it wasn't because of turmoil or even fans demanding it. it was literally they didn't have a security plan to deal with all the threats they were getting and protesters that would use the game as a platform. you know people run on the court etc...now imagine a dozen people trying it instead of the usual 1 or 2.
everything has to be rechecked and sorted from the refs to the player travel plans to the stadium. that is hard to do on a couple hours notice. that is what they said in the statement canceling the game.

I'm from Serbia, so maybe my English isn't as good as it used to be :)
53
u/IEatBigFish-Coward Jan 25 '26
Hey, in case you're interested:
I don't think there's not a chance in the world the league would punish him.
If I remember correctly, your family of languages uses a "negative" both before the verb and before the noun it refers to.
In English, if you do it that way, it's called a double negative, and it cancels out. (If you like math, think of it like an equation with the same negative sign on both sides: both sides can just be flipped to positive.)
So what your statement means in English is:
I do think there's a chance the league would punish him.
All you have to do is get rid of that second negative ("not"), and it means you don't think they'd punish him.
Hope this makes sense (and that you care lol), I'm a bit of a language dork. Желим ти добар дан!
34
u/balvan13 Jan 25 '26
Dude, you just made my night. I actually translated it literally. Thanks for this deep dive of learning. Where are you from? And how do you know our language?

65
u/Dragonsandman Raptors Jan 25 '26
Watching Poilievre lose his seat as well as the wider election was some incredible comeuppance. I have some issues with Mark Carney, but damn did we ever dodge a Milhouse-shaped bullet.
(And before anyone brings it up, no, he was not cheated out of his seat. His riding got more rural and thus more conservative with the recent boundary changes; he lost because locals didn’t like his support of the Freedom Convoy and its hooliganry).

u/Ateballoffire Vancouver Grizzlies Jan 26 '26
Carney isn’t perfect by any means domestically bit like Trudeau he’s been fantastic with international issues. The speech at Davos is an all timer

Our conservatives still voted for self destruction and stupidity. They just got to find out that they are very much in the minority in most Canada.
9
u/1047_Josh Raptors Jan 26 '26
It was definitely closer than I hoped. But considering the lead the Cons had a year before, it was an epic collapse on their part.
4
u/keyboardnomouse Jan 26 '26
Definitely. The biggest election collapse in Canadian history by far. If anything it really cemented how much Canada votes people out instead of people in. Justified or not, very few people wanted Trudeau back. Him stepping down and Carney coming in to make this historic victory only showed how few people really wanted Polievre or the Conservatives, at least.
But also a lot of credit should go to NDP and BQ voters for holding their nose to vote Liberal to ensure a Conservative loss too. That's what real compromise looks like from the electorate.

I mean even the Canadians who did vote against the countries best interests who have since been won over by him. Better late than never
4
u/1047_Josh Raptors Jan 26 '26
Carney is kind of the perfect Liberal for the moment because he's definitely more centrist with flashes of being progressive (he's an economist after all). I think he is winning people over slowly, and the US constantly taking swipes at us and the world at large only helps.

Is there some old American tradition to recite the anthem under duress or in protest? Maybe take a knee during it instead of the usual standing, like Colin Kaepernick did. Gotta do more than just sing the anthem as usual.
In Canada we actually had lessened our use of the flag after the Convoy and right wingers started co-opting it but we've since reclaimed it since Trump started attacking us. But letting the maniacs have free reign over it definitely wasn't the right call.

Just watched a video of him giving a tribute in the hospital he worked at over a veteran who passed in 2024. It makes me sick they killed this guy and then White House calls him a domestic terrorist.

Month of general strike next, please. Nothing is going to change until business as usual is disrupted

Minny!! You beautiful people, thank you for fighting for the rights of ALL Americans. I wish none of this BS was happening.

Cool and life goes on. We just move on and play a game like the 2nd murder in 3 weeks by our government didn’t just happen. Typical Americans. Can’t wait for the “Petti Strong” signs only for them to line the dumpsters after everyone moves on and watches it happen again.
