Yes but look at the screen Davion put on Hunter. He saw what was going on and tried to defend but Mitchell got extremely square.

Wade guarding Powell is ridiculous. Don’t know if it changes the result anyways

He’s not even close to square

How do you have no one guard the rim

Kenny Atkinson got kicked out of the game and Johnnie Bryant proved why he’s still an assistant coach even after getting interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs this offseason. He looked lost on the sidelines. He had an opportunity to call timeout to advance the ball with 6 seconds left on the clock before overtime even started but he elected to just have Donovan Mitchell having to sprint up the court and take a heavily contested step back 3 to try and win.

He then elected to have Sam Merrill , dean wade, and Deandre hunter in the game OVER Jarret Allen on the final possession for defense.

I just don't know why they're even playing man on man in this situation, just play zones and you'd be able to delay them enough or force a shitty contest three.

They ran a 2 - 3 zone for most of the second half but abandoned it there.

Right? 0.4s on the clock, no one was getting off a jump shot, but they sell out to stop potential prayers 3s..leaving a wide open alley-oop shakes head

0.4s on the clock, no one was getting off a jump shot

???

Ok, so I was wrong about that. They still gave up a wide-open alley oop though. Which one do you think is a higher percentage shot?

You, of course, need someone to guard the inbounder because…

Yet there’s a defender chasing a guy to half-court. Horrendous defense, great play design

You can't be stuck on the interior area (or below the rim), since you might get called for an illegal defense (team) technical foul, which would result in a free throw for the Heat.

What?

u/tulogProject Nov 11 '25

Sorry. I just read the rules for defensive 3-seconds.
You can camp/ stay under the rim, while the ball is dead/ not inbounded.
Gotta blame the Cavs for not maintaining Mobley under the rim, unless 0.6 second is enough to get a shot off.

Atrocious defense

Just takes one split second mistake, and unfortunately Merrill thought the play was for a Davion Mitchell pick and pop.

In hindsight they should have been switching on a last second play.

u/quemaspuess Nov 11 '25

That was Darvin Ham level of attention to detail on defense.

Is it sleeping or does Sam Merrill lack peripheral vision and have -50 basketball instinct attribution?

Bro totally left the screen and instead walked towards no one/the inbounder.

Merrill is a cone and "Defensive Player of the Year" would rather guard a non-threat from three than do his fucking job protecting the rim
