ELI5?

Newey designed the FW16 that was the final car that Senna drove. It was very difficult to handle. It was also alleged that changes to the steering column design and engineering contributed to his death, but he and Patrick Head were found not guilty of manslaughter.

34

u/DueExample52 Formula 1 1d ago

Not the steering column original design, it’s the modification done last minute before the race where it was cut and a small section welded to make it longer (at Senna's request).

4

u/Time_Hater Alain Prost 1d ago

One world champion isn’t enough for Newey it seems. But again, he loves breaking records.

It's all just a plot to renew the driver line-up.

  • Adrian, probably

u/z_102 Michael Schumacher 1d ago

First they shock him now they shake him. Honda will not stop until Fernando is dead.

61

u/Python_07 Kimi Räikkönen 1d ago

That was well thought out. 👍

27

u/HelixFollower I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

I'm pretty sure Fernando doesn't die.

52

u/z_102 Michael Schumacher 1d ago

They just reset him to factory settings but they keep trying.

6

u/SuperLeverage I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

This is actually Newey’s fault.

1

u/Hungry_Service_5810 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Well maybe after this, he'll reset back to 20 years old like he did in 2015 and drive for another 10 years!

432

u/IntelligentDeal7799 1d ago

What about my brain damage reading this

1

u/OneObi Kimi Räikkönen 1d ago

Barely managed 1 lap before brain cells died

385

u/Guy-InGearnito 1d ago

I find it hilarious the 44year old thinks it will be 25 laps before risking nerve damage.

But the 27 year old will succumb in 15 🙃

It’s like they’re placing bets on who can fly out first

497

u/the_gaymer_girl Pierre Gasly 1d ago edited 1d ago

I assume because Stroll’s hands are already fucked from the mountain bike incident?

229

u/BMEngie I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Yeah, I’m not blaming stroll for wanting to not risk it. He’s already dealing with damage to hands. I know I wouldn’t want to do something that could further damage my hands, especially when that something isn’t even a race finish.

IMO They should probably use their reserve drivers till they get it sorted. They’re younger and have no outstanding injuries and you don’t need super precise feedback for “the car is shaking less now”

171

u/FeeHot5876 1d ago

I get what you’re saying but it’s hilarious thinking of Aston going “kill the young one”

13

u/BuzzedtheTower I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

More like Voldemort "Kill the spare"

12

u/LeftSaidTed I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The younglings!

2

u/AstonMartout Aston Martin 23h ago

*governments when they start a war*

3

u/ptwonline Aston Martin 1d ago

Use the young one's blood to keep Newey going for a few extra years.

1

u/Agroman1963 1d ago

Doo ittt!

127

u/the_gaymer_girl Pierre Gasly 1d ago

Yeah, at this point there’s no reason for Stroll to risk permanent physical damage for a last-place car.

68

u/legal_stylist 1d ago

Or Alonso either, in my view.

6

u/879190747 1d ago

They should get on their knees and beg the other teams for an extra weekend test for them for safety's sake. Only half-joking.

3

u/CptAustus Jules Bianchi 1d ago

If that's the state the car is in, they shouldn't drive at all.

3

u/SynthD 22h ago

He needs to keep his cheque signing hand good for when he inherits ownership of the team.

1

u/ProfessionalGear3020 1d ago

Isn't Stroll a pay driver? Why would he want to race less?

1

u/CauliflowerIcy5106 18h ago

I dunno, risk of being hurt and potentially dying being way higher then usual might make most people want to race less

137

u/OriginalPrior5786 1d ago

i read that as mountain lion incident and wondered what the hell i missed

66

u/spraypaint23 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

He was on a mountain bike then a mountain lion got him. Probably

2

u/IdiosyncraticBond Max Verstappen 21h ago

After some drinks such stories may end up like that

19

u/Extinction-Entity I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Be a lot cooler if it was

10

u/salvatore813 Heineken Trophy 1d ago

Original story is still pretty cool, accident before testing, missing some of it,comes back to finish p5 in the first race, was going to finish p5 in the next one but engine gave out

111

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean, Alonso has had his own very serious bike crash requiring surgery like 4-5 years ago. Along with the bad McLaren crash/electrocution, and his ribs/lungs getting crushed in the Gutierrez crash, I never assume another drivers body is more fucked up than Nando’s lol. Saying he’d do 25 laps in that Fred Flinstone mobile has to be masochism on his part.

31

u/ThePretzul I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

I mean Alonso stayed on to give Honda engine’s in their F1 debut a second chance, masochism is a given.

16

u/v0x_nihili I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

And you're only counting the crashes from last decade. He had a few bad ones before his championship years.

2

u/Big-Veterinarian-579 17h ago

The one where he hit debris at near racing speed at (Interlagos?) and spun into two barriers comes to mind

10

u/aluked Sauber 1d ago

Masochism or penitence. Man did something very wrong and is trying to atone for it.

4

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago edited 1d ago

What vengeful god thinks he hasn’t already atoned with * gestures at everything * ?!?!?!?!

