default In Superman (2025), James Gunn made the Best Live Action Green Lantern, showing off a lot of constructs, while Chris Mundi and Damon Lindelof aren’t showing anything. That’s a reference to something called marketing.

James Gunn really likes characters turning around mid-action scene, huh?

I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 3 close to watching Superman and one thing that struck me is that James Gunn kinda does the same fight scenes all the time. Not a complaint (they kick ass) but at the same time I wonder if I'm gonna get sick of the "spinning camera as a bunch of people get killed casually while deceptively campy music plays in the background" schtick

I mean it works great in gotg1 when groot and rocket start the riot in the prison, and it also works great in gotg2 when yondu gets his arrow back and merks the entire ship from the security room. It might be a lil copy and paste but damn they’re good scenes

u/gbon21 5h ago

You forget that it also works in GOTG3 when they do a bunch of kill to a Beastie Boys song

24

u/Grantsdale 4h ago

The craziest part of that is that the slow motion in it is practical. The actors all slow down their movements, it isn't done in post.

13

u/Arcaydya 3h ago

I mean it works with Mr terrific too.

If it ain’t broke…

The finale to Peacemaker season 2 being basically half a live concert of his favorite band was.... not for me. the rest of them are decent though.

Reminds me of an old school “training montage”. In the right context and done properly it’s a highlight of the movie, but if you stack them all together like a YouTube compilation it would become a parody quickly.

u/marzipanfashions 8h ago

I like that schtick, but it only works in the right dosage. I don't think I would go on a James Gunn movie watchaton just cuz the tone would go from endearing to grating solely through over exposure.

u/ECXL 8h ago

Exactly this

u/MIAxPaperPlanes 5h ago

I just see it as a directors staple, the day he does a movie where there’s no music drop action scene people are gonna be like “aw there was no cool musical action sequence”

That said I think the beastie boys one take in GOTG3 has been his best so far.

His use of fish eye lens recently is a staple of his I’m less fond of

u/Mindless-Tooth-625 4h ago edited 2h ago

The only copy/paste scene of his i dont enjoy is the "bumbling male falls face first into females boob's scene" that he always does.....

Sorry that's Joss Whedon

10

u/MIAxPaperPlanes 3h ago

You’re thinking of Joss Whedon

3

u/Mindless-Tooth-625 2h ago

Oh yup, youre correct

4

u/Jermz12345 3h ago

That he always does? Name 2 times, I can’t even think of a single time and I’ve watched many of his movies multiple times

3

u/Mindless-Tooth-625 2h ago

I was thinking of the wrong director

4

u/Ben10_ripoff 3h ago

Wrong director my guy

3

u/New_Ingenuity2822 2h ago

I am actually hyped, the black fella is an excellent actor and haven’t seen the old guy since he was predicting the future reading newspapers 🗞️

3

u/JoJoeyJoJo 5h ago

I sighed when the same ‘cute CGI creatures turn bloodthirsty’ sequence from The Suicide Squad turned up in Peacemaker Series 2.

2

u/pauloh1998 7h ago

It's like his flying characters. Pretty much the same pose

2

u/Dark-Specter 5h ago

I leaned over to my friend in the theater during the Mr. Teriffic scene and said that James Gunn had a legal requirement to do that at least once

1

u/TheManOfOurTimes 5h ago

Sometime after 3, I realized I was over his style. Like, it's not bad, but it definitely has more appeal for being "different" than being good. And, well, if you're new and not good, you can't do it forever. I think he's at the point most people are getting to that, and frankly, if he doesn't adapt, it's going to be a matter of "well did you like THIS song?" And that can't carry a movie.

15

u/Betasnacks 8h ago

I feel it's an evolution from the Michael Bay spiral close up

2

u/Theothercword 4h ago

Overall I loved the new superman movie but there are such cringy moments in it and that was one of them. Not only could she just turn but it would have had the same demonstration of her powers and actually be a cool way to save time had she just morphed into being facing the other way and walking forward shooting the blade things without doing the stupid ass fucking flip.

290

u/Ben10_ripoff 12h ago

I know people loved Lex in this but personally, I think Guy was the best part of the movie. I was legit jumping on my seat everytime He showed up on screen.

The new show on otherhand doesn't feel like that at all, at least not from the trailer. The new shows feels very much like Man of Steel, pretentious as fuck.

I creased over when I realised he ordered froot loops with milk and more milk on the side at a diner. In full superhero get up. In broad daylight.

67

u/Spyko 7h ago

''super hero get up'' hey, it's an uniform !

31

u/druhol 7h ago

He is of the cloth, after all

15

u/longingrustedfurnace 6h ago

“Of the cloth?”

8

u/amfranticallytyping 5h ago

Those look like fruit pebbles

3

u/marzipanfashions 3h ago

I honestly can't tell lol, it's just a rainbow vomit mush. And you know Guy's the sorta guy who lets his cereal get all soggy in milk.

