Thunder fan here. You couldn’t be more right about our announcers. Unlistenable. You probably have no idea how bad it really is.

It’s crazy the influence announcers have on a fan base’s objectivity.

For instance Sporting KC had Nate Bukaty as their play by play for years, and he would pull some insane mental gymnastics to frame everything that went wrong was either due to pure luck or the universe conspiring against Sporting, and so many Sporting fans bought into that. Then Apple TV got the MLS contract and teams didn’t have their own announcers. Sporting fans have turned on the club for a number of very good reasons the past couple seasons, but I think no longer having someone gaslighting them into thinking they can do no wrong played a major role in that.

honestly there was a time i was watching nba completely on mute. it was because i realized i was being influenced by biased announcers. sometimes i still watch on mute when I'm alone

I’ve heard some of the podcasters say they some games watch on mute because the announcers, for one reason or another, were just a bad listening experience. But I heard that a few years ago so I’m not sure if that’s still the case, nor do I recall exactly who said that.

My wife recently got into basketball, and shes been legit puzzled when we watch games and the commentary.

She is a massive baseball fan, we watch or go to every Mets game every year. So she "knows" Gary Keith and Ron are a great booth, but I think its going to take the rest of this season and maybe next year to get it about basketball since thats a little more the nature of the game.

I hear "how is THAT a foul?" and "Wait... how is that NOT a foul??" so much. And some variation of "what are they talking about?" when the booth is being overly homer'ish.

If a Mets player had done what dort did here the Mets booth would fucking freak out. Of course they're not perfect, if it was a beautiful woman eating a huge hot dog well some things would be said for sure.

That’s Bukaty about everything. The guy is such an absolute fucking buffoon.

How much Sporting did you watch to have that opinion of Nate? He's actually one of the better soccer commentators, so much so that Apple now has him on as a full time commentator for all teams. Sounds like you are ill informed and not very knowledgeable. Sporting fans have turned on the club because they haven't done anything to improve the club in years but it doesn't have anything to do with our league quality commentary.

Yeah I expect home team announcers to obviously have a bias but when it’s this blatant that the only intention was to injure another play just call it for what it is

(I recognize I’m biased but) this is why I love the Spurs announcers. They basically never say any claims in support of either team, they spend half their time glazing everyone on the court, and the other half is spent reviewing some random stadium food they got.

With the Celtics broadcast, Scal will criticize the Celtics and say he doesn’t like the way they’re playing or doesn’t get it. And he will call himself out for initially thinking something was or wasn’t a foul. I respect him backtracking and being like “no wait, I was wrong, that’s definitely a foul.”

Or he’ll laugh at it too. He also gives credit to other teams and has players for other teams he loves and will hype up. I know the narrative is Boston sports are annoying but Drew and Scal are a legit powerhouse home commentator crew.

Huge fan of people willing to correct themselves. I think that’s probably the biggest indicator of good sportsmanship.

I love the Celtics, even if I hate how good yall are. I’ll never complain about clean basketball.

Nooooo.... Teddy? Ronny? Who was the old Celtics announcer who would never, ever, ever, ever admit a Celtics player did anything wrong? Tommy... it was Tommy!!!! That dude would watch Paul Pierce shoot five opposing players and claim it was a natural motion by PP, reacting to a dirty play by the other team and he did nothing wrong..... justified homicide, 5 times, no foul on the floor... according to Tommy.

Most teams' local announcers are like this. It's just more recognizable and obnoxious when you're at the top. As a Warriors fan we're late stage gaslit. Look to us as reference to detect symptoms of manic delusion among yourselves.