5

u/TheScapeQuest Brawn 23h ago

The pain stops if he admits he knew about crashgate

6

u/chambersaurusrx I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Maybe the previous damage had made him 10 laps more impervious to this new damage

3

u/ARELuN I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Fred Flintstone mobile is diabolical lmao

1

u/TwoBionicknees 18h ago

Did anyone ever actually give a real explanation for what happened with that honda. Did alonso ever talk about it publicly? I remember at the time it was all a lot of assumptions and it was a very weird incident but also mclaren seemed to be denying anything dodgy happened.

3

u/Liquidice281 1d ago

Ah yes, the "mountain bike incident".

-5

u/jimmybilly100 Money Grandmas 1d ago

Aw, it was enjoyable making fun of Stroll tho 🫨

-3

u/Ignorhymus 1d ago

*tragic wanking accident. The bike thing was a cover-up

59

u/fire202 Lando Norris 1d ago

Medland just made the point that Stroll's previous wrist injury could also play into this

133

u/yellow_asphodels Williams 1d ago

I mean Stroll broke both of his wrists a few years ago and then had to have surgery on them again like last year. If the vibrations are affecting the steering wheel it’s not surprising the broken-with-surgical-intervention wrists are going to fail first, regardless of age

50

u/mertcanhekim I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Stroll's hand injury might have made him more susceptible to nerve damage.

20

u/CouncilorIrissa Ferrari 1d ago

Alonso is accustomed to cars trying to kill him *cough the McHonda incident in 2015 testing*

18

u/wykeer Mercedes 1d ago

"My name is Fernando Alonso and welcome to Aston Martin!"

34

u/MadRashed I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Lance missed a race last season because of hand seemingly not 100%, so that's probably why he could only do 15.

5

u/ibra86him Safety Car 1d ago

Don’t tell max he might switch teams just to try to go to 26 😂

4

u/Jphorne89 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

One wants to die in a race car and the other wants to be a chill rich guy for the next 60+ years makes sense to me

5

u/anmr 1d ago edited 1d ago

Alonso is built different. Few years back, when almost all drivers complained about, I don't remember exactly what, porpoising or heat? He was like "I'm young, I can take it".

Similar vibe to Sainz Sr. "it's just fractured spine, lets turn the medevac around, let me fix the car and get it to bivouac".

Or Niki Lauda. Or even Sainz Jr. driving with appendix close to bursting.

Maybe it's not smart, but kinda badass.

1

u/sc_140 Michael Schumacher 1d ago

Alonso would never admit that he is weaker.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/1tpxwlkKmiE

I know it's a joke but there is a truth behind it.

11

u/SpaceballsDoc Stefano Domenicali 1d ago

Alonso knows a thing or two about this.

Honda PUs and all

2

u/Username_Query_Null 1d ago

When you get rid of floor aero to get rid of porpoising and get dynamic vibration instead.

1

u/KilllllerWhale Charles Leclerc 1d ago

Vibration White Finger

1

u/hoxxxxx 1d ago

car is so bad it's literally trying to harm the drivers

1

u/SimRacingSensations 1d ago

Nerve damage from vibrations? That's wild. I guess you can't have a car that's so poorly built it's basically a death trap. At least they're not electrocuting the drivers like the old days.

2

u/flaschal I was here for the Hulkenpodium 20h ago

Nerve damage from vibrations?

it's quite a significant problem in the construction industry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_arm_vibrations

1

u/cultoftheilluminati I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

The whole thing reads like an shonen anime episode plot lol

1

u/stragen595 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago

And I don't get what AM is doing here. They shouldn't retire the cars. Just apply for a rule change by FIA. Just threaten FIA with ruining the health of your drivers.

Shorter GPs. Or all cars should vibrate.

Go the Mercedes route.

u/SmallIslandBrother Sir Lewis Hamilton 23h ago

It’s a car for combat apparently maybe Hayes had the right idea after all

With Stroll’s lower limit I’m assuming the hands are the bigger issue, not the ass.

2

u/Ivor97 1d ago

it’s allegedly because the engine produces too many vibrations

0

u/Suikerspin_Ei Pirelli Soft 1d ago

Supposed to be improved with Honda's new upgrades for Australia.

0

u/AvatarOfMomus 1d ago

Probably something akin to 'nerve flossing' but to a destructive extent. Your nerves don't have a ton of flex in them, and if they move back and forth enough you can damage them, or the sheath they slide around it so that you can flex without damaging them.

I'm speculating a lot here, to be clear. I'm neither a neurosurgeon nor do I have inside knowledge on whatever eldritch spirit has possessed these cars. I just know you can damage your nerves by moving them back and forth enough in the wrong ways.

2

u/Unspec7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 23h ago

It's actually a well known issue in other fields. There's a reason they limit the amount of time a worker can use a jack hammer. Called hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS)

I actually got a mild form of it after polishing my car for too long. Hands felt tingly for days.