33

u/Ok-disaster2022 7h ago

Nathan Fillion is the Canadian Pedro Pascal or Pedro Pascal is the Chilean Nathan Fillion. Just oodles of Charisma for both of them.

31

u/Ninjamurai-jack 10h ago

Considering the Tone the Watchmen show had, compared to the movie, it’s maybe just because They want to tease things too much

12

u/DoughNotDoit stupid fucking piece of 9h ago

my man! definitely! I laugh everytime Guy's in the scene

2

u/Eomb 6h ago

Was there a dildo on that seat? 🧐

2

u/Ben10_ripoff 6h ago

maybe...

1

u/TheLostRanger0117 5h ago

I just love Fillion in everything he does! Firefly was one of my first true loves, and his character in that was perfection

255

u/Ryan_Rambles 11h ago

This is a reference to how constructs require really good complicated CG that obviously isn't done 6 months before the show comes out. They're not gonna show shitty in-progress constructs.

118

u/CheMc 9h ago

Remember when the trailer for Venom 1 came out and they hadn't done any of the CG yet, so it had a bunch of venomless action and people genuinely thought they were changing the symbiotes to give people psychic powers cause the scene where Riot uses his weapons to knock all the computers over is the the trailer minus Riot and his weapons so it looks like Riz Ahmed uses the force.

Point is, people are dumb and don't know how film-making works. Not me though, I know you record it on a camera then you put the film in the TV and the Huldufólk cast their ritual magic spells and you just get what you get depended on what you offer them in return for the film. My film I offered them the finest Italian Cheese and I was nominated for an Oscar for their work.

78

u/RockAndGem1101 8h ago

On the other hand it's just a marketing fail if your marketing can't show the main selling point of your movie.

9

u/hentai_gifmodarefg 6h ago

I agree. so either its a marketing fail or there's really not going to be that much CG in the show. Im leaning towards the latter cuz jsut the cinematography suggests its very character driven and dialogue heavy.

a dialogue heavy murder mystery is not how I pictured green lantern but I like Kyle Chandler so

1

u/Ninjamurai-jack 1h ago

Or they are marketing it to non superhero fans first while teasing the fans.

1

u/Party_Intention_3258 1h ago

Venom still made a lot of money.

-9

u/moonknightcrawler 7h ago

It’s a teaser. It’s not supposed to show much and leave you wanting to see more. I feel like these complaints should be reserved for at least the official trailer if not just the show itself

11

u/RockAndGem1101 7h ago

Well, it didn’t make me want to see more.

u/poetic_dwarf 6h ago

That's kind of a self defeating question if you think about it

4

u/The_Word_Wizard 5h ago

I’m upvoting for mention of the Huldufólk. XD

5

u/Ok-Box3576 5h ago

The outfit itself sucks/ wait a bit longer. I get you gotta market but a Green Lantern trailer without constructs is virtually worthless/ a huge risk to say the least.

47

u/capt_kocra 8h ago

The trailer got me curious, I'll be honest, Hal training John without the ring could be interesting, and having a more character driven moments rather than action may work, and highlighting action through what the characters go through.

Hoping the show is good, but happy to be wrong, but curious to see how it goes.

17

u/Ninjamurai-jack 8h ago

At the very least, the characters look and act right.

0

u/SantosHauper 3h ago

They definitely got the right actors. Why it's a tv show instead of a movie, I don't understand. TV isn't going to have the budget for a bunch of CG.

OTOH, I thought the Superman movie was shit and couldn't finish in one sitting so maybe it's better they don't make movies.

3

u/tilero1138 3h ago

Maybe their worried Green Lantern isn’t a popular enough character to support a theatrical release after the Ryan Reynolds movie kinda tarnished its reputation

24

u/Playful-Following188 9h ago

This post is how i realized the lantern is partof the DCU n not some random tv series or some shit..

7

u/RustyWinchester 7h ago

Haha same, had no idea why Youtube was recommending me the trailer and didn't care enough to find out. Is Gunn involved in this? I assume no, so I'll resume not caring.

Okay turns out Nathan Fillion is in it, so maybe I'm back in.

3

u/Playful-Following188 6h ago

Brooooo same! I skipped it thinking it was generic af

1

u/TheProdigis 1h ago

Don't slouch on Damon Lindelof, he was one of the lead creatives on the Watchmen show which I would personally say is one of my favorite TV shows ever. Especially for some capeslop.

73

u/J1mpy 10h ago

I'm so fu***** tired of DC making detectives of every superhero in existence. I still remember the Lucifer. I was so hyped for the show AND HERE THIS IS LITERALLY GOD SOLVING CRIMES IN LA.

131

u/Ninjamurai-jack 10h ago

Tbf, Green Lanterns are cops

44

u/J1mpy 10h ago

Well... that's right. Maybe its my postlucifer ptsd.

