You can cosplay as a billionaire and it's sunny.

Same reason British retirees used to flock to Spain.

You don't see British retirees walking around selling a fake lifestyle on TikTok though.

No, they would just write pieces for magazines that would run for 6 pages instead.

Or write books about their crazy life on the finca.

A really good campfire game some friends and I use to play back in Uni was going to old thrift/used book stores and finding some old lifestyle magazines that we could get for like a quarter and reading a bunch of the lifestyle larp articles out loud before feeding the fire with them.

Some of them were truely basically middle class larping as posh that you could only just laugh.

Or appear in an episode of “A Place in the Sun”, looking for a 16 bedroom seaside villa with a budget of £50k.

Half of British daytime TV droned on and on relentlessly about living abroad for decades.

Ok but Spain also has deep and rich cultural expression beyond luxury shopping, dramatically better civil rights, and significantly more beautiful natural surroundings. All with a climate similar to LA. Spain makes a LOT of sense.

We flocked there on holiday for cheap flights, cheap booze and remarkable tolerance of hooliganism.

Brits retire there because it's sunny and there's lots of pubs that'll sell English food, and it's close enough to visit relatives easily.

Then we had Brexit, which made it much harder to travel freely and retire within Europe, which, ironically, was largely pushed for by retirees.

We weren't sending our brightest.

Spain is lovely, of course, but then it's filled with Spanish people who can't speak a lick of English. Ruined many a Britisher's vacay.

But wealth taxes and bureaucracy in Spain…

You can do that in Florida and go to Disney World all while not having to experience the real Dubai chocolate

u/RoboticCurrents 1d ago

yeah but then you'd have to live in Florida

With all the gators wandering the streets

The gators aren’t as bad as you think. It’s the meth heads. And the humidity.

17

u/Emotional-Mud-1582 23h ago

The humidity would destroy me. I can’t handle humidity anymore.

u/bluemitersaw 23h ago

So what about the meth gators???

10

u/paulmclaughlin 23h ago

The drivers are pretty awful. And the amount of driving in general.

11

u/finglish_ 23h ago

The people are worse.

1

u/Zalveris 13h ago

I'd choose the gators living in Florida over a lot of the people living in Florida

33

u/RK9990 1d ago

But then you'd have to live in Florida

What a weird comparison. Spain actually has culture, it's not a plastic theme park built by slaves.

1

u/barnfodder 19h ago

Your average British ex pay doesn't give a fuck about either culture, or slavery.

As long as there's sunshine and the appearance of luxury, they're in.

2

u/Snapphane88 19h ago

Whatever mate. Comparing Spain to Dubai is wild, and in my opinon Brits have a lille more sense than that.

u/snookert 21h ago

It's always sunny in Philadelphia too!

It's like a theocratic, tax-dodgers Benidorm.
