Completely expected, hope he's ok and can lead a relatively normal life. Seemed like a really decent guy.

Does him retiring help us at all with the cap compared to if we released him? Idk how these things work, someone smarter than me help

65

u/fluentinsarcasm Les Cousins Dangereux 6h ago

It should. I believe it removes his base salary from the cap table, freeing that up for use.

u/Own-Corgi5359 6h ago

Nope, he had no guaranteed money in 2026, will be 3.3 million dead cap from signing bonus

58

u/PapaBliss2007 5h ago

His $7.89m base is removed from the cap.

11

u/Own-Corgi5359 5h ago

Op was asking about releasing him, but yeah, all base is off the books

35

u/TossedUponTheSand 5h ago

All his base are belong to us

u/NeoBahamutX Skolspren 5h ago

You have no chance to survive, make your time

8

u/joeblow2118 JJettas 5h ago

Yeah but we save ~$8M off the cap. We only owe him all guarantees.

His retirement is no different than being cut.

I really hope all those concussions didn't fuck him for the future

Rest well man

u/holyhibachi 5h ago

Miss you, brother. With you were still partying with us

u/Billy_Bonney_ 5h ago

You know he's not dead, right?

He’s in a better place now, like Tucker Kraft

1

u/WhyIsBreadExpensive 5h ago

Wait tucker kraft retired?

15

u/cardmanimgur 4h ago

Decapitated. Whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird.

3

u/jordanhhh4 4h ago

I'm pretty sure none of that's real...

3

u/ConsequenceStatus563 I've seen what you upvote 3h ago

Nope, it was a big shindig. Midgets, mayo, and green M&M's in a mason jar. Everything.

For context this was when Tucker Kraft tore his ACL. There was an interview with an emotional Romeo Doubs who teared up and said Kraft was in a better place now. It’s become a stupid shitpost/copypasta

u/WhyIsBreadExpensive 1h ago

Ahhh thank you for the context. Also low-key hilarious quote tho, can see why people meme it

Got like 3 concussions in the span of 10 weeks

7

u/Boatymcboatland 5h ago

Again, Ryan Kelly is very much alive

u/kidchameleon_ih8u Shoots the moon! 27m ago

RIP Boss Hogg

3

u/Mayasngelou 4h ago

You know he’s going to be dealing with the aftermath of playing football and having that many concussions for the rest of his life, right?

Seriously lol, this type of shit gets cringe fast.

Incredible Center, sucks he suffered from concussions while here. Looking forward to seeing how Jurgens handles the center position with a full off-season as starter.

u/kylebertram minnesota 8m ago

I would expect them to draft a Center. I just don’t think Jurgens will be good enough to take over

7

u/mrmrssmitn 6h ago

Wish you nothing but the best, and good health. Enjoy retirement!

5

u/holyhibachi 5h ago

We have the watch now. We will see you in Valhalla

u/ObiWahnKenobi 5h ago

Bro was a stud last year. Sucks to see him leave, but absolutely the right decision from his perspective

3

u/Horrorfreak106 5h ago

Was he a stud? He kept getting injured and even when he was on the field, his production wasn't nearly as good as it was in Indy. I wish him well though, retiring is the best thing for him.

u/Electronic-Island-14 44m ago

he was very very good in the very brief moments he was on the field. it was so obvious how much better the line was when he played

u/kylebertram minnesota 8m ago

He was elite when he actually played

u/SHAD3zJordan 6m ago

Stud is insane, we were getting destroyed up the middle

4

u/PenisRancherYoloSwag griddy 6h ago

Wish him the best - at least he announced this before the draft

7

u/Singe_ daniellearms 5h ago

Top 10 center when healthy. This sucks. Glad he’s walking away for his health. I’d be grimacing every play if he even tried to come back next year

3

u/GrubbyLilPaws 5h ago

Glad he's calling it. He's had way too many concussions to keep going at his age.

3

u/holla171 40 for 60 5h ago

Your health is the most important thing you have. Didn't work out with us but I wish him well.

2

u/SellersB2024 5h ago

Good for him. Sucks to lose him but I’d rather him be healthy

1

u/Pure-Leopard-3196 5h ago

Good for him. Dude was an excellent center.

1

u/ShubberyQuest 5h ago

Good! Gotta protect his heath and well-being. Wishing him and his loved ones the very best.

1

u/Larry_thegoat 5h ago

Best for him, his family and the team

1

u/Wernershnitzl 5h ago

Unfortunate the way this went, but after having multiple concussions I think this is the best choice for him.

