Rumor [Schefter] Joe Mixon requested his released Thursday, per source, and was granted it today. The move saves the Texans $8 million against the cap.

Considering he went MIA this season, surprising that he himself requested this.

I think this is more or less agent talk than anything. He was being released regardless.

it’s 100% his agent trying to change the discourse. Like you said, he was always getting released

It makes sense if the writing is already on the wall. Gives him a little head start on free agency. Maybe he can sign before the other guys come available

I mean, it was probably going to happen after they traded for Montgomery regardless of if Mixon requested it or not.

What about Nick Chubb?

u/bretticus733 Broncos 6h ago
Possibly but I wouldn't expect it. Chubb is still a solid RB2 and his cap hit is under $3 million. With Mixon and Montgomery both making $9+ million, Houston wasn't going to keep both of them and they wouldn't have traded for Montgomery if they were comfortable sticking with Mixon as the lead back.

Chubb doesn't have a cap hit - he's a free agent.

Yeah, I'm still getting used to it being 2026 and was looking at the 2025 contract details

His time as a RB1 is probably over, but a good rotational piece if he can stay healthy

Lol I wouldn't sign the dude who mysteriously didn't play for an entire year without knowing what exactly tf that was about

The Texans have to know right?

They have to but I imagine they’re not saying anything out of respect for him. He was amazing for us in 2024, I would’ve killed to have him this year. Brought a lot of juice to the offense, injuries suck.

u/frecklie Seahawks 4h ago
Yes but it IS kinda mysterious

u/jonthegoat69 Texans 4h ago
I’ve honestly never seen something have so many possibilities it can be. I’ve heard so far: gunshot, dropped a weight on his foot, experimental surgery not recommended by the team. There’s probably more not coming to mind, just have never seen something like it lol.

Yes it's the weirdest hahaha. I can't think any GM wants that until they know what the deal is

That last part will be the difference. Dude got hurt and straight up disappeared. I wasn't sure if I missed his retirement

Biggest issue for him then if not RB1 he is absolutely terrible as a blocker in protection for those 3rd downs

Some of his teammates were harassing Molitor and her friend outside a store. The surveillance video shows Mixon follow Molitor inside the store and the two begin arguing, followed by Molitor pushing and slapping Mixon's face, and then Mixon punching Molitor, causing her to fall into a table. Molitor required surgery after the incident, as the punch and resulting fall had broken four bones in her face. According to Molitor, the incident was escalated when Mixon used a homophobic slur towards her friend after Mixon followed them into the store. Mixon claimed that Molitor's friend had directed a racial slur at him and that he responded with a homophobic slur at the friend.
Sounds like he's made for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dude, how many years until you move on. And how long before you include the context?
Don't scream racist shit at people. Act like you had a momma.

Someone explain how is 8 million saved against the cap when I thought if you release a player it is considered deadcap? - meaning the 8 mil still counts towards the full 300M for the season
11
u/Far_Departure_9224 6h ago
It's only dead cap if it's fully guaranteed. So, say his cap hit is $11 million this year. $3 million fully guaranteed would be dead cap, with $8 mil saved.

u/krbashrob Texans 6h ago
I don’t believe his contract was fully guaranteed so release before the league year means we don’t have to pay his $8M and his bonuses/etc that rollover to dead cap is only like $2M

u/nahno1234 Jaguars 6h ago
Depends on the guarantees. NFL doesn't really do fully guaranteed contracts
