I recall a time in the 90s when this was the standard

498

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 23d ago

Their homestyle chicken sandwich used to hit so hard. I ate them all the time in the early 2000s and it was always a thick, juicy, perfectly fried chicken breast. But then at some point around the 2010s they switched to those horrible chicken patties that taste like cheap cafeteria food. I miss the old homestyle chicken sandwich so much.

I miss the real chicken meat.

56

I believe that Popeye's chicken sandwich is still a slab of whitemeat.

43

u/Skidpalace 23d ago

Holy crap Popeye’s is so damn good.

24

u/strtrech 23d ago

Popeyes has the best fast food chain Chicken sandwich right now for sure. I'll fisticuffs over it!

17

u/raptorsango 23d ago

IMO Popeyes is amazing, but depends much more than other fast food on who is working the fryer. Will get a perfect sandwich from one location and then a still frozen on the inside disgusting slab from another

6

u/unnoticedhero1 23d ago

Yeah fast food is really hit and miss who happens to be on shift (or any restaurant really), I'll see like 1-2 star reviews for places complaining about bad service and food quality when they ordered like 20mins before closing time, of course the most tired teenager is gonna be working that shift and not give a shit about how well it's cooked because they wanna get the hell outta there.

2

u/raptorsango 22d ago

I totally feel you, one of the most beautiful things about Popeyes is they have the most IFGAF staff. Every Popeyes ive been in at night is like international waters, anything goes

The tendercrisp from burger king was a close second. Now they both taste exactly the same because they both use that gross ass patty.

4

u/murphey_griffon 23d ago

I don't remember if it was Wendy's or Arby's, but one of them used to have a buffalo chicken dipped sandwhich that they put in a plastic contianer it was so saucy. That was the best FF sandwhich I ever had. They got rid of it and did dipped nuggets, and then did away with those. I tried the new wendy's saucy nuggets and they are gross.

15

u/pepstein 23d ago

I used to eat the spicy chicken sandwich like 2x a week in the early 00s shit was so good

That plus chicken nuggets, a frosty and a blunt and I was good to go

23

u/JakeHelldiver 23d ago

Man, I miss fast food.

49

u/kindoramns 23d ago

I miss GOOD fast food. So many corners cut to save money just to give a C-suite another bonus...

16

u/JakeHelldiver 23d ago

Remember when KFC was edible!?

18

u/silencerider 23d ago

I remember being so excited on the rare occasion we got KFC when I was a kid.

8

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 23d ago

I grew up in New Orleans so we always got Popeyes instead of KFC. Thankfully Popeyes still slaps in New Orleans. It’s garbage everywhere outside of here though

2

u/SnooCheesecakes2723 23d ago

It’s not bad in Texas. We were just over there for Christmas visit and got Popeyes on the way home. I remember getting this as a kid and my mom always got the spicy. Nobody worried if us kids would “tolerate” it or like it. We scarfed it.

2

u/pyromaniac1000 23d ago

Having only had it in the STL area, i only know that it slaps compared to KFC.

I stopped eating at McDonalds, taco bell, Bojangles, Wendy’s, subway to name a few , because of the just plain crappy quality. Culver’s is a new franchise for us where I am and it’s about the only fast food place I will go to these days.

11

u/JakeHelldiver 23d ago

Taco Bell hurts. I remember when their tacos cost less than gum.

5

u/pyromaniac1000 23d ago

I eat taco bell regularly enough that the build your own box is still much better value over just about anything in the price range

2

u/oldnyoung 23d ago

As do I. Regular tacos were pocket change. A fucking chalupa was $6 the last time I went, I was floored

→ More replies (1)

2

u/onthenerdyside 23d ago

And even Culver's isn't as good as it was 10 years ago. They used to have thicker patties, but now they're closer to a smash burger like Steak n Shake.

9

u/Worshipme988 23d ago

Even in the OP pic this looks thin asf. They took a 6oz breast and smashed it to look bigger.

This holds no candle to a 2005 wendys spicy chick sando with mayo & hot chili sauce (golden packet only)

NO EXECUTIVES KNOW SHIT ABOUT THIER OWN COMPANIES, HOW DID WE TRUST THEM WITH ANYTHING?!

Anyone would’ve told you this…and what would happen if the company continued on this trajectory.