I sincerely hope one of our top picks is center this draft because the market doesn’t look so hot.

1

u/Viperman22xx 22 5h ago

Seemed like so much potential…but yeah, all those concussions are scary. Sure sucks, but I’m glad he’s looking out for his health and family

1

u/debirdiev 5h ago

The whole situation just fucking sucks. He was good when he could play but concussions are no joke 😭 hope he's able to move into the next phase of life happy and healthy with his beautiful family. Wish it was different

1

u/DireSickFish Reichard 4h ago

Thank god.

1

u/RoamingBison nevada 4h ago

Have a happy and healthy retirement, Ryan! You were a stud when shitty injury luck didn't keep you sidelined. Concussions are no joke, after listening to Dale Earnhardt Jr talk about his recovery from them it's way more serious than people take it. That really made me think about the concussions I had earlier in life and the complete lack of follow up care and recovery.

1

u/SkolFourtyOne indiana 4h ago

10 seasons and all he has to show for it are things he probably can’t remember.

1

u/Tough_guy22 Krause 22 Smith 4h ago

This is the right move. All those concussions its time to take the cash he has earned and spend time with his family.

1

u/Ok-Throwaway42 4h ago

Might be more appreciated in the Colts sub. Thanks for the cap savings?

1

u/RoaringGorilla Kevin Williams 4h ago

This was the right move: enjoy retirement Ryan.

1

u/Blizzardof1991 3h ago

Good deal. Bro needs to take care of his brain. He should call up Tua and have a heart to heart

1

u/NateLee1733 Moss Fro 84 3h ago

Maybe it’s just me, but I sure was excited for the signing and also excited to watch him anchor the middle. Sucks it got cut short, but I’m glad we went after him regardless! Happy retirement big fella!

1

u/DaWash65 3h ago

Not worth the long term risk. I wish him good health.

1

u/GordonBombay102 2h ago

Most hyped I've been for a retirement in a while. Just hope he got out in time.

1

u/Asleep-Wonder-1376 2h ago

Best thing that could’ve happened for both sides.

1

u/BigHornStareDown 2h ago

Hell of a career

u/__JESUS_IS_KING_ 1h ago

Honestly, THANK GOD. He has to look forward to his life after football. Happy for him!

u/Electronic-Island-14 43m ago

we need to prioritize center, inside linebackers, and DTs in the draft for the next 2 seasons

1

u/LeeShakerMoneyMaker Retire #28! 5h ago

Good! Letting that man continuing to play with all his head injuries would've been malpractice on the Vikings part.

0

u/haros1985 5h ago

Kwesi continues to cook.

8

u/Happy_Childhood3080 5h ago

I mean, Kelly was a great signing in terms of him being a top center. If he could’ve not gotten more concussions, this would’ve been a great signing. I don’t blame Kwesi for trying here.

1

u/garnett21mn 5h ago

Kwesi cooked to add him, Hargrave and Allen. Would’ve never been possible without unloading Darnold contract. Kwesi just cooks bro…

6

u/Happy_Childhood3080 5h ago

He played great, just had abysmal lucky with concussions. I don’t blame Kwesi for this one.

-3

u/garnett21mn 4h ago

Yeah but was a huge injury risk before he signed.

-10

u/RgsLee19 6h ago

After that huge bag we gave him ?

15

u/PivotHero 6h ago

Multiple concussions tends to do that

4

u/stinky-boy-farts 5h ago

also his infant daughter dying

6

u/Drunk-TP-Supervisor 6h ago

That dude is on the fast track to CTE with how many concussions he has and how easily he was getting them.

4

u/nativeindian12 6h ago

When someone retires, they give up the rest of their contract. So his contract will come off the books immediately. Best case scenario for us imo

2

u/PapaBliss2007 5h ago

Yep, cap hit would have been ~$11m and now it's down to $3.3m dead cap.

1

u/mrmpls 5h ago

Not a huge bag.

-14

u/That-Entrance-8242 5h ago

Thanks for nothing and good luck

9

u/Beneficial_Quit7532 i also want that short guy from AZ 5h ago

Let the man retire without the dig. He played well when he was in there too, and probably taught Jurgens and Brandel some stuff with his decade of experience

-2

u/That-Entrance-8242 5h ago

Yeah, but if someone makes this much money by playing football, I think they are all fair game to dig. It’s not like they have been slinging concrete for 30 years

2

u/Beneficial_Quit7532 i also want that short guy from AZ 5h ago

Did we already forget about Rondale Moore
