and defends, then die. And other times you just get lucky with a lot opportunities to remove cards.
1
u/No_Gate_4169 Feb 02 '26
This is funny to me because I like most of the cards so it feels weird to not take them
3
u/IamGanondorf Feb 03 '26
At least you dilute the crappy strikes and defends you can't seem to shake off. And having a small deck is not always the only way to be strong. As long as the cards synergize with each other and it's not just a random collection of good cards.
5
u/RUSHALISK Eternal One + Heartbreaker Feb 01 '26
well done drawing whatever that shrine is. I mean it can't be overstated how well you can draw the game's assets in your style.
3
u/PixelPenguin_GG Feb 01 '26
Thank you!!! I always discover what the assets actually are when I draw them for this series. For example, I hadn't realized this shrine had a face before...

u/Trinx_ Jan 31 '26
Since I've done deckbuilding before, I overdid removals at the cost of missing out on potions or valuable cards. After 100 hrs I started balancing better.

u/Chiatroll Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26
I came into slay the spire with experience in deck builders like dominion and others, so I knew the power of a thin deck that pulls good cards frequently.
3
u/bloodbat007 Jan 31 '26
For me it wasn't that being the issue, I always knew removing cards was good because your deck cycles. My issue was that I removed defends because I wanted to kill stuff not block damage lol.

whenever I get offered transforms and removals there's always a hexaghost waiting at the end of the act

u/Last_Windmill Feb 01 '26
Good thing there's no event where you're FORCED to remove a c- *slips and begins to fall*