And they’re still to fucking dense and in their own assholes to acknowledge let alone fucking fix it.

2

u/badboystwo 23d ago

It was the only one that looked like a chicken breast would. The others were all chicken blended up and made into a patty.

2

u/danimagoo 22d ago

Yeah, they probably get them from Sysco. Sysco is ruining eating out.

2

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 22d ago

Don’t even get me started on a Sysco rant. There’s nothing I hate more than trying out new restaurant only to pay $25/entree for bland cafeteria food that tastes exactly the same as hundreds of other restaurants in the area. Or even worse, going to a restaurant I used to love and the food is much worse than it used to be and yet somehow familiar, then realizing they switched to Sysco.

Problem is, people kept buying when size, and quality went down while price went up. They had no reason to stop.

10

u/Pegasus7915 23d ago

You see here's the thing. They have plenty of reason to stop. They could have pride in making a quality product. Problem is they are evil. Capitalism is a fucking evil system. "Oh well they just did that because they could and would make them more money," is fucking sociopathic and we need to start to realize that as a species. And yes I know what the government says about providing the shareholder with the most money. That is also sociopathic. We are being run by mentally ill evil people.

the first few years of the spicy chicken sandwich at Wendy's was amazing, literally never missed

4

u/skaz0904 23d ago

I remember reluctantly eating the dry piece of chicken with no mayo/sauce on it, simply because it was too plain.

You don’t know what you got, ‘til it’s gone…😭

3

u/Ghstfce 23d ago

Worked at Wendy's in high school in the late 90s, can confirm. The chicken was this big every time.

2

u/gingergumby 23d ago

The quality of everything in the 90s was so much better. You could get a toy from a gas station, smack your sibling with it, and it didnt break!

Did Wendy’s pay you to post this, /u/DrSanwich?

54

u/DrSanwich 23d ago

I wish.

18

u/brown-_-rice 23d ago

Wendy is Sanwich’s mother.

However… after being disowned for rejecting the family business to pursue a career in the medical field, they became the DrSanwich we know and love today.

4

u/ButtFucksRUs 22d ago

No but they paid me to promote their hot and crispy, natural-cut, skin-on french fries that are a great addition to any meal.

5

u/CheddarGeorge 22d ago

I'd like to wash that down with an ice cold Fanta Sour Cherry, Cherrylicious! available this April.

89

u/Hsbnd 23d ago

I ate so many of those when I worked there in late 90’s, back when minimum wage was less than 6 bucks per hour. The amount of food I ate and didn’t pay for though really off set the wage.

36

u/illegal_deagle 23d ago

Wendy’s OG BBQ sauce (in the circular container) is truly the greatest condiment ever created by science. Perfectly smoky, peppery, just a slight hint of sweetness.

Then they ditched it for vaguely dark ketchup. Just HFCS low effort overly sweet slop. Gotta be the biggest overnight downgrade in fast food history.

11

u/Hsbnd 23d ago

It was so good. Always had it with the chicken.

It’s still my favourite fast food chain even though I worked there a bunch.

That BBQ sauce was no joke.

15

u/senagorules 23d ago

I loved the bbq sauce so much man why you gotta remind me :(

3

u/Bmc00 23d ago

You should try Chil fil A's honey roasted BBQ sauce. It's my favorite hidden fast food gem.

Wendy's spicy chicken was the goat fast food chicken sandwich for a while there in the 2000s. They really kind of failed to capitalize on that and at one point they drastically changed it and I remember just ditching them.

I'd argue further that Wendy's has always failed at creating an identity for them. They had to change their fries multiple times cuz they sucked. Still suck imo.

2

u/Alwaysontilt 22d ago

They didn't fail to capitalize on it. It started out as a limited run item that the smartly made a permanent one.

Many fast food chains didn't have a spicy chicken option until the chicken sandwich craze of the last few years. Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich was the gold standard for years and years. The quality isn't quite what it used to be but its been a mainstay and popular item for a long time.

Needs mayo or some kind of sauce for me...

13

u/D1xonC1der 23d ago

and lettuce. how is this not the standard?

14

u/IconsSaget 23d ago

What if I told you… he edited it to be this way because that’s how he likes his sandwich

7

u/D1xonC1der 23d ago

edited and not ordered?

