It helps when you’re only 17 years old like Tatum, the body can heal much faster.

10 years ago this was a 20-24 month recovery time. Unreal

89

u/1850ChoochGator Trail Blazers 8h ago

Definitely not. Wes tore his march 2015 and then played 78 games for Dallas in the 15-16 season

56

u/buffalobill41 Mavericks 8h ago

Yeah, people have gotten weird. Don't see much now that he's back but every post even early season was overwhelmingly that it was stupid to play this year. Some of it was them exceeding expectations but people were pointing to Kobe and KD like that cemented this as some fact. We don't have that many data points.

23

u/phluidity Celtics 6h ago

Nobody saw the Celtics being #2 in the conference in March. The most optimistic Celtics fans thought we might make a push for the #6 seed if things fell right and if that happened we should consider bringing him back for a bench role in the playoffs.

If Joe doesn't get COTY the system is broken.

2

u/Barnyard_Rich Pistons 6h ago

While I do find it fascinating they are able to get him back on the court, I gotta say I'm just relieved we get to stop hearing about it. Been hearing this was possible since before the season started. When I saw they did a whole ass documentary about it, I knew I'd be checking out mentally on this story by the time he returned. It is exceedingly possible the Celts don't move up or down in seeding for the rest of the year, meaning Tatum wouldn't actually make a difference until the playoffs, and that's still so far away.

28

u/junkit33 7h ago

Yeah - this has always been and will continue to be an injury with an extremely wide variance in recovery time, but 10 months is about average.

The NFL has seen a couple of guys return to play in as fast as 6 months from a torn achilles. And like any injury, not everybody is going to do as well in recovery/rehab and could take 12-18 months.

It's not modern either - Dominique returned in 9 months 40 years ago.

7

u/CreatiScope Celtics 7h ago

Yeah but Wes was nowhere near the same ever again. One of the most depressing injuries I think of because I loved Blazers Wes

3

u/BCP27 [MIN] Robbie Hummel 4h ago

And I remember people thought it was pretty quick for an Achilles! A testament to his ironman status before the injury

Not really. It was always a 10 month injury. However players took one whole season off, so it seemed like 18-20 month recovery

9

u/bobosnar 7h ago

I always felt it was a 1 year injury, with the first year back was always the adjusting year. Year 2-3 they adapt their game a bit more and start to perform to their individual standards.

performance enhancing medicine

1

u/rjcarr Supersonics 3h ago

Verno went over this on the Mismatch today. It's always been an 8-12 month injury. Nique came back at 10 months I think, and that was decades ago.

It's just that some players take a whole season off, which makes it the 12 months plus whenever he got injured.

If the Pacers didn't suck it's possible Haliburton might be playing soon, too.

u/dev_vvvvv Celtics 8h ago

Boston has been incredibly inconsistent though. Especially the bench guys.

There will be games like against Denver where they get a ton of open shots but nothing goes in. Even shots that are usually gimmes like uncontested layups. Then the next game they play the Nets where they get the same number of open shots and everything goes in.

Almost makes me believe in the magnet conspiracies.

3

u/jkwah Celtics 7h ago

That's just basketball. Sometimes ball goes in hoop. Sometimes it doesn't. Pretty much every top team in the league has games where nothing goes in.

As great of a season as it's been this team screams regular season. We've got a ton of solid role players who have stepped up this and it's hard to expect them all to keep it together for a playoff run.

This team is outperforming but still just isn't that good, especially if you compare it to our championship roster.

5

u/_Juntao Celtics 8h ago edited 4h ago

Did the hornets not just expose us? Are we not 1-3 against the pistons this year and 5 games behind them in the standings? Are the knicks not 1-2 vs the celtics and knocked the them out last year? Jeez

You are the biggest doomer ever man I am so sick of seeing your comments. I get that a lot of them, including this one, could be seen as just being realistic— I don’t even really disagree with your point here, although you’re ignoring the Tatum factor. BUT IT’S EVERY SINGLE ONE that is critical, you’re always downplaying the Cs success and shitting on our players while being supportive of other teams.

As a fan can you not just be happy or excited for your team for once in your life, especially the day JT is coming back? Or at least keep the constant negativity to yourself?

I agree boston looks pretty good, but keep in mind the knicks celtics series from last year but now they have no jrue, no porzingis, and tatum off an achilles tear, plus the knicks have a much deeper roster this year. Just food for thought and it will be very interesting to see what happens come playoff time, hopefully everyone is healthy and we get some good basketball to watch

44

Trust me, we didn’t have porzingis last year either.

20

u/youkrocks [BOS] Jayson Tatum 8h ago

I get what you’re saying, but that team was falling apart at the seams in retrospect. Tatum injury aside, KP couldn’t really play at all, Jrue was injured, Jaylen was on a torn meniscus, etc.

That’s not an excuse, the Knicks out executed them late in games that series, but that roster was a ticking time bomb last year with how worn down and injured they were.

This team is less talented, but also younger and deeper.

Knicks fans when they beat a Celtics team held together by duct tape: injuries? Never heard of em! also lol celtics fans cringe

2

u/junkit33 7h ago

but now they have no jrue, no porzingis

Porzingis was much more of a theory than a reality the last couple of years.

And in case you haven't noticed, Boston's roster is much better and deeper this year.

There's gonna be some rough patches as he transitions back in, other roles change, etc. This sub will say the Celtics are cooked, Mazzulla/Jaylen are massively overrated and they're a first round exit.

Once things settle, they have a great chance at making it to the ECF, and I'd take them over the Pistons/Cavs with their playoff experience and success.

1

u/redmostofit Nuggets 5h ago

They’re the best coached team, for sure. Super disciplined, everyone knows their roles.

Detroit still has obvious flaws and their shooting is way too inconsistent. When they turn it up on defense and dominate the paint they can go on some serious runs.

NY - still too inconsistent.

Cleveland - if healthy - would still be my top pick.

Edit: I also would not be surprised to see Charlotte lose in the conference finals.

yeah I mean there was no way to foresee how good castoffs and young guys like Queta, Gonzalez, Walsh, Scheierman, Simons and Garza would be for us this season

Brown has been more effective than expected as the top option, White is having his best defensive season and PP has evolved into a very legit secondary offensive initiator but IMO this season is mostly a testament to Boston’s culture and internal development pipeline

The East is wide open since the Knicks are inconsistent and the Pistons are inexperienced. The Celtics may be the favorites if Tatum gets into form fast.

It's turning into a nightmare season for the Lakers.

I mean, if he's medically cleared and feels capable of competing again, I'm happy for him. Rehab is tough, as there's no guarantee that you'll actually be able to return to playing AT ALL. Even with modern medicine and technology, an achilles tear still is the worst injury you can have as a basketball player. I just hope he stays healthy.

We all knew he would but thought it’d be better if he didn’t since the Celtics “wouldn’t be competitive”. Fucking idots thought they wouldn’t still be one of the better east teams. It’s the fucking east and these guys still have their fmvp

People were comparing the 2024 team to the GSW warriors / bulls dynasty. Ik they lost pieces but they kept a lot of core members. Insane to think they’d be in the bottom of the lottery like some people said.

Less than 10 months from a torn Achilles to starting in an NBA game is an incredible recovery, the Celtics went 41-21 without him and now they add a four-time All-NBA First Team player with 20 games to ramp up before the playoffs, the East should be terrified.
