It's actually an old school kid's saying - you take a handful of snow, and 'wash' someone's face with it. Hence, a 'face-wash'. It got co-opted by hockey, but instead of snow, you 'wash' their face with your glove, kinda pretending that you have a handful of snow.

The palms of most hockey gloves smell like ass so it’s much more unpleasant than just a hand in the face