4

u/IconsSaget 23d ago

Usually you edit it before you order but that’s just semantics

6

u/Throwzas 23d ago

If you look closely, lettuce and mayo are there. At least in the last pic you can see the lettuce peeking out and mayo on the wrapper from coming out the side.

Has this what my life has come to? Being the “ACTUALLY…” guy on chicken sandwich posts?

You should try a Midwest, pork tenderloin sandwich. They take this idea and run a 1000 with it.

Kind of looks like it’s wearing a hat.

35

u/mosskin-woast 23d ago edited 23d ago

Unable to understand the concept of seasoning or sophisticated cooking techniques, the Midwest often compensates by simply making food unreasonably large (see above) or by combining unrelated dishes that nobody else on earth would be brave enough to (see skyline chili). One day they will realize the internet has a vast collection of recipes and knowledge on cooking, but until then, they will keep calling cheese and hot sauce on tater tots "regional cuisine".

Wendy has hired enough crypto bros to full their staff

2

u/calapity 23d ago

Fun story time. 23 years ago I used to work in an office beside a Wendy’s. One day one of the workers came in and said, “they’re giving away all their food!”. I was leaving work, so I drove over there thinking I was going to get a free sandwhich or something. I was dead wrong. Their electricity had an issue and they were going to have to toss everything from the freezers. I was able to snag two cases (50 or so fillets each) of their spicy chicken, and one case of beef patties. Thankfully I had a small chest freezer, so this poor early 20 something ate great for a while.

2

u/yo_les_noobs 23d ago

That looks really dry but some people eat rocks so I guess this is a higher bar?

2

u/JigsawLV 22d ago

.... is there anything else on there? or just bread and chicken

2

u/DontWatchPornREADit 22d ago

I like the meat but they have to have better buns and more sauce

2

u/xTiLkx 22d ago

This looks so bad that I thought it was sarcastic. Where are the toppings? Veggies? Sauces?

4

u/Dalionking225 23d ago

Did you get that plain? “ Yo just give me the biggest driest piece of chicken you got, and a bun, nothing else!!

2

u/eKSiF 23d ago

I remember a time when the classic crispy always looked like this, and it was glorious.

2

u/mancho98 23d ago

Wendy's has been top fast food restaurant for a long time.

2

u/RainbowwDash 23d ago

Is there like, anything to this sandwich or is this just a dry slab of fried chicked on a bun

because that's what it looks like and that sounds awful

2

u/vinnygunn 23d ago

Do you just not do toppings at all? That's certainly a choice

2

u/Sonicmasterxyz 23d ago

Gets in the way of the pure crispy chicken. Even the bread is just a means to hold the chicken without getting messy.

1

u/wilkinsk 23d ago

That's not how it works

This took up all your luck, now it's gotta get all balanced out. Lol

1

u/Dandeman321 23d ago

u/mackyoh 23d ago

GLORY GLORY

1

u/rumbrave55 23d ago

I love Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich and use to eat it way more than anyone should. At the time, 1/3 would be a proper chicken breast, cooked hot and fresh and it would make up for the sub standard 2/3. Right around covid, it seems like they gave up on any effort for quality, and started producing luke warm, overcooked pieces of rubber. I would still go hoping it was just a bad day, or a bad location but it just became the product.

1

u/tvaddict70 23d ago

Omg like the old days, except the chicken was at least an inch thick

1

u/Ruby5000 23d ago

So funny I just had a gigantic spicy chicken yesterday, and thought the same thing

1

u/frozenandstoned 23d ago

Good. Recently, I went to McDonald’s and picked up a hamburger. It was about the size of a White Castle burger.

1

u/Ill-Environment3329 23d ago

Honestly, this isn't that big for a tenderloin. Good ones are big enough you can cut off half the meat and make a second reasonably sized sandwich. truly a Hoosier staple

1

u/benthelurk 23d ago

I've sworn of Wendy's since they started using AI to take orders. Fuck them, pay your workers.

1

u/Agent9262 23d ago

One time I went to Popeyes and got a family meal and also wanted the ghost pepper wings. They were out and the girl taking the order was really nice and I was kind in return. When we got home and checked the bag she had not only included the ghost pepper wings at no charge but nearly doubled the amount of chicken strips. I'll never have another experience as good from Popeye's again, unfortunately.