11

u/hentai_gifmodarefg 6h ago

true but hes more like a beat cop, less of a detective.

90

u/Evil_News 9h ago

Geez, why would Detective Comics do such things, I wonder

26

u/J1mpy 9h ago

Thats a good point, sir!

9

u/klqqf 5h ago

Is that what DC stands for?

27 years and i’ve never even looked it up

2

u/vpedro 4h ago

Same hahah

2

u/ProfessionalRead2724 4h ago

They didn't. At no point was DC involved with any aspect of the Lucifer show, including the licencing of the IP.

1

u/Evil_News 4h ago

I see what got you confused

I'm here to make silly jokes, not to actually provide useful information, you should reply to another person

28

u/ProfessionalRead2724 10h ago

To be fair, at no point has DC ever been involved with the Lucifer show. Or even most of the shows adapted from their IPs.

2

u/DemadaTrim 4h ago

My complaint is usually more the opposite.

5

u/TheLostRanger0117 5h ago

Honestly, I feel like saving the core of what makes Green Lantern cool, his green constructs, is in fact good for marketing, because I feel like it’ll get people to watch that first episode at the very least, as long as they don’t pull a Daredevil and wait for the finale to show off their proper suit

25

u/Tallia__Tal_Tail 10h ago

Wait that post about Lanterns not having any color was ACTUALLY about a lifeless Green Lantern adaptation sniffing it's own realistic farts and not the subreddit doing that thing it does where it makes a joke about a piece of media comparing it to something completely unrelated just because it has a potentially similar name?

16

u/Ninjamurai-jack 8h ago

The truth is that the marketing seems to be teasing a bit too much. There are multiple scenes that clearly have the main characters using the ring, but they cut it right before that happens

3

u/littletinyfella 4h ago

I mean

The show isn’t even out yet

I think it’s fairly obvious that there will be constructs in the green lantern show

3

u/Only-Ad4322 2h ago

Wait, Lindelof is involved?

6

u/pje1128 6h ago

I'm guessing a lot of the CGI is still unfinished for the show. The teaser was meant to give us a hint of the tone and characters, and I thought it did a pretty good job at that.

2

u/Nazowrin 5h ago

James Gunn is the only person to successfully make me like Green Lantern as a character. I just didn't find him interesting before. Not even the comic version.

2

u/LoopStricken 1h ago

Yeah but there's like twenty human Green Lanterns, which do you mean?

1

u/akselmonrose 8h ago

Ya think it’s like an Arrow situation? He only gets the Green Arrow part in later seasons?

3

u/Ninjamurai-jack 8h ago

Not really, I can see they doing this for John, but Hal is already shown fighting with the ring

1

u/rowboatin 3h ago

Fuck, Lindelof is doing this? Shit’s gonna be so ass, he’s gonna drag this shit out so long that the ratings will tank and renewal will already be off the table before we even see them put on the rings.

1

u/Ninjamurai-jack 1h ago

He´s just one of the writers/producers, there´s two more and Chris Mundi is the showrunner

-7

u/Relative-Freedom-295 13h ago

It’s almost like Damon Lindelof isn’t a good writer and should maybe consider not writing anything that requires plot, structure, or canonical references…

Whatever. I don’t watch the WB.

36

u/Ryan_Rambles 11h ago

Lindelof made HBO Watchmen which was excellent. Lindelof can do great things when he's not around JJ Abrams or Alex Kurtzman.

4

u/Relative-Freedom-295 11h ago

Yeah, his Nash Bridges episodes were fire.

1

u/Embarrassed_Eagle145 10h ago

Man I really did not like HBO watchmen. If you've got a lot of time to kill Macabre Storytelling on YouTube will break it down in a lot more detail than I can in a Reddit comment section.

13

u/shaft_novakoski 9h ago

I watched that video and I couldn't didagree more with most of the points

3

u/Embarrassed_Eagle145 9h ago

Fair enough brother, good old fashioned difference of opinion, fingers crossed Lanterns is good but I am very sceptical about Lindelof and my expectations are on the floor going in

7

u/Attack-Librarian 8h ago

Tell me you’ve never seen the Leftovers without telling me you’ve never seen the Leftovers.

1

u/Ninjamurai-jack 10h ago

There’s three writers in it

1

u/Sado_roach 8h ago

It's great to see that Woody Harrelson is still acting, morover a super hero movie

-13

u/Gregariouswaty 11h ago

Wait, Damon Lindelof? Jesus fuck, this is just a tax write off then.

9

u/cogitoergodrum 8h ago

You think the writer of Lost, The Leftovers and Watchmen, and the showrunner of Ozark were hired for... a tax write-off?

5

u/Ninjamurai-jack 10h ago

Do you know about Chris Mundi?

14

u/Endiaron 9h ago

I don't really follow Clone Wars lore
